Set within the Loire valley Nature park, this area has recently been included on UNESCO's world patrimony list to preserve the spectacular scenery along 180 miles of the Loire, the last wild river in Europe. The Loire valley is famous for its many chateaux where kings and their courts built an impressive array of stately homes ranging from medieval times through every period and style to the second empire in the mid 19th Century. This area is also known for its wine: Chinon, Bourgeuil or the rich, sweet wine of Coteau du Layon or the sparklings of Saumur. 'Le Cadre Noir', the classical academic riding school is based in Saumur (8 miles away) and gives gala evenings from April to October. The 'Futureoscope of Poitiers' is only few hours drive away. So come and enjoy!

Steven Guderian purchased this chateau / country house in 2001
We purchased our vacation home ! Having come to France for years, to Champfreau, we eventually purchased the home and upgraded it to a lavish holiday home.
Dinners by Chef Bruce Riedner from NYC are available, we are on 17 hectares (53 acres) of organic land. It is serene and beautiful.
Dear Bruce & Steven,
Our warmest gratitude to you for sharing with us the magic of your fantastic estate & a glimpse of your life. You are the most charming, considerate and generous hosts; you made us feel right at home immediately upon our arrival and so comfortable and welcome throughout the week. Thank you for that !
The Manoir is an absolute treasure, and it has been a true treat for us to learn the story of your shaping it to its present glory. We will particularly treasure the memory of being pampered by you with Bruce's fantastic cooking - asparagus a la Bruce & confit de canard warmly recommended ! - and Steve's delicious deserts. Good food, great atmosphere !
The week has gone too fast & thus we are making plans to return, as such treat just demands an Encore !
With warm thanks,
Britt & Mats, Paula & Anders
My husband and I struggled over where to stay during our short tour around the Loire Valley. We ultimately chose Steve and Bruce's country home and felt we absolutely lucked out. The grounds are just spectacular. You are out in the country so i's just so relaxing! Sitting outside with a glass of wine (which they very kindly furnished along with other wonderful treats) in the afternoon was perfect; they both joined us, as well, which was awesome.
The interior of the country home is decorated like out of a Ralph Lauren home, as another guest said. It's filled with trinkets and artifacts in every corner. The colors are soothing and rich. I know they bought the best paint from London, of course! Everything is available. The home is spacious! We expected a room or an apartment--we got a house with bedroom, living room (with piano and thousands of books) with enormous fireplace, dining room, kitchen and little reception area. That's not to mention the outside area.
This is a one of kind place that you feel so lucky to fall over. We will definitely return for a longer stay. Bruce and Steven were extremely helpful and so very friendly. Don't hesitate. BOOK IT!!
As I write this I am curled up on the sofa in the Maison (the smaller of the two properties), the fire is crackling and I REALLY REALLY do not want to leave tomorrow! The hosts, Steven and Bruce are charming, as my husband and I are here to celebrate our anniversary they prepared and served a wonderful meal for us last night, champagne and canapés by the fire followed by a 4 course meal in the dining room, paired with regional wines and finally a selection of liqueurs and chocolate to go with coffee to round things off.
The Maison is stunningly well put together. It dates back to the early 1400's and has been superbly restored throughout. We have a very well equipped kitchen, a rather grand dining room, a fabulous drawing room with huge working fireplace, floor to ceiling bookshelves, rugs strewn on the floor, numerous table lamps, and candles... and a baby grand in the corner! Whilst it looks magazine-shoot ready it is incredibly comfortable to live in. The bedroom is intimate and romantic with an ensuite leading off it.
Steven and Bruce also very kindly showed us round the Manoir today, a larger property with 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. Again it's stunning. These guys have a great eye for design as well as knowing exactly how to put their guests at ease.
Honestly I cannot say enough good things and cannot think of even one area where there is room for improvement. Steven and Bruce, you are doing a wonderful job and have made my husband and I very happy. Thank you!
My wife and I stayed here 5 days in Jan/Feb. Heating for this time of the year was excellent in the 5 rooms plus bath (about 1500-2000 square feet) Richard Louis. Nice operational fireplace in the living room with wood provided. I think I can best describe the decor/feel as right out of a "Ralph Lauren" photo shoot. My wife and I have stayed at maybe 25 period European properties and without a doubt this was the most authentic and most comfortable. The kitchen is better equipped than at our home. The sourroundings of the old "fortified farmhouse" are right out of a history book. The bathroom is not large by luxury hotel standards but more than functional with a shower. Highly recommended, just treat it with respect as we want it to be in the same condition next time we come.
We loved every minute of our magical stay at Champfreau. We booked the main house for us and the appartment for my parents. We loved the extensive grounds - especially fishing in the moat. Eating Al fresco and breakfast in the huge living room. Fantastically equipped kitchen - we don't usually cook much on holiday but the kitchen made it so easy. We bought food from the local markets and wine from the local vineyards. Steve and Bruce were exceptional hosts and we loved Zeb , the doodle and all the lovely cats. This place is like heaven !
We cannot say enough good things about our stay. The exquisite location, the stunning accommodation- the absolutely amazing hosts. The listing description and images do not do this property justice. The interiors, the pool, the grounds, the 3 minute bike ride to the village bakery and its heavenly pastries, the closely surrounding villages and daily markets.. The home and rooms are perfectly maintained and immaculately clean. We were treated as family but also allowed the privacy to explore and enjoy as we pleased. Steven & Bruce's local recommendations to see, eat and experience were spot on. The whole trip from the initial booking right through our entire stay was just a dream. The only sad part was having to say goodbye. We have stayed in a number of villas and chateau's throughout Europe but would without doubt say that this is beyond anywhere we have ever stayed, it was truly an exceptionally beautiful experience that we highly recommend to both couples, groups and families.
Varennes sur Loire is situated along the Loire river, 12 kilometres east of Saumur, mid distance between the towns of Tours and Angers in a UNESCO protected site.
DIRECTIONS: If you are approaching Saumur, stay on the north side of the Loire River. (Saumur proper is on the south side). You will travel east on the D152 from Saumur, in the direction of Tours for 12 km (10 minutes),then you will come to a large metal bridge crossing the Loire River, on your right. DO NOT CROSS THE RIVER. At this intersection the sign will show VARENNES -SUR-LOIRE on the right. Travel 1km into VARENNES and in the centre of the village, with the church on the right (this is a 'T' intersection), turn left (west) at the BAR COMMERCE onto rue des SABATIERS (this rue turns into rue de la Croix des Noues) We are at number 8. One half km out of the village you will see a wind mill on the left and then a large metal warehouse. Across from the warehouse is a large CRUCIFIX. This is the drive to the Manoir
Other Activities: Antique markets, local produce markets and wine tastings.
