The Luxurious 'Captain's Quarters' Is A Gorgeous Retreat, In Any Season

Bedrooms 3
Property type chateau / country house
Minimum Stay 2 - 4 nights

About the property

Sleeps 8. 3 Bedrooms. 2 Baths.

The house known as the 'Captain's Quarters' sits at the forest's edge, set back from the road and tucked into a very private estate. A four year build, (completed in 2008), it is filled with modern luxuries such as a gourmet kitchen, beautiful bluestone gas fireplace, radiant heated floors, a spa bath, air conditioning and wifi internet. Though the amenities are modern, the 'feel' of the home is steeped in an old world charm and beauty. Built with a love for the art, nothing was overlooked. From the heavy Douglas fir timbers, to the ornate cast iron radiators, much was borrowed from days gone by and re purposed here. Details in brass, marble, red wood, granite, copper, maple, limestone, and stained glass are to be found throughout.

This home was designed with friends and family in mind, and so is very social and entertains beautifully. It is truly a pleasure to experience!

The house is surrounded by gorgeous natural landscapes. White pines tower above mossy cliffs and rocky outcroppings. Wild life big and small weave through the trees. Sweeping cedars huddle and lean into each other. Colorful maples surround it all, both glowing over, and shading the acreage. There's even a pretty forest pond for the frogs and ducks, and ice skating come winter, that sits below a cozy 'lighthouse' on the bluff.

Property adjoins hundreds of acres of a diverse designated 'green spaces' that are woven with miles of walking and cross country ski trails.

This house is located in the perfect part of Duluth. While being only minutes away from Lake Superior and Downtown one way, and the malls and airport the other, there is still an absolutely enchanting feel to it all.

Lovely home

  • 5 of 5

The home is wonderfully crafted and very peaceful. The bird feeders placed around the house bring the birds in which provide sweet company. Very clean with all the amenities.

A well-appointed home in a beautiful location!

  • 5 of 5

The Captain's Quarters is a wonderful stay in Duluth. The owner, Doug, was welcoming, attentive to our needs, and has a unique and comfortable location within the city (yet with a backwoods country feel). We have stayed in many places in Duluth and this is definitely a favorite! Doug also knows the area and can direct your family to many parks and leisure activities!! We will definitely return!

Lovely "cabin" in the woods

  • 5 of 5

Our group of 6 women stayed here for 3 nights and thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful accommodations! We especially loved the heated flooring, the ease of using the fireplace and the thorough "orientation" to the property by the owner, Doug. The house is beautifully appointed and has everything you need for your home away from home: an extremely well-stocked kitchen, towels and linens, laundry and even games!

Overall we would recommend this property without reservation; however a few small details are worth noting. The beds are quite comfortable, but small. Probably full size. We knew we were not going to be sharing beds before we arrived, so we brought along our own blow-up air mattresses. I just don't see 2 people, other than kids, being comfortable sleeping together.

When coming in the front door, you are immediately in the kitchen with no mudroom or place to remove your boots, just a minor inconvenience but really, wet socks are the worst!

Doug is a gracious host and his property is beautiful. Overall we agreed it was a 9.5 out of 10!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your kind review. To clarify for any prospective guests, the two larger bedrooms each have a queen-sized bed, the smaller bedroom has a full-sized bed, and there is a roll-out full-sized bed in the TV/loft area. Thank you again for your review!

During a great winter weekend, the home was great for playing games, being with family and staying warm. Hard not to enjoy.

Beautiful Architecture, Wonderful Setting, Excellent Host

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed two nights at the "Captain's Quarters" and could not be more pleased with everything to do with our stay there. We arrived later in the evening but Doug, the owner and host, met us and guided us through the basics of the home he had designed and built. He stopped by the next day as well to see if we had any questions that had popped up and to give us a quick familiarization on the property, trails and nearby features that we might wander about. Everything about the house was wonderful, from the in-floor heating in some areas to the attention to detail in the woodwork and carpentry, to the plethora of songbirds and chickadees just outside of the beautiful windows. The fireplace was perfect for the cozy and comfortable living room, and bedrooms and beds were perfect after a long day of exploring Duluth and its surroundings. We will definitely stay here when we come back, and we'll recommend it to anyone thinking about a Duluth stay.

Best family getaway!!

  • 5 of 5

We spent four nights in this beautiful home and everything was simply perfect. From the comfortable bedrooms to relaxing in the tub, reading by the fire, and extensive kitchen appliances available....it made for a memorable and restoring weekend. We got quite a bit of snow on the first night and the cabin was extra cozy as a result. We will surely be back!
