Luxurious 4 bedroom elegant bourgeoise townhouse, with riverside garden

This elegant home comfortably sleeps up to 8 guests in 4 spacious bedrooms, with 2 ensuite bathrooms, family bathroom and a cloakroom.

Set over 3 floors the house offers a large well equipped kitchen opening into a dining room with an open fire, a large lounge, with open fire and a balcony overlooking the river.

The house has been decorated and furnished to an exceptionally high standard, having been modernised and renovated in early 2016, with a new kitchen, bathrooms and total redecoration, offering luxury and comfort in a beautiful setting, we have given a great deal of thought to your stay.

The garden leads directly onto the river Charente and we are happy to leave our canoes and kayaks at the house for your use for the duration of your stay.

For watersport enthusiasts the area is ideal, in addition to the canoes and kayaks you can hire a boat and explore the river, sail up to Port d'envaux stop for lunch and then continue to Taillebourg where you can try your hand at Water Skiing and Wakeboarding

About Debbie & Alan Cakebread

We have lived in Saint Savinien sur Charente since 2004 with our 3 children. We have always loved the houses on Quai des Fleurs and when the opportunity arose earlier this year to buy one of these beautiful riverside townhouses, we jumped at the chance. We both work in the area and our 'no longer small' children go to school in Saintes and La Rochelle

Why Debbie & Alan Cakebread chose Saint-Savinien

Our home on Quai des Fleurs offers the ideal balance between a calm and tranquil location and a town setting.

The river Charente which runs through the town is not only beautiful but offers a variety activities, such as canoeing, kayaking and boating.

In our small picturesque town we have the benefit of a heated outdoor pool complex which is just a short walk from the house, made up of 3 pools geared for toddlers up to the most experienced swimmers, with slides, table tennis, grassy banks for sunbathing and a cafe it really is a great way to spend an afternoon, or for older children/ teenagers to be able to go to independently, without the need of a lift from Mum or Dad!.

Hire a boat for an hour or the whole day and explore the river

Tenis courts are available for hire in the town.

Our local riding stables are only 5km from the house, hacking in the woods through to lessons for the most experienced rider are avaiable.

Explore the town and its shops, cafes and restaurants, there is a twice weekly market for fresh local produce

What makes this house unique

The situation of the house is ideal for those who wish to leave the car at home, fly into La Rochelle or Bordeaux and take the train to St Savinien, the property is a short walk from the train station, you can then explore St Savinien and the Charente in one of our Canoes or Kayaks, or if you want to go further afield take the train to La Rochelle, Bordeaux, Saintes or Rochefort. This makes the property ideal if you want a short break / long weekend away with friends or family.

The house has some beautiful original features, the property was built by a merchant in the early 1800's, it is one of two identical houses built for his two daughters.

With a large sweeping staircase in the centre of the house and a stained glass window letting light down from the roof onto the staircase, tall ceilings and wood panelling, it is the epitomy of a 'Maison bourgeoise'.

We have renovated the property to a very high standard whilst trying to retain these original features.

The house is set over 3 floors, with bedrooms on the ground and 2nd floor and the living accomodation on the first floor.

The riverside garden is a great place to relax and watch the river and occasional boat sail by.

The house and garden are both charming, the photographs on the website are even better in real life. Debbie, Alan and Jack are great hosts and could not have been more helpful,even though the fishing advice didn't lead to any fish getting caught. Thank you for a holiday we will remember fondly.

Fantastic House - highly recommended

The photos do not do this wonderful property justice. It's elegant with a clever combination of period pieces and high end bathrooms and kitchen. Spacious so if you are a couple of families there is ample opportunity for privacy yet you can all be together round the large kitchen table, on the squishy sofas or out in the garden, by the river enjoying the BBQ. An ideal base with chateaux on the doorstep, interesting towns, an hour from beautiful beaches - perfect. The village has all the amenities you need - small shops, boulangeries, traiteurs (deli), bars, restaurants and a great supermarket just up the road. Communication from Debbie from booking onwards was great and her warm welcome just what we needed after a long drive. Highly recommended and you can book with confidence.

Lovely spot

Stayed 5 nights with two families (4 adults and 4 kids ages 2 to 6). The house is beautiful and Debbie was extremely helpful and welcoming and a pleasure to interact with. The garden and view of the Charente are a huge plus.

A well appointed house with all modern equipment while maintaining an old and original feel to it, enjoyed the stay. However, things were beginning to close down after the high season i.e, restaurants. We would love to return!

Wonderful holiday! Beautiful, sympathetically renovated house beside the River Charente.

Just returned from Debbie and Alan's beautiful house in Saint Savinien having enjoyed every minute! From the warm welcome to the sad goodbye! The house is charming and very atmospheric but with modern luxury bathrooms and kitchen.The photos on the website give a good impression but in reality it is even better!

St Savinien is very picturesque and traditional with pretty Riverside areas.

Plenty of interesting places to visit nearby .La Rochelle, beaches of the Cotes Sauvage (near the lifeguards!) and calmer beaches at St Palais ,Rochforte ( indoor and outdoor markets), Isle D'Oleron and Isle de Re to name a few.

Debbie and Alan have thought of everything needed to create a perfect holiday!

Ps don't forget to leave enough time to use the kayaks provided with the house to have a breeze down the river...Great experience!

Fantastic house in a beautiful location

We spent a week in this fantastic house and loved every minute - lots of great features and loads of space! 5 minute walk to a local bakery to get breakfast which was had on the balcony overlooking the river. We had lunch one day in the garden by the river which was also great. The owners were brilliant when the kettle didn't work properly, getting us a new one within 40 minutes! St Savinien is a beautiful location with the river, a 12th Century church, a good range of local shops, a railway station (40 mins to La Rochelle) and a new supermarket. Overall a wonderful week's holiday - you won't regret staying here.

The small picturesque market town of Saint Savinien has all you need if you wish to stay closer to home, with the river Charente running through the town there are lots water based activities, plus bars, shops and restaurants, all within a short stroll of the house.

Swimming, Tennis, Horse riding and canoeing are just a few of the activities on our doorstep.

There is a small train station in the town with trains running to La Rochelle, Saintes, Rochefort and Bordeaux you could easily leave your car at home and still be able to explore this beautiful region, ideal for a long weekend away combined with a sightseeing visit or shopping spree.

The town of La Rochelle with its beautiful architecture, fabulous restaurants, pavement cafes and plenty of boutique shops has something for everyone, the Aquarium, which is one of the biggest in Europe is situated on one of the ports from where you can stroll into town, or alternatively opt for a short boat ride to the old port.

In Saint Savinien itself you can hire a boat (from an hour up to a day) and explore the river and our beautiful local villages, sail or canoe up to Port d'envaux, stop for lunch in one of their fabulous restaurants and drift home afterwards.

Close by are the miles and miles of sandy beaches on the Atlantic coast, where you can surf, swim or simply laze in the sun

Go Island hopping and visit the distinctly different Islands of the Charente Maritime;

Ile de Ré is a chic and charming Island, with cobbled streets, boutique shops, restaurants clustered around small and fashionable ports, you can hire a bike and cycle around the Island with over 100km of cycle paths.

Ile d'Aix is accessible only by a small passenger ferry which runs hourly throughout the summer, once off the boat hire a bike and enjoy the beauty of this small Island with its many coves, take a picnic or stop for lunch in one of the Islands restauants.

Ile d'Oleron is the biggest of the Islands, with it's traditional fishing ports and miles and miles of sandy beaches, great for surfing, cycling or simply enjoying the Atlantic waves.

The Charente Maritime is a region of seafood – fresh and cheap in the markets, restaurants and oyster bars, visit the distilleries in nearby Cognac and tour a vineyard or two locally and of course you must try the local Pineau.
