Our house is a beautiful stone-built property, set in its own enclosed grounds, with a covered swimming pool. It provides excellent holiday accommodation with superb facilities for one or two families and is safe and secure for children.
The property has been extensively restored and improved by us since we purchased it ten years ago. It is located in a small village close to the sea on the quiet Barbanza Peninsula in Galicia, NW Spain. The property is newly available for holiday rentals for the 2016 season. Please check our website (see 'Facilities' tab for address) for further details and to make booking enquiries.
The property sits in an enclosed and secure plot of two thirds of an acre (0.3 hectare). It is a large stone built dwelling with 260 sq.m of interior space on two floors. Upstairs are 3 large bedrooms. The master bedroom is very large with a super-king size bed and a large en-suite bathroom with feature bath, two hand basins and separate rainfall effect shower enclosure. There is a separate dressing area with two large wardrobes and a picture window that provides views to the mountains. The other two bedrooms are both spacious and each has twin 105cm (3ft 6in) beds, although they can be pushed together to make large doubles if required. Both single and double duvets are provided. Each bedroom has large built-in wardrobes. There is a well-equipped family bathroom upstairs with bath and power shower (over the bath, with a shower curtain). The landing has double patio doors leading to an upstairs balcony, where you can soak up the sun and watch the world go by. There is a patio table, four armchairs with cushions, and several sun loungers. Upstairs walls are panted in tasteful pastel colours and all floors are tiled, with large rugs in each bedroom. There are curtains to all bedroom windows.
The living area downstairs is mainly open plan and its design would be suitable for someone less mobile, with level tiled floors and a separate ground floor bathroom and bedroom area if required. The main lounge is extremely large and has a soft leather corner sofa, which seats 5, and two separate armchairs. There is a newly installed log burning stove in the attractive stone fireplace, as well as a 116 cm (46-inch) flat screen digital TV and DVD player. There is a selection of DVD's, books and games provided, which guests are free to use. Off the lounge is a ground floor shower room with toilet. There is also a door to the outside, which leads to a large covered porch and barbecue area with stone table and benches for outdoor eating. The kitchen is large and extremely well-equipped with extensive work surfaces, newly installed (2015) electric oven and hob, fridge-freezer, dishwasher, microwave, toaster and kettle. There is an extendable dining table that comfortably seats 8 people. The kitchen also has a door to the outside (mind your head, though!) with a small porch area and door to the utility room with washing machine and tumble drier. Off the kitchen is a separate lounge with very comfortable, high quality sofa bed that can be used as an additional bedroom if required. This lounge also has its own TV with digibox. As upstairs, all walls are painted in pastel colours and tastefully decorated, and all floors are tiled.
The property has an electricity supply but no municipal water, gas or sewerage. Water is provided via a well (which can run low in the late summer in very dry years) and sewerage is via a septic tank, newly installed a few years ago. The property has a reasonably fast (3.5 Mb/sec) wireless broadband connection, which will be available to guests.
Outside the house, the plot is mostly grassed (we have a badminton net!) with numerous young fruit trees, and ornamental areas with attractive shrubs. There is a large covered swimming pool (10m x 5m) and parking for several cars. The plot is walled, fenced and gated so is secure for children to play.
This is a very beautiful, tranquil and unspoilt part of Spain, where a traditional Galician life prevails and which has been only gently touched by tourism. You will find all your basic needs and some very warm, friendly and welcoming people, but don't expect luxury nor much English to be spoken, and certainly not any 'English Bars'. This is a place to immerse yourself in Spanish culture and enjoy warm, honest hospitality. You're in for a treat if you are a seafood lover as this region is reputed as having the best seafood in Spain, especially shell fish. For meat lovers, you won't be disappointed either, the quality of the meat reflecting the lush, green vegetation of the region. Whatever your tastes, the local food is always served fresh.
The property is close to several beaches, which even in high season are not busy due to the relatively unknown location. The beaches vary, so that on the Atlantic side they can be quite rough, making them popular with surfers, kite surfers and other thrill seekers. On the ria (estuary) side, however, the beaches are much calmer, making them more suitable for families with small/young children. Whichever beach you choose, though, you can be assured of long stretches of golden sands, interspersed with rocky promontories. At certain times of the year you'll also see schools of dolphins, who like to surf with the surfers!
There is a lovely lagoon near the house, ideal for those interested in the bird/wild life. For others, it is simply a beautiful walk, especially on a summer's evening with the smell of the eucalyptus trees in the air.
Out and about there are many places to eat and drink and we have a list in the house to give you some ideas, although typically in this area the menus are all pretty similar. The closest towns are Ribeira and Porto do Son, each about 10km away, providing all essential amenities. Ribeira especially has a good selection of shops. A little further afield, you have the beautiful historic tourist city of Santiago de Compostela, with its famous cathedral, which is about a 50 min drive. Other coastal cities of La Coruna, Pontevedra and Vigo are also accessible. If you venture further inland, you will find dramatic mountains and the historic Roman cities of Lugo and Ourense (each about a 2 hour drive).
