The Karoline: Old World Charm In A 3 Bedroom 2 Bath Beauty By The Charles Bridge

People8

Property type apartment
Minimum Stay 2 - 5 nights

Overview

About the property

3 Bedrooms, 2 Bathrooms, Sleeps 8

This newly renovated, fully-equipped 3-bed and 2-bath apartment on the 1st floor(2nd floor US) of a historical neo-gothic building just around the corner from the Charles Bridge is for up to 8 guests, and at the same time caters to a smaller, more demanding group or family that wants to have Old World style but in a modern, functioning flat. There are three connecting rooms: the master bedroom with king-size bed(180 cm wide), the living room/sitting room with fireplace(bio-ethynol means real flames but no smoke), cable TV, and a large pull-out sofa, and then the large bedroom with two king-size beds. These rooms all have their own entry/exit doors, so privacy is not a problem. The large master bathroom has a tub/shower, toilet, his and her vanity sinks, and a washer and dryer concealed behind a decorative side panel. The second smaller bath if also fully equipped, with a small sink, shower, and toilet, and both have heated floors. Complementary WiFi works throughout the flat. The fully-equipped kitchen is perfect for making large meals, or even just for a coffee and small breakfast in the morning. Iron and ironing board, all towels and washcloths, and extra bedding are of course provided. Smoking is not permitted in the flat, but we have a small balcony which is perfect for that.

We think that you will appreciate the level of detail that Mark & Mirka put into the flat, from the choice of linens for the beds and selection of furnishings (we have two art nouveau chairs in the kitchen) to the extensive restoration of the ceiling décor and the matching chandeliers. We have really focused on trying to preserve and enhance as many elements from the original construction as possible.

About Mark Grein

Mark Grein is originally from the U.S., but on a chance trip to Europe back in the nineties, he was enchanted by the magical allure of Prague and decided to set up shop here, right in the middle of central Europe not long after the Velvet Revolution. He and his wife Mirka are filmmakers, but decided to try their hand at renovation when they bought this beauty in the heart of the Old Town last year. They did much of the renovation work themselves, especially in restoring the original ceiling stucco decoration, spending many hours up on a ladder covered in wet plaster and paint.

Mark Grein purchased this apartment in 2013

Why Mark Grein chose Old Town

We knew we had something special when we first set eyes on this diamond-in-the-rough. All of the doors in this residential building have wooden entrance doors or portals that are decorative pieces unto themselves. One inside the flat, we saw that the elaborate but faded ceiling decorations were just screaming to be restored, and the original owner had left many of the original details in this old place, such as doors, door handles, parquet floors, windows(including original glass in some of the windows-- look closely and you'll see the tell-tale 'waviness' in some of the panes). The layout was perfect--- three connected rooms, but all with their own entrances/exits, a large and separate kitchen, along with a small balcony. Located on the 1st floor of a neo-gothic buliding just around the corner from the famous Charles Bridge in the heart of the Old Town, but on a side pedestrian street, it just felt like the right place. We think you'll agree :)

What makes this apartment unique

As with all properties, 'genus loci' is the most important thing, and this flat has got it in large amounts. It is the perfect place to begin and end a walking tour of the beautiful city, and the quaint street has many great cafes, fantastic wine bars and restaurants, and even though it's close to the famous bridge, it's managed to hang to a lot of its local character.

Beautifully decorated!! Great location! Well stocked!

  • 5 of 5

It was so nice to have so much space to come back to every afternoon. The two berooms are large and didn’t make you feel you were on top of each other.the bathrooms are some of the nicest we have seen. One is quite small but has a great shower. The kitchen had everything we needed and was clean and upgraded. The style of decor was more traditional which is what we like. Every detail was appreciated! The owners could not have been more accommodating and reached out throughout our stay to make sure we had everything we needed. They even had left bread, cheese, wine and beer for our use. Prague is a beautiful city and I would highly recommend this place for your best experience!

Czech Out This Apartment!

  • 5 of 5

From Klara's warm welcome and cold wine to our final walk along the river, The Karoline was an elegant, comfortable retreat after long days of touring. The apartment is in a perfect location to tour Prague in all directions, whether by foot, tram, bus, or metro. And Mark could not have been more flexible and accommodating after our vacation was nearly ruined when Air Berlin cancelled our flights just weeks before our trip - with no refund. My sister and I enjoyed exploring every corner of Prague and our day trip by train to Podebrady. We will always cherish our memories of the sights, tastes, and experiences in our grandparents' homeland! The best advice we got from Klara that I hope she continues to pass along to future renters - "Go out and get lost." And, "look up!" I would add to this advice: Bring a lightweight hiking boot. Walking on cobblestones is brutal on the feet!!!

Georgeous property

  • 5 of 5

Fantastic property from which to see Prague. The city is gorgeous but this property only enhances the experience. Large and spacious, it accommodated our group of 6 very easily. It was immaculate. Mark made sure we had everything we needed for our stay. Bathrooms were clean and fully supplied. The kitchen has everything you need to make from basic snacks to large meals.

The location is perfect. Prague is not very large. Only a few minute walk to most attractions. It is very close to the river and restaurants. I would highly recommend this property to anyone with a larger group looking for an elegant apartment stay in Prague.

Beautiful Apartment in a Central Area

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I along with another couple spent 4 fabulous nights at this apartment. It is well located in the old town. It is within easy walking distance to all the major sites and attractions. There are numerous great restaurants literally just around the corner from the building. The apartment itself is stunning. It retains its old world charm, but contains all the modern conveniences you need. The apartment is wonderfully decorated, clean, spacious and most comfortable. When we checked in we were met by Klara who spent a lot of time explaining the area and offering suggestions as to what we should see while in Prague. We followed a lot of her advice. Mark, the owner, was very prompt in his replies to my many questions I had prior to our arrival. This apartment is a gem of a find. We would not hesitate to stay here again.

Karoliny Svetle, Prague

  • 5 of 5

This was all it was advertised and much more. A lovely, bright, clean and private space with extra amenities (washer and dryer, drying racks, hair dryer, lots of towels, large entry space, two bathrooms, large bright kitchen with lots of seating) needed for a large family with hungry and social teens. It is a short walk to the tourist sights and also to a grocery store and pharmacy. We were so close to the Charles Bridge that it was easy to go see it while the light was perfect for photos and the crowds were still asleep. A light snack was provided on arrival. Karla provided a wonderful tour synopsis and then guided the teens to quick and affordable late night snacks. The arranged transport from the airport with Petr was smooth and efficient.

This was our first rental. I was worried. The Karoliny has erased that. Thanks Mark and Mirka!
