About the property

Sleeps 8. 3 Bedrooms. 2 Baths.

The house known as the 'Captain's Quarters' sits at the forest's edge, set back from the road and tucked into a very private estate. A four year build, (completed in 2008), it is filled with modern luxuries such as a gourmet kitchen, beautiful bluestone gas fireplace, radiant heated floors, a spa bath, air conditioning and wifi internet. Though the amenities are modern, the 'feel' of the home is steeped in an old world charm and beauty. Built with a love for the art, nothing was overlooked. From the heavy Douglas fir timbers, to the ornate cast iron radiators, much was borrowed from days gone by and re purposed here. Details in brass, marble, red wood, granite, copper, maple, limestone, and stained glass are to be found throughout.

This home was designed with friends and family in mind, and so is very social and entertains beautifully. It is truly a pleasure to experience!

The house is surrounded by gorgeous natural landscapes. White pines tower above mossy cliffs and rocky outcroppings. Wild life big and small weave through the trees. Sweeping cedars huddle and lean into each other. Colorful maples surround it all, both glowing over, and shading the acreage. There's even a pretty forest pond for the frogs and ducks, and ice skating come winter, that sits below a cozy 'lighthouse' on the bluff.

Property adjoins hundreds of acres of a diverse designated 'green spaces' that are woven with miles of walking and cross country ski trails.

This house is located in the perfect part of Duluth. While being only minutes away from Lake Superior and Downtown one way, and the malls and airport the other, there is still an absolutely enchanting feel to it all.

A well-appointed home in a beautiful location!

  • 5 of 5

The Captain's Quarters is a wonderful stay in Duluth. The owner, Doug, was welcoming, attentive to our needs, and has a unique and comfortable location within the city (yet with a backwoods country feel). We have stayed in many places in Duluth and this is definitely a favorite! Doug also knows the area and can direct your family to many parks and leisure activities!! We will definitely return!

Great stay

During a great winter weekend, the home was great for playing games, being with family and staying warm. Hard not to enjoy.

Beautiful Architecture, Wonderful Setting, Excellent Host

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed two nights at the "Captain's Quarters" and could not be more pleased with everything to do with our stay there. We arrived later in the evening but Doug, the owner and host, met us and guided us through the basics of the home he had designed and built. He stopped by the next day as well to see if we had any questions that had popped up and to give us a quick familiarization on the property, trails and nearby features that we might wander about. Everything about the house was wonderful, from the in-floor heating in some areas to the attention to detail in the woodwork and carpentry, to the plethora of songbirds and chickadees just outside of the beautiful windows. The fireplace was perfect for the cozy and comfortable living room, and bedrooms and beds were perfect after a long day of exploring Duluth and its surroundings. We will definitely stay here when we come back, and we'll recommend it to anyone thinking about a Duluth stay.

Best family getaway!!

  • 5 of 5

We spent four nights in this beautiful home and everything was simply perfect. From the comfortable bedrooms to relaxing in the tub, reading by the fire, and extensive kitchen appliances available....it made for a memorable and restoring weekend. We got quite a bit of snow on the first night and the cabin was extra cozy as a result. We will surely be back!

Amazing!

  • 5 of 5

Architectural aspects of the home are outstanding. Super clean. We had all we needed as a family of 8. Washer and dryer are a nice feature. No TV watching, it was more pleasurable to bird watch from the windows or on our hikes around the grounds. Considering we had two teenage boys, a 9 year-old boy and a 10 month old baby boy with us that says a lot! We played games at night and hiked during the day. We had wonderful morning breakfasts in a "to die for" kitchen and enjoyed gathering around the fire pit in the early evenings. Nicely appointed bathrooms. Doug, our host, greeted us with fresh roses on the kitchen island. Given it was past the middle of October, we were surprised and pleased to also be greeted by still blooming perennials outside the front door. Attention to detail bar none! We will be telling our friends about a very special place in Duluth - the Captain's Quarters!

Spectacular Home!

  • 5 of 5

If you're looking for a top notch quality home in which to stay for a few days, look no further. Top of the line finishes are used throughout this home and the layout is very conducive to visiting and entertaining. The location was close to everything we wanted to see and do in Duluth. Craftsmanship is second to none! Doug was very accommodating and hospital to my entire family. The only suggestion I can make would be for some brighter lighting in the kitchen for meal preparations. We have shared pictures of the home with friends and they as definitely interested in staying here as well. We will definitely be back to stay ourselves!
