This luxurious, maison de ville, filled with antiques and fine art, is ideally situated in the historic center of the walled town of Beaune in Burgundy, steps from the famed Hospice, the Saturday market and the annual wine auction. Beaune developed in several stages, but in its earliest days was the site of a Roman encampment. The 3-story wall at the back of the house is from the Roman times, dating to about 30 AD. The house was built in the early 1600s and is primarily made of timber and stone, with many of the stones carrying the masons’ monograms. The original wood beams are in place; the largest beams were cured for more than 75 years before they were able to be used in building.
This exquisite and romantic 17th-century maison de ville feels like a French chateau, offering historic, elegant living space. With two full bedrooms each with ensuite bathrooms it comfortably sleeps up to 4 adults. For entertaining, it has a formal dining room for 8 adjacent to a large salon with antique tile floor and oak-beamed ceilings. On the same floor you will find a separate french-style kitchen near the dining room. The large courtyard with limestone flooring and framed by a Roman-built wall offers private, outdoor space for relaxation and a respite from even the hottest summer days.
The ground floor has a quiet, cozy bedroom with ensuite bathroom with WC and modern rainforest 3-way shower. It overlooks the private terrace and remains pleasantly cool during the hot summer months. Also, there is a spacious powder room down the hall. Upstairs is another spacious, quiet and comfortable bedroom with original XVII Century beams and the church spires and old tiled roofs visible from the bedroom windows. This bedroom contains a large en suite bathroom with vanity, full tub with overhead and hand-held showers and a separately contained toilet (WC).
