Description

Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday apartment in Old Town - The Karoline

3 Bedrooms, 2 Bathrooms, Sleeps 8

This newly renovated, fully-equipped 3-bed and 2-bath apartment on the 1st floor(2nd floor US) of a historical neo-gothic building just around the corner from the Charles Bridge is for up to 8 guests, and at the same time caters to a smaller, more demanding group or family that wants to have Old World style but in a modern, functioning flat. There are three connecting rooms: the master bedroom with king-size bed(160 cm wide), the living room/sitting room with fireplace(bio-ethynol means real flames but no smoke), cable TV, and a large pull-out sofa(double-bed size), and then the large bedroom with two double-beds. These rooms all have their own entry/exit doors, so privacy is not a problem. The master bathroom has a tub and shower, his and her vanity sinks, and a washer and dryer concealed behind a decorative side panel. The second smaller bath has a shower, and both have heated floors. Complementary Wifi works throughout the flat. The fully-equipped kitchen is perfect for making large meals, or just for a coffee and small breakfast in the morning. Iron and ironing board, all towels and washcloths, and extra bedding are of course provided. Smoking is not permitted in the flat, but we have a small balcony which is perfect for that.

We think that you will appreciate the level of detail that Mark & Mirka put into the flat, from the choice of linens for the beds and selection of furnishings (we have two art nouveau chairs in the kitchen) to the extensive restoration of the ceiling décor and the matching chandeliers.

About Mark Grein

Mark Grein is originally from the U.S., but on a chance trip to Europe back in the nineties, he was enchanted by the magical allure of Prague and decided to set up shop here, right in the middle of central Europe not long after the Velvet Revolution. He and his wife Mirka are filmmakers, but decided to try their hand at renovation when they bought this beauty in the heart of the Old Town last year. They did much of the renovation work themselves, especially in restoring the original ceiling stucco decoration, spending many hours up on a ladder covered in wet plaster and paint.

Mark Grein purchased this apartment in 2013

Why Mark Grein chose Prague 1

We knew we had something special when we first set eyes on this diamond-in-the-rough. All of the doors in this residential building have wooden entrance doors or portals that are decorative pieces unto themselves. One inside the flat, we saw that the elaborate but faded ceiling decorations were just screaming to be restored, and the original owner had left many of the original details in this old place, such as doors, door handles, parquet floors, windows(including original glass in some of the windows-- look closely and you'll see the tell-tale 'waviness' in some of the panes). The layout was perfect--- three connected rooms, but all with their own entrances/exits, a large and separate kitchen, along with a small balcony. Located on the 1st floor of a neo-gothic buliding just around the corner from the famous Charles Bridge in the heart of the Old Town, but on a side pedestrian street, it just felt like the right place. We think you'll agree :)

What makes this apartment unique

As with all properties, 'genus loci' is the most important thing, and this flat has got it in large amounts. It is the perfect place to begin and end a walking tour of the beautiful city, and the quaint street has got great cafes, fantastic wine bars and restarants, and even though it's close to the famous bridge, it's managed to hang to a lot of its local character.

What a great experience from start to finish

Super nice apartment and perfectly located. It was so nicely designed for both beauty and utility. Very close to all the action but tucked away so not loud at all at night. We felt safe too inside and out. Owner arranged for a pick up at the train station and our return at the end of the stay. Someone met us at the apartment and went over all the details. Apartment is perfectly suited for two couples or a close knit family of 4-5. We were a party of 5 (2 kids, 2 adults and 1 grandmother) and it worked fine. They even had a bunch of snacks, drinks, pastries, etc at the apartment when we arrived, which we greatly appreciated. And, the apartment has a stand-alone dryer, which is rare and really helped in the laundry department. Heated floors too. Just too many nice things to name. Don't hesitate!

AMAZING

  • 5 of 5

Mark's flat was the most beautiful place I've ever stayed in my entire life. Our group of four was beyond thrilled with it, and it was even more beautiful than in pictures. It was an easy walk to so many popular spots in Prague, and the other areas were easily accessible by the very close tram stop. Four adults stayed in the apartment and we had more than enough room, and could have easily fit more people. It was clean, beautiful, and had everything we needed for our stay. Mark and Klara were excellent hosts and provided wonderful information before and after our arrival. I cannot recommend staying here enough! Thank you for making our trip to Prague so fantastic, Mark!

excellent

I stayed in Mark's flat for four nights with my elderly mother and my sister and brother. The flat was clean and as nicely presented as in the photographs. Although we did not get to meet Mark, he provided us with some welcome provisions on our arrival and we got a tour of the premises from his colleague as well as answers to all our questions. The beds were really comfortable and the flat was really nice to chill in together when we were not out. The location could not have been better - a few minutes walk to most of the sites. And you must try the vegetarian restaurant across the road - even meat eaters could not fault it! Mark arranged our pick up and drop off from and to the airport which saved a lot of hassle and best of all - he provided us with a dvd player so my mum could watch some of her films when she was tired. Everything was fabulous and you really should give this flat a try. Thanks Mark - just sorry we didn't get to meet you.

A wonderful apartment in every way!

  • 5 of 5

We were so lucky to find this apartment in Prague. It is comfortable, lovely, charming, and spacious.(It even has heated tile floors in both of the bathrooms!) It's in a quiet neighborhood on a cobblestone side street, and a short walk to the river, the Old Town Square and many restaurants, coffee shops etc. Mark (the owner) pre-arranged a driver to pick us up at the airport when we arrived and drive us back to the airport at the end of our stay. We paid for it, but the convenience of having it all set up was a wonderful perk. Mark met us at the apartment when we arrived, showed us around and answered all of our questions. He has a shelf of tour guide books, maps etc. as well as instruction booklets for the appliances (such as the washer and dryer) in the apartment. It really enhanced our time in Prague to have such an attractive and comfortable home-base, and such a friendly host. We couldn't have asked for more!

Beautiful flat in Prague....just steps to the Charles Bridge

  • 5 of 5

This was our second trip to Prague, so we knew the location we wanted. The Karoline was ideal. Very easy to walk to all the best locations, with excellent restaurants (Stoleti and Red Pif) within one block. The flat is beautiful, comfortable, clean and well stocked. Mark was very responsive and helped to arrange our airport transfers. His assistant met us on arrival and gave us a thorough orientation to the flat and the city. We have a second home that we rent through VRBO and are thus very critical when it comes to rental properties. We would recommend the Karoline without reservation. Thanks for everything!

very convenient location and beautiful property

  • 5 of 5

The interior of the apartment is beautiful with exceptionally good finishing touches. It is very comfortable and homely and everywhere in Prague is within walking distance. It is spotlessly clean, tidy and very well equipped. There were thoughtful touches when we arrived, essentials like bread, milk, cheese and ham so we could have breakfast the next day without having to find a shop. Even a bottle of wine. There are countless good quality eating establishments nearby. Our favourite was the Italian boat restaurant at the next bridge along from Charles Bridge, but we also found a lovely pavement restaurant nearby that we used the most. Off the beaten track is sometimes better than the main squares.

The weather was very hot during our stay which meant that we needed to have the windows open at night. There are many bars and clubs in Karoliny Svetle and because of this there was a continual stream of noisy people going past the flat right until the early hours of the next day. We were so tired from sightseeing that on most nights this did not keep us awake, but sometimes it did. If the windows were shut you could hear nothing. I only mention this as I have been asked to be honest and I am usually the first to be disturbed by extraneous noise. Yes, it was disturbing but it would not put me off returning or recommending the apartment.

We were also grateful to Mark for arranging very efficient airport transfers for us.

All four of us agree that this was the best holiday experience we have had. The total package; a comfortable apartment and the beauty of Prague. Mark should be very proud of the hard work he has lavished on the renovation of the apartment.

Owner's Response: Hi Vicki, and thanks for your honest review. We're so glad to hear that the trip went so well overall, but not happy to hear that you were disturbed a few times at night by some nightcrawlers. In the worst case, you can always close the windows and use the fans to stay cool.. Our cute pedestrian street is usually very peaceful, especially because there is little to no car traffic, but it only takes someone who's had a bit to drink to disturb the whole neighboorhood... In any case, we hope to have you back soon--- take care!
