About Tony Bull

A native of Leigh on Sea in Essex I got to know this area in 1974 when we arranged an exchange for our children with a French military family whose 'summer and family home' was in this area. After many visits to this family we purchased, 1989, our own 'holiday home' in Bellenot. On my retirement in 1995 we moved permanetly to Bellenot. In 2001 we purchased a barn to store a small sailing dinghy and with it came a semi derelict cottage which had not been lived in for sixty years A local society then approached us and asked could we not save the cottage from becoming a ruin. This we did and, as the saying goes, the rest is history.

Tony Bull purchased this cottage in 2001

Why Tony Bull chose Bellenot-sous-Pouilly

My own children and grandchildren together with other family members and friends have, since 1989, enjoyed coming to this area time after time. This is one very important reason why we renovated the cottage so that it could all be enjoyed by others.

What makes this cottage unique

The grandparents of the local farmer, now retired, who sold us the property is delighted that his old family home, which had not been lived in for 60years, has been saved and is being enjoyed by so many people. We have been delighted to welcome many guests from all over the world who, without exception, have fallen in love with both the cottage and the surrounding area. In particular they have really enjoyed cycling along the canal and in the surrounding countryside. (modern bikes are at our guests disposal and others can be hired fro Pouilly), visiting all the many historic sites, enjoyed Dijon and Beaune (in particular sampling the wine at Beaune and other famous wine villages), swimming in the reservoir, A pleasure boat operates from Pouilly giving canal trips even passing through a 3km tunnel under the town. There are many way marked walks in this beautiful & sparsly occupied area. One guest said that if there is a paradise on earth then this must surly either be it or very near to it!

Lovely place surrounded in a beautiful French countryside

  • 4 of 5

This is nice and very well equipped cottage and we found the beds/mattresses extremely comfortable including the twin beds!!

Tony is very warm, genuine person and has made us feel very welcome. The countryside around this cottage is wonderful and it's very peaceful.

There is a nice lake where one can swim around 10minutes drive from the cottage. Another lake where swimming is permitted is under 20 minutes drive.

There is plenty of outdoor activities all around this area including walking, swimming, cycling.

We have 2 boys (3&5 yrs old) and the weather wasn't good to us so we did struggle a little to find activities but there are couple of indoor play areas in Dijon and an indoor swimming pool in Montbard, which saved us when it rained.

The only thing why I not give 5* is we would prefer a bigger garden for the boys to run around (this is a lovely garden but not for running around) but this is not Tony's fault but mistake on our part as haven't questioned Tony prior to our arrival and booking!

All in all would definitely recommend this cottage and the area!

Thank you Tony for your help trying to find things for the wet days.

Great cottage. Good location for Exploring.

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our early spring stay in this cosy, well equipped cottage on the edge of the pretty village of Bellenot. It proved to be a great base for exploring the Morvan national park and provided easy access to the historic cities of Dijon and Beaune with all its surrounding vineyards. Nearby Pouilly has a good supermarket and local shops including a regional products outlet.

There are a number of fascinating picturesque historic towns and villages within a short drive, some of which, like Chateauneuf, look largely untouched for hundreds of years. Dijon, less than an hour away, is well worth a full day, having many beautiful buildings, an excellent art museum and many shops and restaurants. To the west the Morvan provides vast areas of forrest and quiet rolling farmland if you want to be close to nature. There was plenty of wildlife on to see – we spotted deer, red squirrels and a salamander.

We were made to feel very at home with a great welcome pack (the best we've had) and a good supply of wood for the efficient wood burner (well, it was March). There is some information about the history of the house which was interesting to read, and there are some lovely old artefacts on display too.

In summary, good house, interesting area, great holiday!

Owner's Response: Marc & his lady wife proved to be ideal guests and whilst the weather could have been better they made full use of the facilities and explored the many historical, some World Heritage, sites in the area. Thank you both for staying in Bellenot and for writing this review. Tony

An excellent stay in Burgundy

  • 5 of 5

Tony is a most welcoming, helpful host who provides a welcome basket which is second to none. A word of advice - don't go shopping until you have seen the items in the basket. Very clean, convenient, comfortable house with all cooking facilities and washing machine etc. Parking outside the door and an easy drive into Pouilly en Auxois. We ate in the Hotel de la Poste in Pouilly where the service was excellent and for a real treat visit Chez Camille .

A lovely place to stay

  • 5 of 5

It’s hard to add much to all of the positive reviews, and in fact it’s all true. This is a super place to stay. Tony’s welcome is as warm as they all say, and the facilities provided in this sympathetically-renovated cottage were all we needed and more. Bellenot provides an excellent centre for exploring this part of Burgundy; almost every village is mediaeval, and the locals proud to share their heritage with you in a relaxed and friendly way.

There is much too much to see in a week, although of course we tried. From Vézelay and Fontenay in the north, to Bibracte (don’t miss it!) in the south, taking in smaller places in between. Take the small roads – you won’t regret it. And then, of course, there’s Dijon, Beaune, and much more besides. We stayed during the Journées du Patrimoine so managed to visit some places that are usually not open to the public (if you get the chance, the Chateau de Eguilly is remarkable).

All of this says that we recommend “Les Rossignols” wholeheartedly, and hope to be back. Thanks, Tony !

Charming cottage in Bellenot

  • 5 of 5

We loved the cottage and surroundings. The cottage is very well equipped, cosy and comfortable, with charm and history and perfect for a home base. Also clean and well maintained.

The local town of Pouilly has enough shops for food and wine and a couple of bars to be sociable.

A perfect place to stay, thanks Tony for a wonderful holiday in your cottage and we would certainly recommend this property.

Lovely house, peaceful setting, wonderful host

  • 5 of 5

This well-kept, clean and beautifully renovated farmhouse was the perfect place to stay while enjoying Burgundy. We were welcomed with a wonderful basket of local food, all of which we enjoyed over our stay. The house itself is bright and well-equipped and when it got a bit chilly we just built a fire and it was warm in no time. It's close to any amenity you would need and the surrounding area was full of places to explore. Our host Tony was most helpful and truly a delightful person to visit with. This would be a great house for a couple, a small family, or as we were, four adults. We don't hesitate to recommend this if you're looking for a quiet country holiday. Oh yes, and we found all of the locals the friendliest we had encountered in our 3 weeks in France!
