What makes this cottage unique

A Brief History of Pudleston Court

Pudleston Court, a Grade II listed building, is a prime example of a period during the mid to late 19th century when it was the fashion for successful industrialists of the day to build large country piles as ostentatious and lasting monuments to their achievements.

It has seen many changes over the centuries, however, from its initial conception as a residence fit for a well-to-do gentleman of the mid-1800s.

Lancashire “coal baron” Elias Chadwick originally commissioned the design and construction of the building in 1846 from Liverpool architect J. T. Brearley, who had produced plans for a lavish Tudor-Gothic style country house to be constructed of coursed pink sandstone, slate roofs and with embattled parapets. The Chadwick family remained in ownership of the estate for several decades.

During the Second World War, the house was used by the British Red Cross as a convalescence home for members of the armed forces injured in battle (author James Herriot stayed there).

In the 1950s, the house was then converted to use as a local authority special school for children with learning difficulties.

Today Pudleston Court is a privately owned country estate.

Guestbook comments from the manager

We stayed here for my wife's 40th birthday as an alternative to CentreParks with our good friends and boy did this place deliver. The accommodation is top drawer beautifully finished and has everything you need and more. The private swimming pool was a great hit with the kids and the sauna and steam room were superb. To top it off the hot tub in the evening once the kids were asleep was blissful. We can see ourselves returning to The Gaggles time and time again. There's lots to do in the area and superb restaurants and foodie places to satisfy anyone's desires As in the title a wonderful find we will be back

Fabulous property, Beautiful countryside, Great Host

  • 5 of 5

Five star, Wow what a find the Gaggles was. Such a beautiful, tranquil house offering a true break away from it all and equipped with everything you could want, set in beautiful countryside, whilst still being close enough to all the amenities you need. The swimming pool was loved by all the family and was a real asset, the steam room and sauna were both large and a great addition. As for Aram and his team of gardeners, they were amazing and couldn’t do enough to help. Nothing was beyond Aram’s attention and care. Thank you for a fantastic two weeks!

Perfect setting, perfect house.

  • 5 of 5

This is a lovely, spacious home in the countryside on a most unique piece of property. The house itself is immaculate and totally updated. The grounds are gorgeous, with walks through the woods and fields to a lovely lake. there is an indoor pool/sauna complex for the exclusive use of guests of The Gaggles and as a family of five, we used it heavily and enjoyed it immensely. Aram and Lucinda were the ideal hosts. Extremely attentive, problem solving and friendly. Highly recommend!!!

Outstanding

  • 5 of 5

This was a special bank holiday weekend reunion to celebrate a special occasion for the whole family. The house and location exceeded expectations. We were lucky to have wonderful weather but even without that, the venue would have lent itself to a memorable stay. The facilities are excellent and the staff most helpful. We will certainly return. Whoever is in charge of cleaning and maintenance congratulations!

Excellent surprise treat for my wife

  • 5 of 5

I have never written a review before but this place is amazing. It turned out to be just the ticket for my wife's surprise 40th with her family. We all loved the pool complex, steam room and sauna. The whole place was spotlessly clean and it felt like we were the first guests to stay there. Well done to the team for a fantastic accommodation, we will be back soon!
