Overview

About the property

17th century Perigourdine property

Les Mirabelles (formerly Fig Tree) - This Gite is part of an ancient farmhouse which is set in its own private grounds of 0.5 acres. The property, which dates from before the French revolution, has been tastefully restored to include all modern amenities without losing its rustic charm and character.

Les Mirabelles (ex-Fig Tree) gite was the old cattle shed, housing hay lofts and oxen which ploughed the local fields and vineyards. Now renovated to a charming, self-contained accommodation, and replicating the characteristic beams, stone walls and floors which is set in the deep French countryside. The gite overlooks the garden and mixed fruit orchard where the chickens roam and provide fresh eggs on request! The gite is secluded and separate from the main farmhouse with its own front door and double door opening on to the garden. Guests have the private use of the swimming pool.

You enter the gite through the front door and you are greeted with an open plan living area which is light and airy.

There are a number of walks - the modest Gardonette stream is an amazing route takings its source not far from Monbazillac and then losing itself in the Dordogne some 50km or so. A journey that mingles between hillsides covered with vineyards, sunflower and cornfields, meadows and small shady valleys which in passing, greets hamlets, or chateaux and provides the rambler with a few surprises! The Gardonette takes the rambler into another experience.

Saussignac takes you approximately 15-20 minutes to reach along an old Roman road through the vines. Gageac has a beautiful chateau and the superb vineyard of 'Clos de Vigne' - the subject of Patricia Atkinson's best selling books - "The Ripening Sun" and "La Belle Saison".

Sigoules is set amongst the vineyards where you will find a selection of shops (baker, butcher, grocery store, a hairdresser and also a doctor and pharmacy!|). For those of you who desire an active outdoor break, the area is very popular with cyclists as there are lots of quiet roads. There are also popular 3 day canoeing trips down the Dordogne with camping provided. Golf (18 hole) at the famous "Chateau de Vigiers" - just a few kilometres away and may be followed by an excellent lunch or dinner in their restaurant. Tennis and horse ricin are among other sports facilities available.

All summer long, the medieval town of Bergerac has many wonderful restaurants - just 15 minutes drive from the gite. Saussignac, Sigoules, Eymet and Issigeac and other local towns have markets, concerts and exhibitions with lots to do and see.

Fig Tree Gite offers you a perfect location from which to base yourself whilst you pursue whatever activities you enjoy most. The gite is set in half-acre of land with typical country garden and chickens roaming peacefully. A private swimming pool which is not overlooked, offers privacy for the bather. The gite accommodation is full of rustic charm with oak beams, a log fire. There is an open plan dining and sitting room, with kitchen attached. A modernised shower/wet room is on the same floor. A mezzanine floor provides bedroom for 2 people. TV is provided with numerous DVD's as well as board games.

Why Jill Smith chose Gardonne

The charm of the French countryside, the history of the house and gite is fascinating both of which is full of rustic character. Believed to date back to before the French revolution this part of France is full of history during the 17th century. Jill has been visiting friends in the Aquitaine region for the last 30 years and has developed a love of the French way of life, its cuisine and the language.

What makes this barn unique

The benefits of the gite offers peace and tranquility in the very rural French countryside. The gite is set in half-acre with a private swimming pool, not overlooked by any neighbouring property. The gite opens out to a lovely garden being disturbed only by the occasional wandering chicken!

The perfect gite.

  • 5 of 5

We have been able to spend 3 weeks at Les Mirabelles - having visited it previously when it was Fig Tree Cottage. The gite is the perfect place to rest and unwind, and has all you need for a self catering holiday. The 'icing on the cake' is the private swimming pool, where you can cool off with a relaxing swim. The new owner, Jill, was the perfect hostess. Jill was always on hand if needed, but also respected our privacy. Her welcome gifts were much appreciated, as were the frequent supplies of fresh eggs and tomatoes.

Les Mirabelles is ideally situated for visiting this part of the Dordogne. We especially enjoyed Issigeac, Monpazier and Eymet. There are lots of places for tasting the local wine. The winery at Sigoules is a must - great wine at great prices.

Thank you Jill. You and your gite are very special.

We hope to see you again next summer.

Owner's Response: It was a great pleasure to host these charming guests who stayed for 3 weeks at "Les Mirabelles". They explored many of the beautiful villages and areas in this region and 'soaked up' the benefits of the swimming pool in the very hot weather ! They were exceptionally respectful of the gite and left it absolutely spotless. I do hope that I may have the pleasure of seeing them again next year.

A peaceful break in a comfortable gite surrounded by beautiful countryside

  • 5 of 5

The gite was well appointed with plenty of space for two. The kitchen was clean and well equipped. The bed up in the rafters on the mezzanine was really cosy. The bathroom was luxurious with a walk in shower and plenty of hot water.

The English tv and WiFi were greatly appreciated. The pool and patio was inviting but despite some really warm days for September, was a little cool for comfort. The gite provided an excellent base for exploring the region - we travelled extensively throughout the valley. From the smallest village to the large towns, everyone was really friendly and made us very welcome. The market at Issigeac and the wine cave at Sagoules are particularly recommended. We loved the hens in the garden and their delicious eggs and the welcome pack was very thoughtful. Most of all We would like to thank Gill and Marylene who were on site and a mine of helpful information on local markets and attractions. Thank you both for making us feel so welcome. We hope to see you both again.

Superb Gite Home from Home

  • 5 of 5

Jill greeted us with such a warm welcome to her beautiful gite. Beautiful surroundings, peaceful and relaxing in the heart of the countryside. The gite was gorgeous and had everything we needed for a lovely chilled stay. Lots of little extras that made our stay. Bath Robes, Slippers, Good quality bed linen, plus more. Jill supplied us with some home made jam and also fresh eggs from the Hens. Both were a nice surprise along with our welcome pack. We also met Jill's friend Marilene who supplied us with some maps for walks around the area and recommendations for places to visit. This holiday has been made so special because such a special couple of people took time out to ensure we enjoyed the full week. It was a holiday to remember for all the right reasons.

Lovely gite in a quiet location

  • 4 of 5

We stayed here for a week in September & had a lovely time. The gite is pretty, very well equipped & the gardens a joy. We didn't try the pool as unfortunately the weather was not great, but it looked a good size. The location is good for exploring the Dordogne & Lot region & it is an easy drive to pretty places such as Sarlat, Issigeac & Monpazier. Jill is a fabulous host, not at all intrusive but available to offer valuable advice & delicious home produced goodies.

Delightful Rural Gite

  • 5 of 5

The property was most attractive with very much a "french" feel, both comfortable and relaxing. We particularly enjoyed the delightful pool especially as the fortnight was very hot and sunny. It was peaceful and quiet. Jill, the owner was most accommodating in ensuring we had an excellent holiday by providing a welcome pack of food stuffs and ongoing contributions including eggs, and produce. Jill was always helpful with information when asked. The property is in a rural location and we enjoyed walks in the vicinity. We were able to explore the bastide towns (Eymet, Duras, Issigeac) , areas along the Dordogne river, and some of the wonderful chateux and wine producing properties in the area. We found some excellent restaurants and enjoyed the wonderful markets for top class fruit and foodstuffs. Bergerac itself we visited several times, enjoying exploring the old town, wine museum , river area and various cafes to stop and savour the atmosphere. All in all you could not ask for more.

A wonderful rural place to stay

  • 5 of 5

We loved this gite. Jill, our host was so very welcoming and friendly. The gite is set in beautiful surrounds made even more special with five friendly and prolific egg laying hens. It is in a great spot to explore the area and it was so peaceful not being in the middle of a busy town. Jill provided us with a lot of information and the hens fresh eggs. We would certainly recommend a stay at this gite. It was a truly wonderful experience and we'd love to come back.
