Beautiful property inside and out.

This is an extraordinarily nice home surrounded by beautiful southern Illinois forest. Our stay there this past weekend was perfect and there wasn't one thing that was lacking. Probably the cleanest vacation rental I have ever stayed in and we so appreciated all the small details and touches that made our family get-together (six adults) so enjoyable. Hardest part was deciding which deck or balcony to sit on with my morning coffee and take in all the beautiful scenery! In the front there was the gorgeous sunrise and in the back there were the trees and rocks. Ended up doing both and then hiking up the hill behind the house to sit on a giant rock in the woods. This is a stunning property. Thank you for sharing it.

Awesome house with amazing views

  • 5 of 5

This is our second time staying at Rocky Ridge and we will definitely be back. After a day of hiking or touring the wine trail, we loved coming back to the house to cook our dinner on the grill and enjoy the sunset on the deck. The house is beautifully decorated, very homey and has a perfect layout for two couples. Mary was also very responsive and accommodating before and throughout our stay. We would highly recommend you stay at this house on your next visit to Southern Illinois. You will not be disappointed!!

So much better than the pictures!

  • 5 of 5

We were a seasoned group of travelers that have been coming to the area for about 8 years annually and Rock Ridge Cabin is by far our favorite and we will return here to stay every time! The location is in a perfectly secluded area with absolutely breathtaking views. There wasn't one thing lacking and everything advertised was true and reliable. Except for the pictures....the pictures didn't do it justice!! We can't wait for another stay at Rock Ridge.

Absolutely loved the place. Would most definitely come back here again. The master bedroom/loft area was great with a huge bathroom area. The kitchen has everything you need to prepare meals. Two more bedrooms and a full bath are downstairs with a living area and slider leading to a patio. Half bath on ground floor large kitchen dining area and a back entry with full laundry. Full deck off living room on first floor that was perfect for sitting out and having coffee or drinks and watching the fireworks with the 40 mile view. Look forward to coming back.

Beautiful home!!!

  • 4 of 5

This was such a beautiful location & very nice home. We really enjoyed our stay! The location shown on the aerial map thru VRBO, however, is wrong. The actual location is 1.7 miles NW along the same road. If you depend on GPS while you're in the area, please do not use the home address, that will be provided to you, as none of the map applications can seem to locate the address that will be given & that is posted along the road by the mailbox. This caused us much stress when trying to navigate back to the house one night after dark.

Other than that, we had a wonderful time during our stay. Explored a few different areas within Shawnee National Forest--you must see Garden of the Gods!!! It's about an hour & 15 min NE of the home. We also visited some wineries & Bald Knob Cross. Such a beautiful area! Doesn't even seem like you're in Illinois!

Mary was very helpful in getting us acquainted with the area & home. She leaves you with a nice map of the area west of the home that shows the wineries & local towns and tells you where the good restaurants are! :) I definitely recommend you stay here. I would have given the home 5 stars if we wouldn't have had the GPS problems & an issue with the grill.

Thanks again!!

Rock Ridge is located in the heart of the Shawnee National Forest located on 140 acres. The backdrop at our home is a line of bluffs that can be seen from miles away. You can spend hours in your own backyard or get out and explore Giant City and Ferne Clyffe State Parks, LaRue Pine Hills, Trail of Tears State Forest and Crab Orchard Wildlife Refuge. They are just the tip of the iceburg for those who love the outdoors. Tunnel Hill Bike Trail is a destination spot for those who love to ride.

There is World Class bird and deer hunting, along with some of the best fishing the Midwest has to offer. We offer a stocked pond here on the property. We are also conveniently located to the Shawnee Wine Trail which boats a dozen Award winning wineries just minutes away. There are antique stores and other hometown shops, lots of local eateries and annual events such as Vulture Fest in Makanda, the Superman competition in Metropolis and the Apple Festival in Murphysboro.

Rock Ridge is just a short drive from Southern Illinois University Carbondale and would be a great place for those family weekends or graduation!

Most would agree that the star of the show in Southern Illinois is our beloved Bald Knob Cross of Peace in Alto Pass. It is the tallest Cross in the Western Hemisphere standing at an impressive 111 feet tall at an elevation of 1000 feet with sweeping views of The Shawnee National Forest and everything beyond! It is awe inspiring and by far worth the short drive. Be sure and catch the short 6 minute video in the Visitors Center that explains how the Cross came to be, what happened and how the recent $500,000.00 renovation came to be!

Southern Illinois is also famous for its harvest of peaches and apples! Flamms Orchards in Cobden has a treat that can't be beat! A strawberry razzle!!! If you don't get a large you will be angry.....if you like blizzards, you will LOVE the razzle!

There are 1,000 year old Cypress Trees to see just down the road in Cypress. The Visitor Center has displays of local wildlife and the helpful staff can direct you to see these marvels of nature.....

There are so many things to see and do in our part of the Country. Please check back for updates to this post as we will be adding more things to see and do shortly! Make sure you put us on your list of places to stay....We promise you will be back, you will love it!
