My partner and I recently came back from our summer holiday with our 4 year old daughter and had the most amazing time staying at this hidden gem!
From our arrival, Elly made us feel so welcome and showed us around the apartment and gardens. I thought the welcome gift she left for us was such a thoughtful touch.
Our daughter loved the natural pool which was stunning and reminded us of a mini oasis tucked away, and especially the hosts two dogs (a couple of sweet Cavalier King Charles' who are normally down with the hosts but our daughter made a special point to visit!)
The apartment was bigger than we expected and had everything we needed for our stay. Big comfy beds and very pretty boho chic style interior.
Lovely to be away from the noise of the town at night but still so close to just hop in the car and be by the seafront, shops and restaurants within minutes.
Will definitely be coming back for another great stay! Thanks Elly
Attention to detail lacking
We spent a week at this property mid June 2018, and overall we had a fantastic time exploring the surrounding area, and revisiting Tomar where we stayed last year. The appartment is bright & airy and very roomy which we enjoyed. Unfortunately a few things let it down, which would prevent us from returning. Some of these things include beds which felt almost as hard as a concrete slab for us (the portugese are not renowned for their soft beds but this was the worst we've encountered!) the sofa in the lounge has long since seen better days & was uncomfortable, the oven has no shelves or rack for the grill pan, and the accomodation is situated in a more densly populated area than we were expecting...and as soon as night descended, the barking dogs commenced! As the property has a sceptic tank, we experienced some awful smells coming from the bathroom on several occasions too, which wasn't pleasant. This was despite adhering to the rules on what to flush/not flush down the loo. Some small investments & attention to detail could bring this property upto scratch, a shame really.
I was rather surprised to receive this review. To address some of the complaints, the beds all have orthoepedic mattresses which we only purchased last year and we have never received any complaints about them. The area is away from the main resort town and on a quiet and rural suburb. There are 2 empty fields on each side of the property. With regards to the dogs barking problem that is something beyond our control. As regards to the septic tank emitting a smell this is the first complaint we have received. The tank is emptied on a regular basis. The oven was purchased with only one shelf but we have also provided a microwave.
I am sorry that the guests did not have a good time.
Lovely spacious peaceful apartment
Our hosts were very welcoming and made us feel at home. This self contained apartment is near both the Atlantic and a quiet and beautiful bay. Lovely walks and views . Pretty garden with a pool and nice local restaraunts with authentic Portuguese menus. We highly reccommend to anyone who enjoys peace and quiet ..also opportunities for cyclists, artists, bird watching. etc.
Lovely house set in stunning scenery
Lovely house in the countryside just outside Sao Martinho with a beautiful garden and natural swimming pool (cleaned and filtered). I would advise car rental to enjoy this beautiful coastal area to the full - parking at the property is not a problem. The holiday apartment is on the first floor with a large living room/dining area with good facilities. The bedroom areas are comfortable and the apartment was cleaned to a high standard. My wife and I very much enjoyed our stay, and the owners who live on the ground floor made us very welcome with suggestions etc for places to visit. There are many good restaurants and interesting towns to visit within easy reach and my wife and I would thoroughly recommend the property.
We are so pleased that you enjoyed your first visit to Portugal and hope this is the first of many.
We look forward to your return.
Comfortable but tired
Owners very welcoming and live on the ground floor. Apartment attractive but in need of some TLC even simply replacing the many dud lightbulbs would be good. Master bedroom comfortable; second b/r has short creaky beds and no window blind. Garden attractive but guest sun beds way down the end as lovely patio restricted to owners understandably. Swimming Pool described as natural but it is not for swimming in as it is more of a garden pond complete with frogs etc so a trip to the beach is always necessary(10 mins by car ). Car absolutely essential as nothing is in walking distance.
Thank you for your review and feel it needs a response. The light bulbs are generally always tested by us to ensure that all is in good working order. However when bulbs do fail then it would be helpful if this was reported to us. We have had no problems in the past regarding "short, creaky" beds as most of our guests are shorter - your son was extremely tall and this was an exceptional case for us and we do apologize if he was uncomfortable.
With regards to the pool, it is a natural pool and therefore has frogs in it which is generally much enjoyed by our previous tenants. There is a patio/terrace for our guests own use including a BBQ area. Sun loungers can be moved around a very spacious garden and we provide as well, table and chairs and parasol.
We do try and ensure that our guests have a pleasant stay and if there are any problems we would appreciate it if you would let us know at the time.
Peaceful Gorgeous Oasis
Forged ahead to Sao Martinho with my two little ones (4 & 2 yr olds) in April not quite fully sure if the pictures would represent. A peaceful gorgeous oasis was what was waiting for us. The living room was a spacious sunny space with a kitchenette and dining area, facing the beautiful garden in the back. We kept the window open most days to enjoy the soft breeze. What I could see as a bonus was that since the sleeping area was on the other end, people can enjoy the fine inexpensive wines of Portugal without disturbing anyone sleeping (ie the kids). There is also a nice sunny alcove with windows galore for one to enjoy, whether reading or just chilling. The whole apartment was kept very clean and comfortable with so much room for even a group of 7-8 adults!
The garden was gorgeous and my kids had a blast just running around and around, while I got to take in the peacefulness of it. It was a perfect place to just de-stress and I kept commenting on how quiet and peaceful it was. If the weather was warmer, we would have definitely ventured into the natural pool. We still did luck out with beautiful weather for 8 out of the 10 days we were there though.
With the beautful weather we spent most days outside and went to the beach frequently. The beach was only about 1 mile+ from the villa and was exactly what I was looking for. Since it is contained within a horseshoe bay, the waves were calm and no undertows to worry about, so perfect for families with young ones. My kids enjoyed afternoons just playing on the beach and I didn't have to be on constant alert for fear of the waves. For those without young ones, Salgado beach on the other side, provided the rugged beauty and crashing waves.
The owners, Eleanor & Susie, were a delight! They went out of their way to make sure we felt welcomed and was enjoying ourselves. They were very accomodating and definitely made our trip that much more enjoyable!
Since I had the little ones, we didn't go to many nearby sites/attractions (Obidos, the Buddha garden, the dinosaur foot prints) but we did go to Nazare and Caldas, courtesy of Eleanor & Susie. Those trips to the markets were telling of the culture, fish soup at one of the cafe in Nazare was yummy!
Sao Martinho is a lovely low key place that does not feel overrun with tourism and Casa Rouxinol along with Eleanor and Susie made our vacation memorable! I'm already planning on returning again, this time with more family to enjoy this wonderful place.
