About this property

House with character in Amsterdamse School architecture

The ‘Atelier’ was built in the 1930s in the Amsterdam School architectural style. The movement’s aim was to create unity and vision to its built environment; both in the exterior and the interior of the building. The structures are characterized by decorative soft red brick stone-work, window treatments and corner towers or spires.

Ideally located in the hamlet of Westenschouwen ‘The Atelier’ is 550 meters from the beach and 3km from the centre of Haamstede

The house has three bedrooms; a small single bedroom downstairs, upstairs off the landing is a small single (both with 80 x 190 cm beds) and further up is the double bedroom with a Euro king bed (180 x 200 cm). There are washbasins in each room and a separate shower room on the landing and the WC is downstairs.

The living room has cable TV, and the study a fireplace. There is a fully equipped kitchen and a separate dining room that opens up to a private terrace with garden furniture and a pond, perfect for the long summer evenings with the sun in the NW.

There is also a dishwasher, washing machine and dryer.

A small front garden shared with the separate ‘voorhuis’; a C19th semidetached farmhand cottage with original bedstede and 18c Delft tiles.

Kaffeemaschine, Kapselautomat, Toaster, Wasserkocher, Mikrowelle, Fön, TV, Staubsauger - alles da! Ein sehr originelles Schmuckstück! Wir sind begeistert!

Sehr angenehmer Aufenthalt

About the host

My grandparents loved the peace and nature on Schouwen-Duiveland and bought one of the semi-detached houses used as a 'worker's cottage' from the local farmer in 1920. This property has been a family holiday home for 100 years.

Why they chose this property

During the Great Depression in the Netherlands, between 1933 and 1936, my father built the Atelier with his brother Ir. F.C.J. Dingemans who was an architect and urban planner for Maastricht.

Within the family, it was always said to be a ‘model’ for a beautiful stately home “Schouwenburgh” built in 1938 on the edge of the dunes in nearby Burg and now a national monument.

Several other of my uncle F.C.J. Dingemans' buildings are listed; including the ‘Gemeenteflat’ at Koningsplein in Maastricht. This was the city’s first high-rise building built in the years 1948-1950 in a time of great housing shortage and still considered a striking building with great architectural value.

What makes this property unique

The Atelier was built in differently profiled red brick as my uncle was partial to the brick’s clean lines and simple ability to convey weight, mass and form.

The house was my grandmother's (H.L. Dingemans-Numans) studio and later my father’s (W.J. Dingemans Jr). After 1991 it has been our holiday home and still contains a lot of the original features and furniture made especially for the Atelier.

The Atelier has seen a lot of happy times in the last 85-years, and we hope to share some of the uniqueness of the building with you.
