This lovely, well cared for home is a welcome retreat centrally located at the southern tip of the Big Island. While spared tourist crowds, this home is easily accessible to most all sites on this amazing island. The Volcano National Park, Punaluu black sand beach and turtles, whale watching, the sweet town of Naalehu and Kae Lae (South Point) famous for it's pounding surf, and world famous Green Sands beach, are all within easy driving distance. My home is situated 50miles from Kona and 60mile from Hilo and you can travel to both sides of the island for a day on the town while experiencing the unique charm of this very special place.
My home has 3 bedrooms,2 baths, a wonderful covered lanai with nothing between you and a 180 degree ocean vista, except our large, welcoming pool. This is the perfect pied a terre for exploring this magnificent island or simply lounging in the beauty of the house or on the lanai surrounded by tropical gardens. The trade winds come through most days maintaining soft breezes and perfect temperatures. Help yourself to the papayas and bananas growing on the grounds and experience Hawaii at its' best. As well as a spacious living area and tropical landscaping, the house comes complete with washer and dryer, bikes and a grill for local fish or grass fed beef you may choose for your dinner. Local farmer's markets abound in Naalehu just 2 miles away, Volcano Village, Hilo and Kona. Discovery Harbour is in the heart of the Kau district of the Big Island, making a name for itself with internationally acclaimed coffee. You can sample Kau coffee at the Coffee Mill about 10miles away, at the local 'Flyin Hawaiian' coffee truck in Naalehu featured in Sunset magazine and at the Orchid Farm just up the road from the house on south Point Rd. The beautiful Tibetan temple in Wood Valley is just beyond the Coffee Mill and is an inspiring retreat visited by the Dalai Lama; visitors are always welcomed by the monks who care for the grounds.
If you require a connection to your real world, there is cable TV and internet connections included. Also, you'll find a great supply of board games, a Bose docking station for your favorite music and wonderful neighborhood strolls to keep you occupied.
So if you are truly in search of a place to relax and recharge, you'll want to consider this true island getaway.
Hi, I purchased this home when it was being built after falling in love with the Big island. I grew up in San Francisco and now live in Grass Valley, CA. I visit the island as often as I can and love sharing it with people.
Catherine Tantau purchased this house in 2003
I loved that this area was unspoiled; a rare thing in the islands. This home provides a natural, peaceful setting and a chance to get close to the native Hawaiian culture in a unique way as well as experience people from all over the world who have settled here. Talk to the locals; there is no end to the wonderful stories you will hear.
I fell in love with this spot because it provided me a respite from my hectic professional life and a sanctuary for my family. We've had many family gatherings here and plenty of room for our guests to relax day or night. Star gazing is amazing with no city lights to interfere with the experience. You'll have to try it at night and watch the full moon rise! There's nothing like it! The pool area and large lanai are welcoming both day and night. It's the perfect spot to watch the sunrise over the ocean and see the night sky emerge. The pool can be brisk in the winter months but is a lovely retreat after a hike or relaxing day.
With most of our group having come from -20 degrees and a foot of snow on the ground, this was absolute paradise!
The house is immaculate, spacious, comfortable, beautifully furnished, and quiet. The all inclusive kitchen made cooking easy and fun. Tropical views dazzled us everywhere, from sunrises over pool, breakfasts on lanai, beautiful landscaping, to amazing stars at night. What a sensory delight! Location is secluded yet perfect for activities/sites in Kona, Hilo, Volcanoes, and more. Having such a spacious house afforded our group plenty of room of room to sprawl, relax and recharge after all our island explorations.
We loved the local BUZZ Honey, macadamia, coffee farm with birds, orchid farm, Naalehu and its charming bakery, dining (Hana Hou & Shaka's), church, and the warm friendly locals and neighbors. We did not want to leave and hope to return soon. It was a magical vacation. Mahalo for sharing!
We absolutely loved our stay in this house! We are a family of four with two teenage boys. There was ample space and amenities, and everything was comfortable, clean, and in good working order. The back yard had a breathtaking view of the greenery and ocean in addition to a beautiful swimming pool with many nice places to sit. It's very private and quiet, ensuring a good night's sleep. Suzanne was very responsive and helpful when we had questions. We can't recommend this house highly enough!
The house is perfect! Beautiful views and a lovely pool. The kitchen was fully equipped and we couldn't have asked for a nicer place to stay. The house is close to the black sand beach and a nice little town with an amazing bakery. If you are looking for a quiet place to stay while enjoy ing a very quiet part of Hawaii, look no further. Wish we could have stayed longer!
The description on the listing was very accurate. I've stayed in a few other listings on Homeaway and this was the best for being stocked with necessities. The washer and dryer was very clean. The kitchen was well stocked with everything we needed as far as dishes and utensils. The location is perfect if you want a peaceful vacation away from the tourist spots. The owner always answered my questions very quickly. The little town of Na'alehu was a favorite place for us to visit. And, the house is just a short drive to the South Point area. I would definitely love to stay here again someday!
This house is super comfortable and easy to love. My husband and I found it extremely peaceful to sit out on the lanai and drink coffee in the morning as we watched the sun rise. The location of the property is also convenient to appreciate both Kona and Hilo, as it is situated halfway between the two towns. My husband and I agree that we made a great choice with renting this house, and we would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a place to stay on the Big Island!
This is the perfect spot to rest, relax and explore the Big Island of Hawaii. If you're looking for a retreat from the crowded condo scene you'll find this area of Ka Lae (Southoint) is one of the last pristine, undeveloped sites left in the islands. In fact, it has the longest stretch of unbroken coastline in the Hawaiian islands. Located 50 miles from Kona or Hilo you can travel to both sides of the island to visit Volcano National Park or Hilo town or visit the white sand beaches near Kona. Closer to home, this wild and open area of the US known as the Kau region, boasts a black sand (Punalu'u) and Green sand (Mahana) beach. A hike to Mahana offers a wonderful hike past the southernmost point of the US. The evening sky is so clear and full of stars it will take your breath away. You can almost see the curvature of the earth from this vantage point!
Local farmers markets abound in Naalehu, Volcano Village and Hilo. A short 15 minute drive to Pahala provides an opportunity to visit the Coffee Mill. Coffee has replaced sugar as the key agricultural product here and Kau coffee has received numerous international awards quickly overshadowing the Kona coffee the island has been known for. You can watch the coffee processing and stroll the coffee orchards as well as enjoy free coffee and local macadamia nut tasting at the Mill. Even closer to home is the Orchid Farm on South Point Road and the 'Flyin Hawaiian' airstream coffee truck in Naalehu as featured last year in Sunset magazine. Both are local gathering places featuring fresh Kau coffee. You are free to stroll through the Orchid Farm at leisure and enjoy the magnificent orchids being cultivated. You'll also want to visit the Buddhist temple just above Pahala and the Coffee Mill. It's nestled in Wood Valley on the edge of the rain forest. The small temple is a brilliant jewel. The monks who tend the grounds welcome all who come by for a visit. It's a tranquil spot for quiet meditation or a peaceful stroll. The Dalai Lama has visited this spot and you'll find some of his work featured in their small gift shop.
You won't want to miss the Volcanoes National Park about 40miles away. This is an active volcano and you can see the steam vents, hike on old lava fields, explore old native hieroglyphics and walk through ancient lava tubes. Not to be missed! Of course opportunities to watch whales, swim with dolphins at Hookena and snorkel at any number of beaches are all terrific outings.
