Swimming access to a gorgeous reef
Walk/wade into the water through a patch of dense sea grass, then swim straight to renowned Spooky Channel Reef, where some of nature’s most unique creatures, like parrotfish and crab, swim against a Technicolor backdrop of the coral reef.
The house and Gazebo is protected by a 24 hour Security system by Bulldog Security, providing response to the alarm system and regular patrols.
WHY I LOVE IT HERE– AND YOU WILL, TOO!
This seafront property in Sandy Bay—between Coxen Hole and West End—was once part of my great-grandfather's farm. I spent a sunny, wonderful childhood here along the shore, gathering mangoes, avocadoes, and cashew seeds from the trees and swimming to Spooky Channel Reef, a famous diving and snorkeling spot.
And as our guests, you can do the same today!
Walk out onto the property and pluck a juicy mango (when in season) from the cluster of fruit trees. Then put on your snorkeling gear and head into the water to explore Spooky Channel Reef. After a short walk/wade through some sea grass, you'll find crystal clear water and a spectacular reef ecosystem populated with large parrotfish, grouper, crabs and other bright aquatic life.
West Bay tourists often pay good money to be boated here for dive tours—but you have all its beauty right in your backyard!
This property means a lot to me. It was passed down from generation to generation, and much of the land still belongs to our family. The Roatan Beach House is my retirement dream home, built in 2002.
But in the meantime, I want to share the beauty of this place with others!
Thank You for visiting my site.
I was born and raised in Sandy Bay, on this very property, until my family migrated to New York, where I work until after 911.
I now live and work in Sunny Florida, hoping one day to retire and move back to my childhood town of Sandy Bay.
I will love for you to come and visit and create some wonderful memories of your own.
kelly Mccray purchased this house in 2002
This property means a lot to me as I spent many sunny wonderful days here as a child, along the shores and plucking all different kind of fruits. This property was part of my great-grandfather's farm and most of the property still remains in the family after generations.
This house is on the beach and a short swim to the reef, where you can snorkel famous Spooky Channel right in front of house.
House is away from the touristy and cruise ship crowd, but, minutes away by Taxi or car to West End or West Bay.
Come and enjoy all the beauty of Roatan and the hospitality of living among the locals, and I hope that you will want to come back again.
We spent a week in the top unit which is completely separate from downstairs, totally private. Have no concerns about sharing a house, think of it more as a townhouse. The property was clean and as advertised, good for 2-4 people. Both bedrooms were comfortable with well functioning air conditioners while windows provide for an ocean breeze. The kitchen was fully equipped and the bathrooms were large enough with plenty of hot water. Located about half way between Coxen Hole and West End the house really isn't walking distance to anything. There are a few good restaurants within a couple miles and the closest supermarkets are in Coxen Hole (large, preferable) and West End (limited and more expensive). We rented a car but taxis can be hailed from the main road. The house is not isolate, other houses are close by but sound was not a problem. I would stay here again.
This is a great house to rent. We stayed on the upper level and spent much of our time outside on the large porch (veranda) overlooking the ocean, beautiful sunsets. The inside of the house is bigger than it looks in the pictures and is very comfortable. The kitchen is well equipped with charming, tropical views out the window over the sink making dishwashing enjoyable. The two bathrooms are large with ample hot water and the beds are very comfortable.
Homer, Kelly's cousin was very helpful as well as Syria, Kelly's cousin who lives next door. Syria and her fiancee picked us up at Paya Bay resort, which is at the other end of the island, and gave us a cool tour on our way to the house. Thanks, you guys are great!
We snorkeled on the reef which you can see from the porch. The shallow water right off the beach is difficult to get through with all the grass and soft bottom but a neighbor gave us a great tip of swimming out through the shallow water along the side of a neighboring dock. Here the bottom is sandy, it was much nicer and one doesn't have to worry about trampling on aquatic life. There are windows on all sides of the house so the breezes can flow but if it gets too hot each bedroom has good, quiet air conditioning. We experienced only one rainy afternoon /evening and were surprised by great television service on the large TV. Overall this was a charming house in a real neighborhood Roatan style.
We stayed on the second level and the views were just beautiful. The owner Kelly was on top of everything and was great with communication. The property manager, Homer was very attentive to our needs and even had a bottle of wine and a banner made, wishing us a Happy Anniversary! So unexpected and very appreciated. Thank you so much!!
Kelly's cousin, Homer, picked us up at the airport and took us to buy groceries when we first arrived. He was a wonderful resource of information and was very helpful with any questions. While at the house we spent mist of our time on the veranda facing the water, and we were right on the water. We gad coffee and breakfast on the veranda in the morning and drinks later in the day watching the sunset. We could snorkel right off the edge of the property after wading through a shallow area of turtle grass. Once when snorkeling in the shallow area (as opposed to wading through it) a large spotted eagle Ray swam by, close enough to touch. We could walk out to the main road to catch a cab to wherever we wanted to go and we were close enough to walk to Anthony's Key Resort to arrange snorkeling excursions or a dolphin swim. We felt safe while there. Very quiet nights, which has not always been our experience in other Central and South American countries. Kelly was wonderful to work with. We would definitely stay again and recommend this to others. This is the perfect place to stay if you were going to stay fir longer periods of time. The place looked like the pictures, the house was clean, and even beach towels were provided. It was a wonderful stay!
I had several email exchanges with the owner over the course of a month trying to plan a trip with my husband and parents. Unfortuantely, we were not able to make it due to a health issue, however, given the excellent communication, attention to detail, and willingness to help that Kelly showed during each of our written exchanges, I have no doubt this would have been reflected in the property itself. My husband and I are avid snorkelers and I had done alot of research into places to stay on the island and can't imagine this location can be beat for price and convenience. We will definitely make new plans to stay there very soon!
