About John Brierley

John & Katy bought the farm house and outbuildings in 2012. They converted the old stable and cart shed between 2013 to 2015 into a beautiful holiday cottage, using reclaimed and sustainable materials.

A second holiday cottage is now planned.

They live in the attached farm house and are available to welcome new guests and help out if needed.

Guestbook comments from the owner

John and Katy were so welcoming and incredible hosts. We had a family get together so there was 6 of us plus a dog. The welcome basket (homemade bread, jam, butter, fresh eggs etc.) was superb and even had a little basket for Evie our dog. The Cart Shed has been renovated to a high standard- the photos and description are spot on, although the place is even better in person than it is in the photos. The rooms were clean and tidy and beds comfortable. Shower in bedroom one is amazing! Kitchen had everything we needed and the added bonus of a BBQ in the garden is a wonderful touch and we were glad the weather was so good that we got to use it. The location is excellent and easily accessible to visit places- we visited many places including Whitby, York and Fraisthorpe beach which was beautiful and you can take dogs. Overall I can not recommend the Cart Shed at Swallows Nest enough, although I want to keep it a secret so we can return whenever we like! We are looking forward to booking again in the future and seeing the future renovations.

Amazing hospitality our hosts really went the extra mile

  • 5 of 5

The property is lovely and has all you need for a pleasant and relaxing stay. John and Katie made us feel really welcome with home made scones and a hamper of goodies on our arrival including a bottle of prosecco! They even made a lovely Victoria sponge for us to celebrate my daughter’s birthday. There was a plentiful supply of delicious eggs from their hens and my granddaughter got to help John to feed the hens and to look for eggs.

There is plenty to do in the surrounding area and the information that they provided was very helpful.

A wonderful stay with our daughter, her partner and our two granddaughters not forgeting Tiffin our dog

A perfect spot

  • 5 of 5

We were greeted with a welcome hamper of, home made scones, locally produced jam, butter and a bottle of organic Prossecco. The owners own hens provided fresh eggs for our stay.

The cart house was lovely with a large open plan living, dining area. Everything we could possibly need was provided with a fully fitted kitchen including dishwasher and a washer/dryer. To the front is a large shared gravelled area and to the rear is a lovely sunny private patio. Bird feeders attract all sorts of birds and we were lucky there were books on hand to help us identify them while drinking our early morning coffee in glorious sunshine. Outside the fence there is an old log with a sign saying "Bird Cafe" and if that wasnt enough we spotted rabbits, deer and baby partridge.

The bedrooms are comfortable and very well decorated. Two rooms have en suite bathrooms with one suitable for less able bodied having a large wet room. The bedrooms are set on a long corridor which has the main bathroom at the end. The lovely thick towels provided were yet another luxurious touch. There are little hints to what the cart house used to look like before it was renovated and everything has been very well done.

Nothing was too much trouble for the owners John and Katy. They take recycling seriously which is important these days. They even offered to take care of our dogs while we attended a wedding in the area.

We would love to return in the winter if only to use the beautiful wood stove as it would be so cosy. We had beautiful weather during our stay so the underfloor heating was never tested.

John and Katy are a credit to the holiday industry and couldnt have made our stay any better. Thank you

Peace and nature in abundance

  • 5 of 5

A perfect place to relax and plenty of interesting places to visit nearby. After a day out it is wonderful to return to such a perfect setting. There is plenty of outstanding places to eat in the local town but if you order the fantastic local fish and chips beware of the large portion as it really is big!!!
