I live and work in Brooklyn in the Gowanus district near Park Slope and Carroll Gardens. I am an artist and documentary filmmaker. Retired college professor(30 years) and administrator. I grew up about 30 miles from Pittsburgh with nearby Laurel mountains similar to the northern Catskills.
I am a single parent with a 16 yr. old daughter, who is more inclined to social life in Brooklyn and NYC and less interested in Catskills nowadays. So I want to hold on to the house, but I don't get there as frequently as before. Hence, the interest in renting the house out.
Henry C. Linhart , owner ( Hank ) purchased this house in 1995
I fell in love with Colgate Lake and the hamlet of East Jewett through renting nearby houses for successive summers. Its about a three hour drive to the city and the traffic is much more manageable than traveling to Long Island. Set in the mountains, the house is cool and does not require AC. Nary a mosquito, nor a tick and there is no poison ivy on the property or around the lake. The house is close to a quiet road (Rt. 23C) which facilitates winter access. This is a nice quiet escape from the city. However, there are plenty of active recreational possibilities nearby.
Living along the East Kill Creek - its eternally dynamic and fascinating -
Great Blue Heron and Kingfishers are frequently on patrol. There is an returning family of Canvasback ducks in May. I have seen an Otter in the winter. Deer, fox, occasional black bear (harmless if you don't go after their cubs). Eagles, wild turkeys, turkey vultures, and owls. All manner of song birds - my favorite being cedar wax wings. On a cloudless or semi cloudless night the sky is spectacular. Cross Country skiing or snowshoeing in the woods is a great winter walk and even more so with a full moon reflecting off of the snow.
We once surprised a porcupine while snowshoeing which climbed up a spindly tree barely able to hold it.
The encounter with nature is constant and the fresh air is invigorating. The pleasure of doing one thing at a time is thoroughly an antidote to urban multiplicity and stress.

We just came back from a glorious week at this property - my partner and 1.5yr old daughter. It is quite ample with three separate bedrooms, a large kitchen and sunroom, and a large living room/dining room. Laundry works well as does internet. My partner had some work to do and was able to do everything he needed. Well equipped kitchen for making most things you want - no food processor or mixers, but blender and toaster and all pots/pans. The yard was main thing for us - huge space to run around, right near a creek, plenty of space to play outdoor games, barbecue, lounge and relax. It is right near a road, but the backyard is completely protected. It's a great place for a family or group of friends. Would highly recommend. Also the nearby town of Tannersville has a lot to offer in terms of food (fresh made donuts, ice cream, burgers, amazing pancakes etc.) and some shopping. Then it's a quick drive to other towns and hiking, swimming areas. Totally fun and regenerating.

We are a family with two young children, and the house could not have been more perfect for what we were looking for -- an outdoorsy road trip with a comfortable home base. My kids loved the house and the yard, and having the stream right next to the house was ideal for swimming and adventuring with our fishing nets. The central location was so great for daily trips to see waterfalls and some of the quaint Catskills towns/cities. We loved it so much and can't wait to return!
We had a nice late August stay in Hank's house with our 2 year old. There was plenty of room for everyone and the location is fantastic (5 mins to Colgate Lake, 10 mins to Tannersville, 15 mins to North/South Lake and lots of hiking trails nearby). The huge backyard was a plus, as was the creek access. When we first drove up I was worried that it would be loud being so close to the road but it was incredibly quiet especially at night and in the morning.
The house itself is basic but covered all of our needs nicely. There were plenty of pots/pans/utensils/etc in the kitchen and staples in the pantry. The steep staircase was a bit tough to navigate with a toddler but other than that the house was kid friendly (library from baby to chapter books in the twin bedroom, ball and plastic bats in the sunroom).
Hank was very responsive and helpful during the reservation process and was available by text during our stay which I really appreciated.
Overall I would recommend this as a good place to stay for a long weekend or a week if you're just looking for the basics and won't be spending a lot of time in the house.
This was the perfect place for us to stay. The region is beautiful. Thank you Hank!
This is a wonderful house to stay in. It is cozy. We really only used the house to sleep in because we were out doing things in Tannersville, NY. The only thing that we wish there was in the house was a fan. We some how managed to stay on 2 of the hottest days and nights in East Jewett. It was to my understanding by alot of the locals that is very abnormal there. So nothing against the home owner. Other than that we had a great time in NY and the little towns were wonderful. Thanks Hank for the great home you have.
This really was a hit for our family - plenty of room inside the house and out for kids to run around and be watched from a comfortable deck. Looking out from the breakfast room onto a stream and woods was kind of great (not to mention spending much of the day enjoying said stream), and the location is perfect for outdoors - great hikes, many parks, lakes - and then easy access to Tannersville for a main street with a range of restaurants, galleries, yoga/massage, movie/live theater. Hank was very generous with all the treasures inside the house and we would definitely go back to experience another season.
Beautiful location near stream. Lots of space outside and inside. Old house with real wood fireplace and romantic atmosphere. Very comfortable beds and nice linen. Kids had a lot of fun playing outside, near stream and campfire.
The house is located within the Catskill Mountain State Forest area. Near the Blackhead Ridge. I particularly enjoy swimming at Colgate lake which is in a forever wild setting, has no lifeguards, or motorboats and is dog friendly. Aside from enjoying nature for free which is my preference there are many nearby recreational attractions : Bear Creek Landing - recreational center for kids - includes miniature golf, horseback riding, snowmobiling, and fireworks. Tannersville has restaurants, bars, street festivals antique shops, and a golf course.
Hunter - Ziplining, mountain biking, Skyrides on slope chairlifts, Art House Cinema and First Run Feature films. Piano Museum and classical music series. Music Festivals at the ski slope include country, rock & roll, and a festival where 100 bagpipes descend the mountain !
Maplecrest - Catskill Mountain Foundation classes in Ceramics, Weaving, and Painting.
Windham- Windham Mtn has a wide range of winter sports: Downhill, Xcountry, and Snowshoeing. In the summer - World Cup of Mountain biking, classical music series, historic Civil War Days, antique shops, restaurants and a Greene County art gallery.
Mountain Trails in Tannersville rents Cross Country Skis and snoeshoes and has 17 miles of groomed trails.
Phoenicia has the Catskill Mtn Railroad, tubing on the Esopus, and art and performance festivals.
East Durham has Zoom Flume, a water park, and an Irish music Festival.
Cooperstown, NY - has the Baseball Hall of Fame.
