Minimum Stay 7 nights

Overview

About the property

INDOOR AND OUTDOOR SPACES ARE PERFECT FOR THE ENJOYMENT OF ADULTS AND CHILDREN

The name of the house is “Casa dei cardellini” that means “house of goldfinches” because tiny chirping birds like to make their nests in the jasmine hedge that runs along the porch. The house gives you a feeling of freedom, space and calmness.

The interior furniture is functional and is inclusive of all home equipment for six persons to live comfortably. There are three bedrooms (two double beds and one bunk bed for two persons). Quotation of a guest: “in the house you do not feel stranger; indeed it is a home away from home "!

Outdoor spaces are equipped with tables, chairs, sun loungers, hammock, etc. There is also an outdoor shower with hot water, a laundry, a barbecue and a wood oven to cook pizza. The courtyard is paved and shaded by olive trees. Many different spots in the garden are perfect to make you feel relaxed in total privacy. Inside the property, two cars can be parked. Read below: More details.

The house is located in a very good panoramic position overlooking the sea, the mountains and the village in a very quiet area with breath-taking scenic beauty. The garden around the house is huge. All the property is fenced. Always blows a pleasant breeze, even in summer hot days. The building was built with highly insulating materials in order to keep a healthy temperature inside the house. In addition, thanks to the sunny Mediterranean climate, the house is comfortable in spring and late autumn, too.

Normally mosquitoes do not infest the spot where the house is. In the evening on the terraces and in the porch a few citronella candles lit on are enough to ward off any possible lonely mosquito. The windows of the bedrooms and bathrooms have mosquito nets.

The house stands in the seaside village of “Santa Caterina di Pittinuri” in the municipality of Cuglieri. Santa Caterina di Pittinuri is a village of about 500 people (year-round inhabited by native people), therefore any month of the year, the tourists have not the feeling of living in a ghost town. A hundred yards from the house is a store that sells the main goods. Other shops (including a pharmacy) bars and a petrol station are in the village.

In the semi basement of the house there is a small apartment with its own courtyard and entrance. This small apartment is independent from the spaces and the services described above. It is lived occasionally by the hosts.

In front of the house, as the crow flies (200 meters distance) there is a kind of natural pool very impressive, surrounded by towering white cliffs. It is reached via a path between bushes of Mediterranean scrub. Either you can get to the water by small steps carved in the rock or you can dive in.

You reach the Bay of the village either by car or on foot (ten minutes walking). The beach is sandy on a side and covered with pebbles on the other side. The sandy side is suitable for small children because the water stays shallow for at least 40 meters. Along the beach, there is a slipway for boats. A few miles farer from the house there are endless sandy beaches. At 10 miles is the Golf Course Is Arenas. At 13 miles, is Cape Mannu, a very good spot to practice surf sport. At 18 miles, is the Roman and Phoenician archaeological site of Tharros.

In Oristano town (25 km from Santa Caterina) there is a huge shopping center “Porta Nuova” (a Mall); you find the supermarket Conad and forty different Shops. The Center is open every day, including Sunday from 9 am to 9 pm.

HOUSE OF GOLDFINCHES WELCOMES YOU FOR AN UNFORGETTABLE HOLIDAY!

It is a place where you can relax right from the very start, naturally. Everything is low-key. Enjoy the true oasis far from the hustle, a place of freedom, enjoyment and perfect relation with yourself and nature.

Enjoy the gentle scents of jasmine, lavender, myrtle and many other essences of the green wild unspoiled nature composing the Mediterranean landscape of this part of Sardinia. Visit the ruins and remains of ancient civilizations. Discover the cliffs, the rocks of magical beauty that remind lunar soil, the natural sculptures carved by wind and water, the Spanish towers.

Dive and snorkel in the clear turquoise water of the many bays.

Genuine and fresh food is so tempting, not to talk of the red and white wine which will help you to leave behind the bustle of everyday life.

Take part to historical events, to cult rituals and folklore, to festivals, to handicraft exhibitions, to fairs following one another all year around.

Sardinia will give you a great sense of wild space, peace and calmness and the locals will be very friendly and welcoming.

About MARIA TERESA CONROTTO GRIMALDI

My husband and I are retired people. We both worked in the field of marketing and communication. We were born and raised in Turin (Piedmont-North Italy) and our residence is still in Turin, however, every year when we are free of commitments, we like to spend some time in Santa Caterina di Pittinuri in Sardinia. We landed in the Island the first time in May 1970, for our honeymoon.

MARIA TERESA CONROTTO GRIMALDI purchased this house in 1995

Why MARIA TERESA CONROTTO GRIMALDI chose Cuglieri

Santa Caterina di Pittinuri has always made us feel good. Along the many years, we realized that such a spot was for us not only a magical place for our holidays but something more. Therefore, we began to nurture the dream of having a personal refuge right there. One day, during a walk, we noticed a piece of advice “plot for sale”: we bought that piece of land and we started to build the house.

Why we like so much Santa Caterina di Pittinuri? Many are the reasons: it is a pristine place; life runs easily and all is genuine. The climate is excellent. The elders of the place say that in the past century when epidemics (malaria, lung disease, etc.) caused many victims, the survivors so debilitated were taken to Santa Caterina of Pittinuri for the healthy properties of its climate. The bay with the majestic cliffs is like an enormous piece of art carved under the sky; the generous hospitality and kindness of the locals and much more make Santa Caterina a special place.

Since a few years, we have decided to open our home to other people. Many are the reasons. Forty years ago, we arrived to Sardinia as tourists and now we feel like being native Sardinian! We are pleased to pass on this passion and to provide to other people the hospitality we received at the time we were tourists. ... Finally, the proceeds we get from the lease allow us to do all the maintenance to keep the house in perfect order and efficiency.

What makes this house unique

.This house was built with care to exalt holiday times in full harmony with nature. The house is bathed by the rays of the sun from the first to the last ray of every day sunshine. In the porch, you may have your breakfast enjoying the sunrise from the mountains behind; in the evening, you can say good-bye to the sun that sinks into the sea, while sipping a Martini on the terrace. The outdoor area has many pleasant corners as “cozy refuges ". A thick hedge of green Pittosporum is perfect to shelter you when the mistral wind blows. On the contrary, the North wing of the garden will give you relief when the hot sirocco wind blows. The hammock under the foliage of the olive trees will be so tempting when the hot sun shines. Late in the afternoon, you might enjoy reading a book close to the lavender bushes and late evening the lawn will be a perfect bed to applaud the moonrise under a starry sky.

Perfect place to relax and very safe for a toddler

  • 5 of 5

We (2 adults and a 1,5 year old) spend a week at this lovely place to relax and enjoy the Sardinia weather.

After arriving late (22:30) at the location we were greeted by the owners and received a quick tour of the house. The child bed looked almost new (probably was since the tags were still partly on it) and everything was nice and clean.

Maria had purchased breakfast for us due to the arrival time and a nice bottle of wine to celebrate my wife's birthday. All this made us feel at home.

The lay-out of the house is good with the 2 bathrooms and 3 bedrooms being situated in one side of the house and the living area on the other side. This meant that the child can sleep without being disturbed by noises from the living room.

The kitchen is well equipped with pots and pans and herbs to cook with.

But the best part of the property is the outdoors area. The balcony has a beautiful view of the sea and is a nice place to relax in the afternoon and read a book.

We spend most time however in the garden at the back of the house. Its the perfect place to play with a child since it is completely fenced and safe for a child to play.

We would definitely want to come back here another time.

A Little Gem!

  • 5 of 5

When booking a house sight unseen in a location you have never visited, there is always a bit of uncertainty. How delighted my husband and I were to discover this little gem! We spent two beautiful and relaxing weeks at Cassa dei Cardellini located in the seaside village Santa Caterina di Pittinuri. Maria Teresa and her husband Antonio are the proud owners of this charming, very well maintained home and garden in a quiet natural setting on the West Coast of the island. Maria Teresa speaks excellent English and was always thoughtful and prompt about answering our questions and providing directions prior to our arrival and very accommodating throughout our stay. At one point we needed to consult a doctor and she made all the arrangements and served as our translator.

We so enjoyed the lovely view of the sparkling sea from the front balcony and a delightful vista of gentle mountains from the gardens behind the house. I will never forget the 6-8 foot high “wall” of bright red geraniums just next to the house. It was spectacular.

The house is spacious, comfortable and nicely equipped with for an extended stay. There is plenty of outdoor furniture in a variety of settings for dining, reading, sunbathing, relaxing, entertaining etc. Maria Teresa has prepared an extensive guide book in both English and German including information about the house, places to visit, beaches, restaurants, shopping etc. It was a great resource as we planned our beach excursions, hiking, and driving to Cuglieri, San Giovanni and the ruins of Tharros, Bosa, Alghero, Porto Cervo and Fluminimaggiore.

The nearby beaches are incredibly beautiful and virtually empty in the month of May allowing us to enjoy gorgeous walks along Mari Ermi, S’Archittu, Is Arrutas and Maimoni. The sun was always shining and there was a perfect breeze both on the beaches and at the house.

Our son, his wife and their 5 year old joined us for a week and what a treat that was. Little Colin loved exploring every inch and hidden corner of the gardens and delighted in finding Ninja the turtle who loves lettuce and showed up everyday for a treat!

As for Sardinian food, we loved the local seafood restaurants, simple but delicious fish, clams, mussels etc. My husband’s favorite was the seafood pizza, something new to us. Thank you Maria Teresa and Antonio for a delightful Sardinian holiday that met and far surpassed our expectations. Perfect location for a family holiday!

Owner's Response: Since I have put the house on rent, my primary aim has been to cope with the expectations of the guests. I am bursting with pride by reading that you had a “delighted holiday that met and far surpassed your expectations”! You have been the first American guests in my house. Your words encourage me to keep on working with my purpose: "Casa dei Cardellini: a home far from home!"

It was a very nice vacation for us. The property is well maintained and the owners are very nice.

  • 5 of 5

Thank you, Maria-Teresa and Antonio, for your hospitality and care that everything is working properly. The house is very nice, comfortable and the owners are really taking care of everything to make our vacation pleasant (all the household things are there, even anti-mosquitoes electric plugs). The small tourist guide Maria-Teresa wrote herself was very helpful for us. We followed her recommendations for sightseeing and restaurants and were never disappointed. The place itself gives opportunity to visit wonderful beaches to the south (Putzu Idu, Is Arutas, Maimoni, Is Arenas) and to the north (Bosa Marina). There is convenient small shop just 200m from the house. For a big shopping we went to Oristano. We would recommend this place to other families with kids.

spacious and nice house with lovely view

  • 5 of 5

we spent two lovely weeks in this beautiful house. It is very clean, well equipped and spacious. Especially this last point we appreciated a lot, we are a family with 4 children, so we really were pleased about the space! We appreciated the garden, the beautiful views into the mountains and from the balcony to the sea, where you can observe the sunset, a lighttower, old spanish towers and the cliffs.

In the garden you can make wonderful barbeques and enjoy the sun in sunbeds.

There is a minimarket within 5Minutes footwalk, for bigger shoppings you go to cabras, oristano or riola sardo (20-30 min. with car).

The owners are very nice and friendly.

Just perfect is what describes it best

  • 5 of 5

The house, the garden, the warm welcome of the owners - everything was just perfect and made our holiday such relaxing and splendid. We could use more superlatives beginning with the spectacular viiew from the balcony to the many inviting places all over the place and the warm atmosphere inside - but words can't express how beautiful it is. You have to feel and live it yourself. It's also the perfect place for kids - ours (almost 4 and 1 years old) loved it from the first second and felt at home right away. We are pretty sure that we will come back and back and back!

The house is in the seaside village Santa Caterina di Pittinuri in the Municipality of Cuglieri on the West Coast of Sardinia. The village (year-round inhabited by 500 native people) is a small and picturesque hamlet of Cuglieri, enclosed between the sea and the mountain range of Montiferru.

The geographical site of the house (in the middle between Nord and South of Sardinia), provides as an excellent base to explore most of the island (Bosa, Alghero, Barbagia, Barumini, Giara of Gesturi, Pistis’ dunes, Piscinas’ dunes, Montevecchio and Ingurtosu’ s mines, etc).

Santa Caterina di Pittinuri is on the edge of the Sinis Peninsula which is an area protected by the Ministry for the Environment in order to safeguard its natural heritage and it has been selected by the European Union as a "tourist destination of excellence".

The Coast has breath-taking natural beauty. Many areas are still natural and wild. Tourist facilities are modest and economic resources are scarce. Some neglects, any minor inconvenience that you will meet are the small price to pay to enjoy a pristine environment and not too "civilized". You are in a nature, which takes you to the origins. It radiates endlessly positive energy. Here you return to the true quality of life: to rediscover the charm of simplicity. This is a place where you can relax right from the very start, naturally. Everything is low-key. Enjoy the true oasis far from the hustle, a place of freedom, enjoyment and perfect relation with yourself and nature.

The beaches of Oristano area, near Santa Caterina di Pittinuri, are considered among the most beautiful in the island. They are the ideal environment for lovers of quiet beaches, as well as for fans of cliffs, diving and water sports like surfing, windsurfing, kite surfing, bird watching, horse riding, jogging in the country, etc.

On the beaches after heavy sea storms, you might find small or large piles of Poseidon, commonly called algae that are brought ashore from the sea. This seaweed is a tangible sign of an unpolluted sea. Beaches are free and are not equipped with chairs and umbrellas; however, there are kiosks that serve simple dishes, fried fish, sandwiches, ice cream and drinks. The kiosks are open and running generally from mid-June to mid-September. Close to the beaches, there are large parking areas. During the months of July and August, that spaces are charged.

Some of the main beaches of the Sinis area are: Is Arutas, Mari Ermi and Maimoni (the sand of the beaches is formed by tiny white pebbles/grains of quartz); San Giovanni di Sinis, Torre Seu, Sa Mesa Longa, Putzu Idu, Island of Mal di Ventre (in the warm and colourful waters adjacent to the various beaches of the little Island, there are numerous hot springs);

-Capo Mannu (it is surfers’paradise for its waves when the sea is rough).

To the North of the Gulf of Oristano, extends a wetlands area formed by a few ponds. They are full of mullet. Every year, over 8.000 flamingos come from Camargue. The best time for sightings of flamingos is Spring or late Fall.

On the hottest days of summer to find relief you may head for the mountains of Montiferru to San Leonardo. it is an area rich in mineral water springs. There are large areas with picnic tables shaded by elms, oaks and fountains. Besides, there is the Church of San Leonardo built around the century 1100 in Romanesque style.

As far as archeological sites in the surroundings of Oristano there are Tharros ruins. It is a vast archaeological area that preserves numerous testimonies of the ancient city of the Phoenicians, which then passed into the hands of the Carthaginians and finally to the Romans. The urban structure of Tharros is still visible in our times, with the houses of Punic origin, and later the cornerstones of paths Roman roads.

In San Giovanni Village there is an early Cristian Church, one of the oldest of the Island.

Other very interesting archaeological sites are Nuraghe Losa and Pozzo di Santa Cristina. The museum in the town of Cabras houses the statues of Giants Mont'e Prama. They represent archers, warriors, boxers and models of Nuraghe. It seems that the dating of this material ranged from the eighth century BC to the ninth or even the tenth century BC. Therefore, these sculptures might be the oldest in the Mediterranean basin.

Many historical events, cult rituals and folklore, festivals, handicraft exhibitions and fairs follow one another all year around. Genuine and fresh food is so tempting, not to talk of the many good wines! They will help you to leave behind the bustle of everyday life.
