About the property

log cabin with wood stove heat or central air with views of the mountains

The Madison is an original log cabin refurbished recently with a wood stove with surrounding gardens with views of the Blue Ridge mountains. The cabin has central heat and air with antique furnishings. The Jefferson is a newly restored log cabin that is connected via a breezeway to the Madison. This would be perfect for family or friends to share. The cabin is only 15 minutes from Charlottesville and the University of Virginia. The gardens were featured in the historic Albemarle county garden tour in 2010.

About Byrd Leavell

I am a working physician who enjoys gardening and farming .

Byrd Leavell purchased this cabin in 1982

Why Byrd Leavell chose Central Virginia

This cabin has been renovated with modern amenities with antique furnishings. Wonderful views of the mountains and so close to Charlottesville or the nearby wineries and breweries

What makes this cabin unique

I love being so near nature with dear in the field , wild turkeys , or foxes seen. One may hear the owls at night or the sound of the gobble of the turkey in the spring. The view is most enjoyable and it is off the beaten path.

Cozy and Comfortable

  • 4 of 5

Staying at the Madison was perfect for my two girlfriends and I during our weekend trip to Charlottesville. It's a pretty quick drive from downtown (about 15 minutes), but feels very secluded and remote. The location was perfect for us because it was between downtown and neighboring wineries/hiking trails. The cabin is definitely a very modest size, basically one room sectioned into bed, living, and dining room areas by the furniture arrangement. Two of us shared the queen bed, and one slept on the pull out couch, all of which were very comfortable. The place was clean, and very cute, bucolic. Upon arrival, Byrd greeted us and was very friendly. He provided the cabin with fruit, sweet breads, snacks, and coffee/juice, which was great. The fact that it was bordering some of their pastures for cows/donkeys/chickens/etc., was also a really sweet touch (and no animal smells!) The wifi worked well, which was also very helpful. The only sink is the bathroom sink though, so a little hard to wash dishes (and no dish soap/sponges). I think the only thing that could potentially create an odd situation, is that the other cabin they rent out is immediately next to the Madison, and they actually share a little porch area. Since the land plot is so small, it could feel like you want a little more privacy (especially if you don't get along with your neighbors), but when we were there it was fine, and there were no sound distribution issues. That said, I would definitely come stay here again, it was a very comfortable getaway!

This property is a must see! Spot on for the description. The owner was very nice and greeted upon arrival. The cabin was furnished with old antiques and a wood stove. The owner had the cabin stocked with coffee, snacks, fruits, pastries, and drinks. Perfect location to everything. Sightseeing at Monticello was a quick 15 min ride. Cozart the next town over was a 10 min zip. Byrd was very helpful with directions and dinner suggestions. The property is beautiful; nestled on a cattle farm surrounded by the blue ridge mountains. Sad the trip had to end but already planning a trip back!
