I have loved adobe buildings and construction for 25 years. I left my home town for several years and when I returned I decided to refurbish the oldest buildings I could acquire into comfortable homes for travelers and friends. Welcome to my home town.
Laura Lynch purchased this chateau / country house in 2010
It's a 30 minute drive to the entrance of Guadalupe National Park and 10 minutes to Salt Basin Dunes. This church was built by a young missionary from Santiago, Chile and with a dwindling population over the many years the church congregation was not sufficient to keep the doors open. The Drive from here to the Carlsbad Caverns is about 55 minutes. Most folks come here to enjoy the Salt Basin Dunes and McKittrick Canyon and the Guadalupe National Park.
For the caverns
Internet is available nearby. (But I reccommend you unplug and rest as service is spotty)
Catered, home-made Mexican food delivered to the church, if you would like, at an additional fee. This is a peaceful town that respects and loves nature and the outdoors. Refrigerated air
Tour the beautiful San Isidro Mission Church and enjoy the vistas. A short drive 30 mins, takes you to the trailhead of Guadalupe Mountain and a shorter 14 mile drive to the Salt Basin Dunes. The volcanic cones in the area are a short 10 minute hike and McKittrick and Dog Canyon also nearby. Carlsbad Caverns are spectacular, a must see.
The place was wonderful! Ms Lynch was very gracious and has done a spectacular job refurbishing the church. Would absolutely stay here again! Wish we could have stayed longer!
We stayed in Dell City while we day hiked in the Guadalupe Mountains National Park. The old adobe Church was a fantastic place to stay. It is comfortable, spacious, has a fantastic view, a fire pit, and a well equipped kitchen. Laura is a great host. Be sure to visit the Spanish Angels Cafe. The local grocery store has all you need for cooking and hiking.
I've stayed in probably 15 VRBO locations with family and friends and Laura's house ranks among the best! What a unique idea this is;converting a former church into a home, while retaining some of its Catholic roots in the furnishings. This is a very well appointed, clean, comfortable place on the edge of a very quiet, friendly small farming community. This is remote country, which is why my friend and I had come. We spent a week hiking the trails of nearby Guadalupe and Carlsbad Caverns National Parks. It was so wonderful to begin and end our days in this house. If you come (which you should!) be sure to check out the Spanish Angels Cafe. It is a quintessential small town Mexican restaurant which features wonderful people and delicious meals at low prices. The Huevos Rancheros were so good that they earned a return trip. I look forward to returning to this cool place and I highly recommend it to all who are looking for peace, quiet, friendliness and something new.
We loved our time at Laura's house. Laura was an excellent host and the home was well equipped. She was also very helpful when we needed to change our travel dates due to a major snow storm passing through the region. There were many nice welcoming touches throughout the house including a fire pit ready to light. We would recommend this house to anyone heading to the Guadalupe peak area or just looking to get away from it all.
If you are looking to get away from all the chaos of daily life, this is the place. We booked this for my husband's 50th birthday, we have friends who drove in from New Mexico for a long weekend. We were amazed. The house is amazing, the people in town were more than happy to tell stories of Dell City, and although we did not get to meet Laura, her sister Anne stopped by when we arrived to give us a welcome bottle of wine. Friday morning was met with an amazing sunrise over the Guadalupe Mountains, the nighttime sky was inky black with more stars than we have seen in a LONG time. We even saw the Milky Way. The house is meticulously clean and decorated, the beds are comfy, the kitchen is well equipped. We suggest Laura tell future guests not to buy be sugar, there are several boxes, bags & containers of it. (haha) We will definitely be staying in Dell City again. Thank you Laura for allowing us the luxury of simpler living.
I booked this for my 30th birthday getaway and it was one of the better travel decisions I've made. The church was beautifully remodeled and the furnishings and decor were gorgeous and comfortable. A great kitchen, a beautiful bathroom, and the best view you could hope for.
It's a short drive to the entrance of Guadalupe Mountains National Park, and just a bit further to Carlsbad. It's definitely remote, and cell reception can be spotty, but if someone in your group has AT&T, you're fine.
There are a couple places to pick up food, but I recommend bringing what you need. And you get to put the awesome kitchen and dining table to use, so why not?
Laura was a wonderful host. She was friendly, inviting, and made us feel right at home.
I've already alerted the parents, and let them know that we'll be booking this place sometime in the not-too-distant future. :-)
