The restored Bergerie, still with its attractive exposed stone-work and roof timbers, has a floor area of approx. 50m². It also has a four-poster bed and the added advantage of children's beds in a second (loft) bedroom. Like the first unit, it is totally self-contained. It offers a terrace and barbecue area.

About the property

Le Mas du Savel

Le Savel is a 17th century stone farmhouse with various outbuildings which were used for chestnut-drying and silk-worm rearing, the main activities along with grapes and olives until about fifty years ago. The setting of Le Savel is exceptional. At 350 metres altitude and in absolute tranquillity the property has an uninterrupted panorama to the south of the Chassezac and the hills and mountains beyond its terraced land descending steeply through vines and olive trees, pine-woods and heather to a little stream. There is a swimming pool (11 x 5m) and organic produce generally available. There are two totally self-contained apartments, each with a four-poster bed, terrace, barbecue area and hammock. The one-bedroom apartment now has a comfortable 140 x 190cm sofa-bed in the sitting room. The Bergerie has a second children's bedroom. Each has a floor area of approximately 50 m² and a wood-burning stove for winter warmth. Towels and bed linen are provided.

Beautiful hideaway in the french hills.

The location of the bergerie and the surrounding building is glorious. It overlooks a valley and a river and is surrounded by vineyards, olive orchards, and pristine forests. There are numerous hiking paths just a stone's throw from your front door and the property itself is gorgeous. Brodie and Diane are wonderful and welcoming and they have done an amazing job in restoring the house and it's property; surrounded by slopes of native plant-life and wild flowers, it's a perfect escape. the swimming pool is the cherry on the cake! It's a saltwater pool - which means great for the environment (no chemicals) and great for retaining heat; the pool is keep impeccably clean and maintained.

The lodging in the bergerie is full of charm and taste. It's well renovated with all the basic comforts of home.

Les Vans is the closest village at about a 15 minute drive from Le Savel and has everything you need to complete a vacation stay (markets, stores, restaurants, cafes, etc.). Further on and easily accessible is the wine region of the Ardeche.

We plan to come back often - it's perfect.

A most exceptional location

Douglas and Allison are right. The situation of the house is outstanding, perched on the edge of the valley above the kites and falcons, one can easily spend all day reading, drawing, writing, relaxing, chatting, swimming in the wonderful pool, or just staring at the amazing view. The situation is tranquil; the atmosphere relaxing. You could spend a week walking the trails and randonnées from the house, through forest, waterfalls, deserted houses, down to the Chassezac river without ever needing a car. And Les Vans is a surprise - a vibrant, thriving market town which has something for everyone.

We have been coming to France for over 30 years, and stayed in some spectacular places and houses, but it was our first time stopping for two weeks in the Ardeche. If you like 'Undiscovered France' this area is perfect for majestic gorges, gallo roman towns, markets, local produce and some fine wines that never make it to the UK. Le Savel suited us down to the ground. Brodie and Diana are indeed the perfect hosts. We shall be back again next year.

Simply Stunning!

Our last trip was our fifth visit to Le Savel ... and we think it's simply stunning. Each time we've taken the one-bedroom apartment but this description hardly does it justice - just look at the photos. It's very beautiful, very comfortable and very French!

The situation of the house is outstanding and the views are breath-taking. You can begin the day with a swim in the pool; drive to Les Vans for a paper and croissants; and spend the rest of the day relaxing in the garden; reading in the hammock under an ancient mulberry tree; taking any number of walks from the house; dipping in the pool or in the river; or sightseeing around the Ardeche.

The garden is beautifully shaded - and you will enjoy this in the summer. We've also been to Le Savel out of season, when the mornings are sharp and fresh, you can be the only people at Le Pont d'Arc (!), and you can spend the evening around the wood burning stove.

Les Vans is a pretty old town with welcoming cafes, some good restaurants, easy parking and a bustling market. It is, however, a drive away and while some guests do cycle there, it's a long hard pull back uphill!

Brodie and Diana are perfect hosts and we'd certainly recommend Le Savel to anyone looking for a relaxing holiday, deep in the French countryside. That's why we've been there five times!

Merveilleux !

Un endroit pittoresque et bucolique dans un cadre grandiose ! Depaysement et isolement garantie ! La bergerie est très joliment décorée et bien équipée (avec notamment de l'huile d'olive du domaine et plein d'épices). Diana est une personne délicieuse qui nous a grandement facilité vie.

Traumhafter Urlaub

Wir hatten eine wundervolle Zeit in Le Savel und wären so gerne noch da geblieben. Wir waren zum zweiten Mal dort und hatten dieses Mal beide Häuser gemietet, was uns sehr viel Raum und Bewegungsfreiheit zu viert gegeben hat. Beide Häuser sind ganz besonders mit viel Charakter und schönem Ambiente, alles sehr liebevoll gemacht und es fehlt an nichts. Ich kenne keinen Ort, der eine so traumhafte Lage, so einen tollen Blick und eine so herrliche Natur bietet. Besonders gefreut hat uns, dass es warm genug wurde und wir auch den Pool nutzen konnten. Wir freuen uns schon sehr auf unseren nächsten Besuch und ein Wiedersehen mit den herzlichen Vermietern. Sie machen Le Savel zu diesem besonderen Ort.

Le Savel- ein magischer Ort

Le Savel-ein magischer Ort...

Typisch Ardeche, etwas Cevennen und ganz französisch. Das graue Gemäuer, schiefergedeckt, birgt Geheimnisse vieler Generationen. Ausgetretene Stufen zeugen von regem Leben, jeder Winkel erzählt Geschichten. Der Garten, üppig und gepflegt, ursprünglich und wild, ist so gegensätzlich wie die Landschaft, die ihn umgibt: tiefe Täler, wilde Schluchten, unbegradigte Flüsse, Stromschnellen, Kastanien- und Pinienwälder, Weinberge und Obstgärten.

Diana und Brodie ist es gelungen, ein Idyll zu schaffen, gewachsene bauliche und landwirtschaftliche Strukturen zu bewahren. Appartement und Ferienhaus sind komfortabel, von Brodie selbst geschaffene Möbel und Dianas geschickte Raumausstattung und Dekoration wirken harmonisch; eine gelungene Mischung aus englischem Landhausstil und provenzialischer Einrichtung.

Der Pool, umgeben von weißem und rosafarbenem Oleander, liegt über den Rebterrassen und bietet einen atemberaubenden Blick über das Tal des Chassezac auf den gegenüberliegenden Bergkamm.

Die Gastgeber, Diana und Brodie, sind überaus liebenswürdig, offen und weltläufig, dem Gast zugewandt und, falls möglich, erfüllen sie jeden Wunsch. Vor allem die Herzlichkeit der beiden erzeugt das Gefühl, Le Savel zu besuchen ist wie nach Hause zu kommen.

Zwei Haikus, von mir verfasst auf unserem Freisitz unter dem Maulbeerbaum mit Blick auf die Felsformation, die Le Savel im Norden begrenzt, können vielleicht eine Ahnung vermitteln von dem Zauber dieses Ortes:

We are 70 km southwest of Loriol, the auto route du Soleil exit that we normally use. But less busy and more picturesque is the auto route to Bourges and Clermond-Ferrand. Within a southerly arc of about 100 km from Les Vans lie Avignon, Nîmes, Arles and Montpellier. The Sud-Ardèche is the northerly limit of the Mediterranean climate with its olive trees, evergreen oaks and maritime pines. Les Vans is a typically friendly southern town with a lively Saturday market, where during the quieter winter months one is just as likely to hear patois spoken in the bars and cafés as French. They play boules all evenings and nurture family feuds with Mediterranean zeal. We are a twelve minute drive from there.We have an excellent wood-turning centre nearby offering short courses and also,at Le Savel the use of a fully equipped workshop for practice sessions
