About Philip Hume

Philip and Jenny live in the main house near to The Studio, so are on hand to help with any queries or advice on places to visit. Philip has researched, written and published a book on aspects of the history of the area. We moved to the area at the end of 2014 and are thoroughly enjoying exploring this beautiful and varied place.

Philip Hume purchased this cabin in 2014

Why Philip Hume chose Shropshire

We immediately fell in love with the secluded, peaceful, location of the property surrounded by woodland and birdsong. The countryside is beautiful, with a host of varied walking landscapes, fascinating historic remains and family visitor attractions. It offers the best of both worlds - rural tranquility with quick access to local market towns. Ludlow is a wonderful, lively place where there always seems to be something going on!

What makes this cabin unique

We converted 'The Studio' from a painter's studio (hence the name!) into the holiday cottage as it is now. In doing so, we were seeking to maintain the lovely light that the artist had needed for his work and feel that we have succeeded in doing so. In order to do this, we have placed the bedrooms on the ground floor and the living area upstairs.

Home from home near Ludlow

  • 5 of 5

We have just been fortunate to discover and stay in this beautiful studio near Ludlow. To say it is beautiful is an understatement. Set in lovely gardens with a completely enclosed decking it was perfect for us with our little dog. The studio is equipped with everything you need for a relaxing break, it was spotlessly clean and completely dog (and child if we had had one) friendly. Philip and Jenny were so helpful and friendly, advising us about opportunities to walk around the area and providing some lovely local food including a fresh baked loaf! Ludlow as a town is a revelation- olde worldy, lovely shops, market and riverside pubs.

We cannot recommend this place enough and we will definitely be returning.

A lovely place with a personal touch

  • 5 of 5

We had a really nice Easter break as a family of three at this lovely place. We loved this hidden little place and the surrounding area.

On our arrival we were greeted with fresh eggs from their own hens, freshly baked bread and cake.

Our ten month old girl loved all the toys that were provided for her. There is a gate for the stairs and also one for the living area so we could relax without having to run after her constantly.

Right next to the lodge is a garden with chickens, a duck and sheep which gave it an extra nice feel.

All in all this was a very nice place in a nice area and we would love to come back in the future.

Thank you so much for a lovely time, Jenny and Philip.

Perfect setting for the whole family

  • 5 of 5

We found the accommodation self sufficient and there are ample things to see around with the kids. My kids loved playing with the sheep and I loved sitting at the terrace and admire the view.

I 100% recommend this accommodation. Thanks for letting us stay at your wonderful accommodation Philip.

It is only ten minutes from historic Ludlow with its medieval castle, excellent food outlets and many festivals.

Lying in 'the Welsh Marches', the area has numerous castles, churches and historic houses - including two National Trust properties, five castles, and twelve or more historic churches all within 15 minutes drive.

In addition, the black and white villages of Herefordshire are only a short distance away. The historic city of Hereford lies half an hour away.

Local traditions are strongly maintained in the area with Morris dancing, wassailing and other rural spectacles still to be enjoyed.

Hay on Wye with its literary festival, the glories of Chirk castle, the mountains of central Wales, Worcester and the Malvern Hills, the Seven Valley Railway, the West Midlands Safari Park, the World Heritage Site of Iron Bridge Gorge, historic Shrewsbury are all no more than an hours drive away.
