About Philip Hume

Philip and Jenny live in the main house near to The Studio, so are on hand to help with any queries or advice on places to visit. Philip has researched, written and published a book on aspects of the history of the area. We moved to the area at the end of 2014 and are thoroughly enjoying exploring this beautiful and varied place.

Philip Hume purchased this cabin in 2014

Why Philip Hume chose Ludlow

We immediately fell in love with the secluded, peaceful, location of the property surrounded by woodland and birdsong. The countryside is beautiful, with a host of varied walking landscapes, fascinating historic remains and family visitor attractions. It offers the best of both worlds - rural tranquility with quick access to local market towns. Ludlow is a wonderful, lively place where there always seems to be something going on!

What makes this cabin unique

We converted 'The Studio' from a painter's studio (hence the name!) into the holiday cottage as it is now. In doing so, we were seeking to maintain the lovely light that the artist had needed for his work and feel that we have succeeded in doing so. In order to do this, we have placed the bedrooms on the ground floor and the living area upstairs.

Our third stay at this beautiful woodland retreat so I guess we must love it.

  • 5 of 5

This is the perfect place for us to get away from it all as a family and leave behind our crazy city lives for a few days. Philip and Jenny have always looked after us very well and are very welcoming, from the fresh bread and cakes on arrival to their tailor-made walking suggestions. I am almost loathed to leave too good a review as it will become too popular! For me (and our dog) the highlight is a pre-breakfast walk in the wood every morning and then a cup of tea on the veranda surrounded by nothing but trees. A unique place.

The Studio - woodland magic

  • 5 of 5

Philip and Jenny have created a little masterpiece, converting the artist's studio into a modern ,well ,equipped, charming , home from home you could ever imagine and if that is not enough, the rental charges are brilliant value , the best we have come across in ages!!!

We enjoyed relaxing and recuperating from the mad hustle and bustle of the city world, we live and work in.Take the circular walk, Jenny recommended, out of the drive ,up through the woods and return on an almost unused (by cars)country lane. The view towards the South Shropshire hills from the top is staggering especially watching the Autumn Sun Rise, which is exactly what Charlie (son), Freddie (dog) and I (Ant) did this morning. Star heaven , complete silence.

Here is the place to be, with lots to do and see in the surrounding area if that's your thing.

The hosts have provided lots of info on the area, with its many attractions and places of interest ,historical and otherwise. We visited Ludlow ,wow it is a cracker of a place -it has a castle, good pubs ,restaurants and walks by the river ,steeped in historical happenings.

But to be honest we were content to hang around the Studio doing very little, walking the dog,

reading, relaxing and absorbing the peace and tranquillity this beautiful place gently washes over you. Do visit the Bakers Arms pub on the outskirts of Orleton . Lovely food and welcoming . You can walk there quite safely ,along the country lane it is about 20 mins away.

Thank you Philip and Jenny for a truly memorable holiday.

Ant,Kirst, and Charlie.

Surrounded by profoundly beautiful gardens

  • 5 of 5

Visiting from a tiny village in British Columbia we were overjoyed to find this amazing gem. Surrounded by profoundly beautiful gardens with ducks, chickens and sheep this adorable cottage was clean, had many amenities and was located in a pristine rural area. We highly recommend this wonderful place for anyone seeking a stay in that region. We were taking a class at Applewood Permaculture Center, a 3 minute walk away and also recommend any students of courses there consider this as a anchor for their course experience.

Wonderful place to stay

  • 5 of 5

I and my son spent 3 days and we had i wonderful time, the log cabin is set out in the sticks away from all the stress of day to day life and in a most beautiful part of England, This is truly a woodland retreat, The owners had very kindly left left us fresh farm food and milk and bread for us so that we had something to eat and drink when we arrived.

Ten out of Ten and more.

Ideal Getaway for relaxing holiday

  • 5 of 5

The property set in its own grounds is ideal to cut yourself off from everything but close enough to Ludlow (15mins Drive) to be able to go out. Phillip & his wife are very knowledgeable of the area and the welcome pack and other items means there was no rush to go out for supplies. Our dogs (Mikey & Stan) enjoyed the garden and surrounding walks and there is no need to go out in the car due to the walks being 2mins up & down the road.

The house is nicely set out with ample room so as not to be under each others feet, with the added bonus of having SKY SPORTS and WI FI you have everything if the weather turns which is a nice change as some other properties you have very limited extras.

Would definitely go back and due to the area and property you could visit anytime of the year.
