18th Century House with 21 st Century luxury

With five beautiful en suite bedrooms sleeping ten people, a traditional country- style drawing room, a state-of-the-art kitchen and a cosy snug, the house has got all you need for a comfortable holiday .

But with ultra-modern touches like brand new bathrooms with power showers, underfloor heating and the piece de resistance, a huge sun room with glass on three sides with plenty of space for dining, that’s when your weekend away and special celebration take on a whole new dimension.

The house has central heating throughout with a choice of lighting the open fire, seasoned dried logs all chopped and ready to go.

The utility room has everything you require for laundry.

Wi fi is available throughout the building and smart TV s to watch in drawing room and kitchen.

There are 3.5 acres of a gardener’s paradise at The Old Millhouse, opening out as you come up the gravel drive to where the house sits up high.

The soothing sounds of the river make it hard to believe you’re just a few miles from the city centre, and as you wander the woodland and banks of the South Esk, the wonderful variety of trees means birdsong is never far away. The sweeping green lawns take you to the river,

Fishing can be arranged at no extra charge and the house is perfectly set up for a group of enthusiasts or friends who’d like to try their hand with a rod. The river is home to sea trout and the occasional salmon and depending on the season, its banks are scattered with snowdrops, daffodils and bluebells.

“An idyllic rural retreat set within extensive grounds yet amenities 5mins walk away.”

Perfect house for a large family gathering, with top class furnishings giving a home from home atmosphere. During our stay the charming owners were available to offer local knowledge and to tend the large garden complete with free range chickens and a beautiful river.

Would highly recommend for a holiday any time of year, the open log fire makes it a cosy winter retreat

Old Mill House, Dalkeith

We were a party of 8 from Canada. We stayed for a week in this beautifully restored home. To say that we were "blown away" by this property would be an understatement. With 5 beautiful bedrooms all with modern en suite bathrooms, a huge and beautiful kitchen and the stunning Orangerie, the property provided us with a luxurious yet comfortable base from which we golfed the East Lothian courses. The house sits in its own 3 plus acres of beautiful parkland with the River Esk running through it. And then there were the hens. Yes, we had the services of eight beautiful hens who laid us 8 fresh eggs daily. Quite a treat. Sally was an amazing host. From helping us to settle in to introducing us to Hunters of Kinross who delivered us beautifully prepared, ready-to-cook meals (try their Chicken Balmoral in a Whisky Marinade!) , she set us up for a wonderful holiday. Edinburgh city centre is only a 15 minute train ride from a nearby station and the famous Roslyn Chapel (a must visit) is only 7kms away. And of course, the house is only 20-30 minutes away from some of the best golfing in Scotland - North Berwick, Gullane (try Gullane #1 -it's challenging) and Kilspindie all have great links courses right along the Firth of Forth - so if the golf isn't going so well, you can certainly admire the views. I would highly recommend this property and hope to visit again before too long.

Old Mill Inn, Dalkeith

Our party of 9 seniors enjoyed a week of terrific weather residing in a wonderful 5 ensuite bedroom home under the watchful eye of Sally deWaard and her son Patrick. Sally became a good friend and is certainly a talented hostess. It became apparent that Sally knows many of Dalkeith's residents and they know Sally.

The train to Edinburgh, a 15 minute ride, is only minutes away by car or taxi. From there, Glasgow is another 50 minute train ride. We enjoyed the museums of Edinbrugh, the ship Btitannia and many other local sights. St. Andrews is 35 minutes away by car and North Berwick, a seaside community, is a 15 minute trip.

Sally's kitchen is very well designed for preparing meals and conversation. Morrisons supermarket is 5 minutes away. And then, many fine restaurants can be found in and around Edinbrugh. For those who enjoy breakfast, Sally's hens provide 6-8 eggs a day.

We had 2 rental cars providing transportation and while a 3rd car would have helped, taxis and trains were most helpful.

The Old Mill Inn is right at the top of our list for a relaxing vacation week.

Great family holiday

We had a lovely stay over the Easter holiday with our extended family. The house and grounds are very well maintained. Our little girl loved collecting the fresh eggs from the hens everyday. Sally couldn't have done more to make our stay enjoyable. Would definitely recommend and come back again!

Truly Unique !

From beginning to end, our stay was great, The Old Millhouse in Dalkeith is everything it says on the website and more.

We were on a family celebration and it suited us perfectly. Everything is of an exceptionally high standard.

It is perfect base for Edinburgh and into the surrounding countryside, if you have a car.

The gardens are amazing and perfect for eating outside if the weather permits.

We met Sally the owner who could not be more helpful. You can self cater, or indeed there is a local events company (GH Events) which will provide dinner, which we had one evening and was delicious.

I would recommend it to anyone, and we will return next year.

The Old Millhouse is located in the heart of the old town of Dalkeith. Various historic attractions in the area such as Roslyn Chapel recognised in the book The Da Vinci code. Dalkeith is only 20 minutes to the Capital Edinburgh. Local transport 2 mins walk from our front door. East Lothian Golf courses 25 minutes from the Old Millhouse. Lovely cycle ways and walks all signposted from the house. Many historic buidings to visit in the area.

Perfect location for visiting the Scottish Borders.
