a vacation.”a perfect family getaway”

We found our calling for a getaway purely by accident wanting to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city with our dogs. A few clicks on the website that Craig Newmark founded, we found us a nice cottage on the Esopus creek where we spent the day catching up on conversations and swimming with the dogs in between our wine therapy. At one point, we looked at each other and our happy pooches and said to each other “We should do this every weekend".

And so we did….and found “Chez Rive Gauche" a simple, warm and very inviting waterfront getaway a short 90 minute drive from NYC.

So if you dream about escaping from a busy work week to relax by the water; canoeing, kayaking, fishing, swimming, watching breathtaking sunsets and beautiful starry nights, Chez Rive Gauche is the perfect getaway for you.

“Chez", as we lovingly call it, sits on the beautiful Esopus creek and is fully furnished with global and vintage finds. This charming cottage has two bedrooms, a spacious living room and a well equipped kitchen combined with a dining room. Each of the bedrooms are outfitted with queen beds complete with organic sheets and down comforters. The mudroom leads you to the spacious outdoor deck with a dining area to enjoy views of the creek and the farm across while the sounds of the occasional train reminds you of the french countryside . Its complete with another welcoming deck right on the water plus a private dock and canoe for your exclusive enjoyment. The property is fenced in so your four legged companion will be safe but getting them away from the fun in the water is a totally different matter.

While you may not want to leave the cottage and the never ending fun “creek" side, there are a number of historic towns like Woodstock, Kingston, Saugerties and Rhinebeck within 10 miles to enjoy festivals, flea markets, restaurants, farmers markets, shopping and antiquing.

If winter sports are your thrill of choice, Hunter Mountain and Wyndham are a short drive away. Depending on the season, this 5 miles stretch of the creek freezes solid, providing an excellent opportunity to ice fish and skate if you are up for an adventure.

All of these aspects are what makes Chez Rive Gauche so unique so what are you waiting for. ….please check our website and email us for information, availability or simply to say hi.

Important considerations before making a reservation:

Our goal is to give you an unforgettable experience, we really want you to enjoy your stay as much as we have had living here.

The cottage faces the creek. The creek is deep and its something to keep in mind, when you venture into the water.

We live in the country and you might encounter an occasional spider, files, and other creatures to varying degrees. We do not use poison on the main level as we have pets

We are dog owners and the cottage is pet friendly. If you are allergic to pets, please take this into consideration. As much as we try to get every bit of fur out, there might be some fur that skipped our broom.

The cottage is fenced on three sides (fourth being the water) there might be a gap where the fence and water meet, so if you have very curious pets, its something to consider especially if the pet is left unattended.

The cottage has a septic, so please do not flush anything other than body waste and minimal tissue. I also provide organic/biodegradable shampoo, conditioner and body wash

Our cottage has town water which is safe to drink

Noises - Living on the water brings about its own set of noises. Besides the ducks quacking, the fish jumping, you will also hear the train. Towards the front of the cottage runs a goods train track. The train passes by on occasion and there is no fixed schedule. Kids love the train and some adults say it reminds them of their childhood or a french countryside. Whatever the case maybe, goods traveling by train is good for the economy and the environment. If you think the train will disturb you during your stay, our cottage might not be the right fit for you.

We also do not have a dishwasher or laundry facilities. ( a Laundromat is a five min drive away) If you are staying for more than a week, fresh linens and towels will be provided.

Once you book you will receive a simple contract/ agreement. The booking will be considered complete once I receive the signed agreement back with the names of all guests.

The cottage is within a 20 min drive to downtown Saugerties, Kingston, Rhinebeck, Red Hook and Woodstock.

Guest have free range to every aspect of the house on the first level. (no access to the basement which houses the heating units etc)

Any and all goodies stocked in the cottage are there for your enjoyment.

Here is a more comprehensive list of amenities and features that will be available to you:

Guest interaction can be tailored to your needs. Our goal is to make your stay memorable so you can always contact us via phone or email.Because we do not live in Saugerties full time, a local neighbor can help you if you have any problems that need tending to. Prior to your arrival i will email you to inform you how you can gain access to the cottage. Even though we are not always in the neighborhood, we can always be reached. Feel free to text/call/email me at any time during your stay should the unlikely event that a problem arises. We will immediately contact the proper authority to have the problem remedied.

The Neighborhood

The cottage is located on a dead end street but we do have neighbours. We love being on the water. When we are not on the water we explore all the antique shops, farmers markets, flea markets, hiking and sometimes boating in the Hudson River. The cottage is close (20-30 min drive) to downtown Saugerties, Rhinebeck, Red Hook, Woodstock and Kingston which are filled with activities and restaurants. The cottage is a 5 min drive to the grocery store, beer and wine stores.

Getting Around

We have a train that goes by, but it's a goods train.

However one can take a bus from nyc, or the train/Amtrak from Grand Central/ NY Penn. The train stop will be Rhinecliff or Poughkeepsie. But you will need a taxi or car to get to the cottage from the train station.

Once you book you will receive a simple contract/ agreement. The booking will be considered complete once I receive the signed agreement back with the names of all guests.

Dates are not held until reservation is confirmed along with a signed and initialed Rental Agreement and Pet Addendum (if applicable) is received.

About Letitia fernandes

I am a nurse, who loves animals, traveling, vintage items, ethnographic arts and crafts and food. We love dogs and have fostered many pups before they found their forever homes. We now have three dogs of our own. We love traveling and have done the four day Inca trail to Machu Picchu in Peru, climbed to the Cotopaxi volcano and travelled in the Amazon in Ecuador, participated in the carnival in Brazil, seen the Mona Lisa at the the Louvre , experienced the London eye, visited the wet markets in Hong Kong and in 2015 we visited the Thar desert and cruised the backwaters in Kerala. No fancy hotels for us as we prefer hostels and yes VRBO.

Letitia fernandes purchased this cottage in 2010

Why Letitia fernandes chose Hudson Valley

After a busy work week in the city, we always want to get a way for the weekend, so my husband and I bought a home in Saugerties. The cottage is located 1 hr 45 mins from NYC in quaint Saugerties. The cottage is simple, warm and welcoming, sits on a dead end road, where the sound of the wind, occasional fish jumping or the chugging train just as easily transports you to a french countryside.

What makes this cottage unique

We are on the water, what more can I say. We are also not more than 20-30 mins drive away from Rhinebeck, Woodstock, Kingston and downtown Saugerties.

Wonderful Weekend in the Country

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful four day weekend at Letita and Sanjay’s place. Their house is sparkling clean, and charming and comfortable. I loved the airy interior, with the French doors and paned windows.

It was a very easy drive from Manhattan and we had no trouble finding it. Letitia sent an email with all the local info we needed; we had one question and it was answered by text immediately. The Adams Fairacre Farm market, five minutes from the house, had everything we wanted -- high quality meat, fish, cheeses, produce, baked goods. Spent a lot of time on the deck drinking wine and gazing at the Esopus but also got energized enough to kayak and swim.

It gladdened my heart to see our NYC dog romp in the yard, snooze on the deck in the sun, and swim his heart out in the creek. His sad little whimpers when we drove away on Monday, told me we had to come back soon.

Charming, roomy cottage

  • 4 of 5

We three very much enjoyed our short stay in Saugerties. We felt right at home in the house, with its roomy, well-equipped kitchen, remodeled bath, large deck overlooking the private yard and broad stream. The trains came, but were far enough away that they didn't interrupt conversation. We visited several of the towns and villages in the Hudson Valley. Saugerties itself was one of our favorites, along with Hudson, Rhinebeck, Kingston, Catskill, and of course, Woodstock - we are all baby boomers, after all. Thanks to Letitia for her thoughtfulness - with the house, her directions and recommendations.

Paradise on the Esospus creek

  • 5 of 5

Letitia's home is absolutely perfect. It is bright, spacious, well decorated and there is a keen attention to detail. The location is close to downtown Saugerties, Woodstock and Kingston and it's right on the water. There is a farm across and lots of ducks wadding and squirrels and we seen a blue heron as well. The kitchen is well equipped, there were spices lots of them and lovely dishes, glasses, pots and pans. The coffee was delicious and there were three yes three different kinds of coffee makers. We enjoyed our coffee on the large deck overlooking the creek after which we went fishing. The creek is great for

Fishing and there is a canoe and a kayak as well. Letitia a great host and checked in to make sure that we had everything we needed.

We'd definitely recommend Letitia's place to our friends or anyone who wants to rent a place in the Hudson valley.

Maru the dog and his people

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Chez Rive gauche twice in August. It was just what we needed!!! We went once with another couple and our dog the first time and the second time just us and the dog. We did a little exploring the surrounding towns but honestly, there is no need to ever leave the property. It was a little slice of peace on earth. The house is full of charm and comfort and the property is PERFECT. There is nothing like being able to step out your door and take a dive in the cool clear Esophus. Honestly, I hesitate to give this such a good review because I don't want it to be all booked up for next summer. Leitita and Sanjay were so easy to work with and gracious hosts. Thank you so much, we will be back!

a wonderful getaway

  • 5 of 5

spent four nights in this lovely cottage. It was all I expected and more. I was needing some time "in the country" on water The many decorative touches were appreciated and gave us a look into the personalities of the owners. The hand carved headboard in my bedroom was impressive. The kitchen was well supplied with necessary equipment including the aromatic scents wafting from the spice drawer. The gardens and lawns were well tended. My dog loved the freedom and swimming in the Esopus. The decks provided a tranquil place for talking, reading, and sipping wine. The owner provided excellent pre occupying information re arrival and restaurants and places of interest

Location

Car: necessary

The location of the cottage is on the creek, and the front of the house, across the street is a train track. A goods train passes by on occassion and so far has not been a disturbance to either us or our guests.

Some say the sound of the train is calming, some might not like it, but if you are a light sleeper, or don't like any kind of noise, ChezRiveGauche might not be the place for you.

We are also 20-30 mins drive away from Kingston, Rhinebeck , Downtown Saugerties and Woodstock. There are great restaurants, hikes, history, flea markets, farmers markets that is if you ever want to leave the cottage.

The cottage is by the water, and while you can hear the train from anywhere we are close to the water and also close to the train tracks (front of the house) Moving freight by rail is a carbon saver and reduces highway congestion. The train does pass by, so if that is a disturbance or a deal breaker, Chez Rive Gauche might not be the right fit for you.
