One of New England's best kept secrets, the Dartmouth-Lake Sunapee region is two hours north of Boston, but a world away from its big-city crowds. Now you can explore the perfect location -- from our private home. Nestle in the woods and enjoy toasty fires, seasonal lake views and a good book from our library, or take advantage of the many recreational and tourist opportunities that are offered year-round. In summer, swimming, golfing, boating, hiking and paddle-boarding are all available, both at Eastman and in the surrounding area. In winter, enjoy Eastman's extensive trail system with your cross-country skis, our snow-shoes, or take a short drive to the nearby downhill ski resorts and schuss to your heart's content.
Foodies will enjoy cooking in the recently remodeled kitchen with Boos butcher-block island, gas range and convection oven, or step outside and grill on large Weber propane grill. A Bosch dishwasher makes cleanup easy and quiet.
The open floor plan lends itself to casual entertaining while still providing quiet spots in the upstairs loft or main floor office. Three levels of living space, each with a bedroom and bath, mean that couples or families are equally at home. The downstairs family room is set up to accommodate cinephiles, with our collection of Blu-ray movies, cable service and DVR, and an oversized HD flat-screen TV with sound system.
A gas fireplace on the main level is remote-controlled; those seeking a more rustic experience can use the wood stove in the lower level and keep things toasty with our abundant supply of seasoned wood. Of course the entire home is heated, and central air is available for warm summer months as well! The screened porch is the perfect spot for summer barbecues or naps in the hammock, while the lower flagstone patio and picnic table offer an alternative shady spot to gather for board games or snacks.
A large-capacity washer and dryer are conveniently located on the main floor, making it easy to pack light. All beds are made with high-thread-count sheets, goose-down duvets, and an assortment of cozy pillows.
Bedrooms offer ample closet and dresser space for longer stays. The master suite has a king bed, double vanity, large shower, heated bathroom floor and walk-in closet. The bedroom on the main level has a queen bed and easy access to the hall bath with a tub/shower combo. The lower level bedroom is oversized, with a king bed, and the nearby bonus room has a fold-out queen sofa with memory-foam topper as well as a full-sized crib with organic mattress. The compact lower level bath has a single vanity and small shower.
Complementary internet is accessible throughout the home via Wifi, and a printer is located in the office. A land line with free local calls is installed, and you can stay in touch with the outside world via long distance for $.05/minute while still getting away from it all.
Our home is located on over two acres and includes the lakefront, providing a great workout to those hardy souls who wish to walk up from the lake on our winding (and steep!) private trail. Less ambitious guests can enjoy wildlife and Eastman Lake from the two large decks. During the summer months, walk down to the swimming beaches or head over to South Cove to rent a paddleboard or kayaks and explore the lake from the water.
The use of some Eastman amenities such as the gym, indoor heated pool and beaches/playgrounds are included at no extra charge; others are available for a reasonable fee. Horse-back riding, summer day camps, and other seasonal recreational activities are available nearby; just ask us for recommendations!
Additional amenities you didn't know you needed: Our automatic generator ensures that storms will cause minimal inconvenience* during your stay. An attached two-car garage with remote opener provides security for your recreational toys and shelter for your vehicle. The Dartmouth Coach provides convenient and luxurious service to Boston-Logan airport and to New York City. Car rentals are available locally or at Manchester, Lebanon and Boston airports. We are pleased to provide a list of other reliable vendors (car service, catering, babysitting, farmer's markets, shopping) upon request.
Doug and Deb Merrill: We've been married for 15 years and have launched three daughters into the world. Although we spend as much time with them as possible, we are empty-nesters, enjoying our pets, travel, our extended family and dear friends around the country during our vacations. We currently reside in Irvine, CA on the west coast, but we will continue to come back to New England to enjoy the history, the architecture, the food, the fall colors, the snow in winter and especially our friends. We found that living in New England gave us access to so many opportunities to explore -- north to Quebec City and Montreal, along the coast from the foodie haven of Portland, ME to the city lights of NYC. We love historic Boston, MA and funky Burlington, VT and every place in between and highly recommend a visit to the area.
Doug and Deborah Merrill purchased this house in 2010
Are you looking for a home away from home? Because this is our home, it has many of the conveniences you enjoy. Until recently, we lived here full-time, and the amenities available to you reflect that. High-speed internet, a two-car garage with opener, quality furnishings and bedding, a functional office -- these are the little things that make a house a home. We fell in love with the Upper Valley and with Eastman because of its setting, and bought our home here because we enjoyed living in the trees so much. A career move has made our home your next vacation retreat, or possibly your next home -- who knows?! Either way, we hope you will enjoy it as much as we have. Don't hesitate to contact us for more information and we will respond promptly!
Not too big, not too small. Not too grand, not too plain. Enjoy our small lake or the larger lakeside resorts nearby. You can stay within a 5 mile radius or use our home as a home base for wide-ranging travels while you explore all of New England and beyond. We welcome travelers from abroad and would love to help you with your travel plans in our area!
We stayed for four days in August with our yellow lab. She's ten and we weren't sure if she would handle the hike to the lake with her legs not being the best anymore, but she was like a puppy every morning sprinting down the hill and into the water. She had a great time. We enjoyed cooking in the well stocked kitchen, going to the beach, and hanging out with family. We took a day trip to Sugarbush Farm in Vermont, tasted great cheese and maple syrup, and walked the maple hike and saw the farm animals. It was about forty minutes away, and was a trip we recommend, if only to stock up on some great cheese and syrup. We felt at home here, as the house has all the comforts of being home, from comfortable beds and couches, to wine glasses ready to go. We enjoyed visiting the beautiful Eastman area.
My husband and I spent 10 days in the Merrill's beautiful home at Eastman and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Our adult children and friends visited throughout our stay. The home is accurately depicted on VRBO and Deborah responded to any questions quickly. It was clean, functional and light filled with many welcoming amenities including comfortable beds, plenty of hangers in the closets and dozens of dvds. The porch is a fantastic place for enjoying meals and napping on the hammock. The cast iron griddle on the stove makes awesome pancakes too! One suggestion is to bring a radio or blue tooth speaker for music to use in main living areas. The property is on a steep slope so we put our kayaks in at the South Cove boat launch and beached them at the shoreline of the property. We tied a bandana to a tree so we knew the house location. There is a cleared path up to the house but would recommend using shoes with a tread. The large path at the shoreline is 10 -15 minute walk to West Cove Beach or the South Cove Beach/Activity Center which is convenient for swimming. In addition to kayaking, we played golf and tennis, all within Eastman. We also hiked the Quechee Gorge, visited Simon Pearce in Quechee VT and Sugarbush Cheese and Maple Farm in Woodstock, VT. Eastman is a terrific place to spent a vacation and Deborah and Doug's lovely home makes the visit that much more special.
My husband, daughter and 2 granddaughters spent one week in this wonderful home. It was so well equipped, clean, tastefully decorated and a truly peaceful retreat. We only wish we could have spent more time there as we were out of the house most of the time preparing for our other daughters wedding in New London the following weekend.
We were able to have a couple of nice family dinners there and enjoyed the screened in porch and well equipped kitchen.
My only regret is that we did not book it for two weeks. It would have been a nice place to relax after all the wedding activities.
Thank you Merrill's for sharing your beautiful home!
My husband, son, daughter and I had two magical weekends at the Merrill's this summer! Our precious family time was even more wonderful with all the special touches in this beautiful home- we love Eastman and staying in a truly lovely house with absolutely everything we could want was a bonus! We swam, kayaked, sat on the beach, hiked, played golf, enjoyed the restraunt- My favorite part? Sitting on the deck with gorgeous flower boxes and spectacular view and my cup of coffee/glass of wine!
Thank you Deb and Doug,
Warm regards, Pat
We rented the Merrill home for the Thanksgiving holiday and we could not have been more pleased. The home is beautiful and has all the amenities you could ever want. For us, with a 2-year old granddaughter, the added bonus was having a crib (with wonderful bedding), baby monitor, booster seat, books/toys available for our use. The setting of the home is gorgeous and the owners could not be more accommodating--Deb replaced a missing roasting pan before we arrived to be sure we could roast our Thanksgiving turkey! We definitely recommend this home to other travelers and will rent again ourselves on our next trip to NH.
This was a great place to get away with our adult kids! The house is beautiful and well kept. everthing we needed was right there. Views of the lake were amazing and the staff at the recreation center were nice and extremely helpful. I would have preferred easier access to the lake from the house, but it was quick and easy to use the beach.

Eastman has its own course and driving range, but other courses surround the area as well. Food and cinema can be enjoyed in our home or at one of the many nearby theaters.
Truly, it's hard to think of something we don't have nearby, and that goes for children's activities too. So please ask, and we will be happy to make recommendations tailored to your party's age range and interests.
