CASA DE GIBBY, a unique lakeside retreat mixing nature with civilization Hudson Valley style.
We have 2 bedrooms upstairs that sleeps 6. Basement can sleep 2 in beds 2 on futon/couch. Basement has second full bath, rec room, mini fridge. The basement is unfinished, meaning painted cinder block walls, painted concrete floor--I.e. not the Hilton down there. In the summer it is very cool, it has electric heat and a gas fireplace for the winter.
**Basement is included in all stays for no additional fee.**
Pets are considered with additional pet fee, see list of breeds not allowed.
Two kayaks provided with rental.
Approximately 10 minutes from thruway exit 18, New Paltz, Rosendale and the Hudson River marinas at Kingston's waterfront... this is where your vacation starts. Located on Sturgeon Pool we have specifically designed the backyard to provide you access to the lake in a way not even the locals can experience in such an intimate and diverse manner. With four different landscaped tiers rising from the dock on the lake, to the stainless steel BBQ on the deck, and the screened in porch... you might not even care what the house or the region has to offer you. Here you will make truly one of a kind memories as you enjoy participating in and becoming part of what the Hudson Valley has to offer, without even leaving the property.
BOATING, CAMPING, BBQ: From the dock you can set off in the kayaks that come with the house to go fishing for perch and big mouth bass, or just stay on shore with the cooler, sunning and entertaining on the deck and patio. For the young at heart or nature starved, camp out next to a huge fire pit and have a bonfire at night followed by a sunday morning camp fire brunch. Up by the house you can BBQ from the deck with a table for 8, as you look out on the lake, or catch up with friends from the comfort of couches on the screened in porch.
EAT, ENTERTAIN: As much as we LOVE the back yard, we have spent just as much time renovating the interior to keep up with what the lake has to offer. We redesigned the kitchen so it is easy to cook a great meal and share the time entertaining friends and family. We added a wine bar serving the living room with it's own fridge, and a Love seat nook under a vaulted ceiling and skylight with a special view of the water. This way you, your family and friends are always close and sharing your time together in comfort and style.
LOCAL KNOWLEDGE: If you do feel the need to leave the property there is a ton of stuff to do and our location puts you central, yet remote, to all of it. We have lived here 20 years, 90 minutes from NYC and there is still a lot to share and discover and this is the best spot to set up your base of operations!!
BASEMENT REC ROOM, is a world away from the kitchen, it's like an additional apartment for the kids with Dvd and Wii entertainment, mini fridge, sink, full bathroom and toaster oven. This room is unfinished, the pictures show the concrete walls and floor. Gaming table, older fooseball table, an old kids (small) pool table, with bunk beds. It's great for additional guests or just a fun place for the kids to hang out so parents can have a little break. Washer/Dryer is included for one week stays or more. Tends to be cool in the summer and like a basement, not like a Hilton hotel. If you expect adults to stay down there, please make them aware of these "rustic" accomodations.
15 MIN DRIVE: The 'GUNKS' of New Paltz are internationally recognized for the rock climbing as well as 'the Mountain House' and the trail network from the 1800's that connects it all up on the hill. Down in town is the countries oldest main street from 1600's the 'Hugenot', a park where Sojourner Truth spent her afternoons and over 40 miles of rail trail network for cycling and hiking right down the middle of it all. The trail and canal system from back in the day is everywhere and the state is constantly renovating and reclaiming it. This network now includes the worlds longest pedestrian walkway (Walkway over the Hudson) repurposing one of the countries first steel bridges ever built.
Literally up the road is Kingston's water front the Rondout with fine dining, pubs, boutique shopping, and marinas where you can dock your boat to go out on the Hudson while you fish for striped bass on their annual fall migration from the sea up the Hudson.
Tour the valley's back roads discovering winerys, apple farms, culture, art, and spiritual learning centers like a Buddhist monestary outside of Woodstock to the Omega institute, a self sustaining building, yoga and spiritual workshop center. We are also spoiled with world class dining all over simply because the Culinary Institute of America is just across the river, so even our 'BAR' food can be a special meal, and the fine dining establishments... forget about it!
Essentially we are at the foot hills to the Catskills, we are where NYC civilized and art has been escaping for decades to mash up with country rural, to make the Hudson Valley a vibrant, cultured, yet down to earth lifestyle you can experience.
30 MIN DRIVE: Venture into the mountains for more Art & Music, the legendary Woodstock. Levon Helms, Bob Dylan and The Band called this home and now the Bearsville Theater, UPAC and Bethel woods continue the musical heritage with small venue bragging rites hosting 'local talent' to large outdoor music events.
Skiing in the winter, to fly fishing and mountain biking the trails of summer, the Catskills are an underdeveloped gem of the east coast. I am very fond of our mountain biking single track that is a roller coaster of roots, rocks and vistas. There are no major up hills with out a down hill reward just around the corner. And you can road cycle out of the driveway and be on a winding back country road leading all the way to Hudson River within 200 yards of the mailbox. Remember I mentioned the 'WALKWAY OVER THE HUDSON'? Well, there is an elevator that connects the Walkway bridge to the Poughkeepsie train station, last stop on the Hudson Line out of Grand Central. YES, THATS RIGHT, YOU COULD LITERALLY BIKE BACK COUNTRY ROADS AND RAIL TRAIL FROM HERE TO THE WALKWAY AND CATCH A TRAIN INTO NYC GRAND CENTRAL WITH YOUR BIKE... or vise versa. First one to do that... I'll give you TWO NIGHTS FREE!!
TIME TO CHILLAX. When your finally done running around eating, entertaining, soaking up what Hudson Valley life is all about and your ready to drop, the bedrooms await. Now your personal comfort is our priority and each room has it's own heating and AC unit so you can make it just the way YOU want it. Wi-fi signals are strong and USB ports are bedside. An ethernet plug-in is at the work desk in the master bedroom, if you need drop your lap top and set up to take care of business during your stay. Bath towels are provided.
The 'King Room' features a beautiful year round view of the water with a king bed, antique desk, dresser and grandmother clock from the 1920's. Desk has an ethernet cable to connect to your laptop for secure internet connection. King bed has usb ports built in. Plenty of closet space and room for your luggage. Each bedroom has hooks to hang up wet towels or clothes and the house has trays for serving breakfast in bed!
The 'Queen Room' features a queen bed and a trundle bed with two twins. This room is the perfect size for a couple with kids or 4 grownups! It also features a desk for getting some work done, a dresser, a large closet with lots of hangers and cubbies for your clothes. Alarm clock has built in usb so you can easily charge your cell phone while you sleep. Lots of extra blankets in each room. A full compliment of towels is provided.
The living room features a fireplace with a super comfy couch that you won't want to get out of - in front of a wall-mounted flat screen. Plenty of channels from TWC plus we kept up with new tech and the TV has Chromecast so you can sync up to your mobile devices to browse online via the TV or watch your Netflix or YouTube account.
Our dining room table seats 6 people but there is easily room for 2 more.
The kitchen features all brand new appliances, including a 5 burner gas stove, microwave, dishwasher, and a large refrigerator. There are tons of glasses: wine, margarita, champagne, water glasses, rocks, mason jars, shot glasses and plastic for the kiddies.
Due to the importance of a good day starting right with a good cup of coffee, it has it's own station with a french press, bean grinder, a coffeemaker, and an electric water kettle.
There is a toaster, blender, turkey roasting pan plus a crockpot and electric griddle, waffle maker for those pancake breakfasts or second cooking surface. The kitchen has a huge picture window that looks out onto the water- so here at Casa de Gibby even washing dishes with the view makes it enjoyable! The window also opens onto the screened-in porch so you won't miss a thing. There is also a cafe style breakfast table for two or the 'kids table'.
We have a shed with 2 kayaks, paddles and life jackets available to cruise around on the calm waters. Super relaxing and kids love to do this. (Beach towels are not provided and renter assumes all liability for being in water).
Washer and dryer are available to week and month long renters.
Although smoking is not permitted inside the house, we have not forgotten your need. The front entrance has a small wooden deck as well as a small garden bench surrounded by straw berries. The Garden bench is under the house roof and is also a great spot to sit and watch the rain and stay dry.
Please find us and "Like" our Facebook page "Casa de Gibby".
Hi, we are Scott and Stephanie Gibson. We have 3 sons and live nearby in New Paltz. This home was originally purchased to be a getaway for extended family. We have spent the last year renovating, including opening up the kitchen wall to make it open to the living room, installing a skylight, painting everything, making custom furniture and decorating it from top to bottom with brand new mattresses, appliances and linens.
We decided to do all of this so we could better integrate the property into the lifestyle we want to live, adventure travel. Stephanie is a flight attendant and I am designer with a line of back packs for long distance cycling or bike packing. Everything we love about life kinda centers around travel and getting to see the world, going on vacation. Everything we need, we have found right here in the Hudson Valley and so we have poured all of this love, passion and lifestyle into remaking this house to fit the life we want for ourselves, our children and honestly everyone else. Wouldn't it be great if life was just a big adventure?? Guess what.. IT IS:-)
We are opening the house for the first time to the public this November. We have had many happy times here as a family for the past 7 years and we hope you will come visit!
Art and creativity and inspiring people are important things to us. We have hung art for you to reflect upon from friends, co-workers and myself. As time goes by we will also be furnishing the property with arts and crafts from local Hudson valley artists other then myself. It's a rich a vibrant art community I live in up here and I want you all to taste of much of it as you can.
Scott Gibson purchased this house in 2007
The Hudson Valley has so much to offer, every season of the year, and really is the greatest place to live. If you vacation here you may want to stay forever.
There aren't many lakes in our area you can have a house on with shore, boating, fishing and swimming. Most are reservoirs for NYC or smaller private lakes. I had been wishing for something on Sturgeon Pool for 15 years so when this house became available i jumped on it. It's closer to everything then you'd think and just being next to water can be an experience in and of itself.
We want our guests to feel as comfortable as they would at home. While we have decorated it with some family heirlooms, such as the drawing in the dining room from a great grandmother, we didn't want to make it so precious that you can't relax and put your feet up wherever.
The view of the water cannot be beat, your blood pressure immediately drops and it will be hard to go out and experience all the amazing things in our community. While we hope you go out and enjoy all the things our area has to offer, you will be just as happy staying 'home' and relaxing. We strive to make every guest happy and if there is anything we have forgotten, please let us know.
The Dock, the Fire Pit, Camping by the water, Fishing.
This house was the perfect spot to relax and have fun. The fact that it's right on the water and that there are kayaks to use make it so convenient. The kitchen was very clean and have pretty much everything needed to cook a great meal. There was plenty of space and our group of friends would love to come back some time. Just a really nice, chill spot to enjoy company and be outdoors.
The property is very nice. House is set up nicely. Big flat screen tv, really good ac's and a very well stocked kitchen. The highlights of the house are the two decks and lake. The upper deck is screened and and nicely shaded. The lower deck is open and has a nice gas grill. I am a tall, big guy, so the shower was a pleasure. It's a nice, big walk-in shower. My wife enjoyed the quiet as she read her book and watched the lake. I have a bad knee, so walking down to the lake was a bit challenging. It's a little steep. My wife didn't seem to have a problem. We had a close friend of the family visited one day with her little boy and he made good use of the swing and slide in the back. Scott was very accommodating and let us know all that we have to do is call if we needed something. Definitely recommended!
My boyfriend plays professional baseball and for AllStar break we really wanted a relaxing vacation. Casa de Gibby exceeded all expectations we had! Check-in and check-out was so easy. The house literally has everything you would need, and more! They even had a dog bed and dog bowls for our furry friend. The pictures don't do this place justice. The sunsets were absolutely beautiful..I'm sure the sunrises are just as beautiful, but the beds were so comfortable, nothing could have awaken us from our peaceful sleep. Scott was very quick to respond to any questions or concerns we had. Scott mentioned the wine bar "Jar'd" in the town of New Paltz, which was a 10 minute drive from the house. Jar'd was awesome! We absolutely loved their local wine and beer, and the local cheeses were unbeatable! I could go on and on about this house, but you just have to check it out yourself! We fell in love with the home, with the locals, and the towns surrounding!
Thank you again for letting us borrow your home..We definitely look forward to renting your home again!
This is my second time I have stay in the Gibson house and once again it was lovely. It was a pleasure to take my family and celebrate my nephew birthday. Thank you again for this lovely rental. See you in the future! Thanks Liz
Cozy atmosphere during the holidays with Xmas tree already set up when we got there! Property clean and well maintained. Pleasure working with Scott and Stephanie. We didn't use the downstairs though since it was a bit musty. I'd like to come back and stay during the summer to take advantage of the lake!
We recently spent New Years weekend there. Upon arrival found decorations waiting for us and a well appointed home. Owners are attentive to detail and the home is extremely well maintained. Town is nearby
Overall the 5 of us and our for had an awesome 4 days
Casa De Gibby is located between Kingston and New Paltz NY in the Hudson Valley region. Known for apple farms, world class rock climbing, mountain biking, art, music, and the mighty Hudson River. (Some say we are the new Hamptons...)
Casa De Gibby is centrally located for the region, surrounding towns include the legendary Woodstock, only a 40 minute drive into the Catskills with skiing and fly fishing as well as scenic train rides available. The house is under 15 min. from 3 diverse communities but remote as it sits on Sturgeon Pool, a lake which feeds into the Rondout marina and Hudson River just 8 min down the road.
The Rondout of Kingston boasts great night life and restaurants on the water and in the fall is flooded with sport fishers catching sea bass as they migrate up the Hudson to spawn. (Charters are available) Kingston was the first capital on NY and as such has many historic sites and old stone houses. It also has a growing art community with first Saturdays art galleries opening their doors creating a fun tour of the town.
While up on the ridge to the west sits the Mohonk Mountain House, a 5 star spa which can be booked for treatments and has 6,000 acres of hiking and outdoor activities available. Minnewaska State Park is also part of the ridge reserve and is great for swimming, biking and hiking.
Down in town to the south, surrounded by farms and local produce street stands, sits SUNY New Paltz. The college ensures the options for drinking in New Paltz are many, varied, and jumping while it also breathes hipster life into the community, shopping and retail environment.
Looking for music....? if local pubs or Woodstock isn't enough the UPAC in Kingston has headliner live shows and is an amazing intimate venue!
Looking for an open air walking market? Check out Water St. Market in New Paltz just off the rail trail which, by the way, allows you to bike ride over 30 miles of trail from Kingston to Gardiner. Water St. has a great antique barn, shops for goodies and cheese and the most fun wine bar called Jar'd. The local rail trail network also has the world's longest pedestrian walkway, the Walkway OverThe Hudson, connecting Poughkeepsie and it's train station to Highland and the entire HV region.
If you don't want to cook all the restaurants in the entire Hudson Valley are great because the world class cooking school, The Culinary Institute of America, is 'local'.
Want to slow down and feel the local vibe, go north- Rosendale is for you. It has it's own independent movie theatre, eclectic shops and micro main street, they call themselves the republic of Rosendale just cause they have that sense of community and because they can.
There really is so much to do in the Hudson Valley, and something for everyone. Lucky for you Rifton is really in the middle of it all, plus we have the only lake that isn't a reservoir so you can actually use it! If you can think of it, its up here. YUP, it's true, I Almost forgot sky diving the ranch in Gardiner :-)
We have tried to make our house as fun and relaxing as possible. Whether for a quick getaway from the city, business in our area, or a longer stay as your home away from home. I'm obviously a big fan of the region and I'm here to guide your experience as well as provide shelter during your stay, so hit me up for local intel.
Come visit, stay, have fun and while your here find a realtor you like cause... once you get a taste of what we have to offer, your gonna want to move here.
