I have loved adobe buildings and construction for 25 years. I left my home town for several years and when I returned I decided to refurbish the oldest buildings I could acquire into comfortable homes for travelers and friends. Welcome to my home town.
Laura Lynch purchased this chateau / country house in 2010
It's a 30 minute drive to the entrance of Guadalupe National Park and 10 minutes to Salt Basin Dunes. This church was built by a young missionary from Santiago, Chile and with a dwindling population over the many years the church congregation was not sufficient to keep the doors open. The Drive from here to the Carlsbad Caverns is about 55 minutes. Most folks come here to enjoy the Salt Basin Dunes and McKittrick Canyon and the Guadalupe National Park.
For the caverns
Internet is available nearby. (But I reccommend you unplug and rest as service is spotty)
Catered, home-made Mexican food delivered to the church, if you would like, at an additional fee. This is a peaceful town that respects and loves nature and the outdoors. Refrigerated air
Tour the beautiful San Isidro Mission Church and enjoy the vistas. A short drive 30 mins, takes you to the trailhead of Guadalupe Mountain and a shorter 14 mile drive to the Salt Basin Dunes. The volcanic cones in the area are a short 10 minute hike and McKittrick and Dog Canyon also nearby. Carlsbad Caverns are spectacular, a must see.
The moment you walk into Laura's precious, comfy home you know you've picked a heavenly place that feels just like home. Staying here added more meaning to our Mom-daughter Christmas getaway. My daughter & I felt safe and well taken care of, especially after Laura stopped by to say Hello and present us with delicious turnovers. The drive to Guadalupe Mountain Nat Park and Carlsbad Caverns was pleasantly scenic & very exciting. I will definitely miss this heavenly home and will return when we bring friends and family to experience the wonderful time we experienced.
I've been away from this place since the Sunday before Thanksgiving, but daily it's in my head !! We walked through the door and somebody had read my mind: (1) there was a bottle of the best port I have ever had, and it warmed me a few nights beside the tire rim wood fire that wafted authentic West Texas desert scents that I just wanted to drench my clothes in, and (2) there was a mint condition Mexican straw vaquero hat in the rack in exactly my size, 7 1/4. Laura, the owner, has worked a spell on this place ! Perfect place for daily trips into the Park, and I'll be back even though the Peak Trail kicked my butt. Beautiful sunrise and sunset each day on the front porch. My rabbit friend visited most nights from his burrow in the xeriscape . Occasional coyote call. The area is beautiful in its own spare way. If you love the spirits of Texas ( and yes, there are many ) you have to experience an area like this. There is a confluence of many of them here, and this place/home is a perfect catalyst to awaken one to them. Friendly town. Thanks to Spanish Angels Cafe for opening up to stragglers for a great Saturday afternoon cheeseburger ! Next round I'll be in time for enchiladas !!
The adobe church in Dell City is an ideal location to stay if you are planning to explore the Guadalupe Mountains and Carlsbad Caverns. The accommodations were wonderful. The beds were comfy and the kitchen was well stocked. We used the crock pot so that we wouldn't have to cook after a long day of hiking.
The place was wonderful! Ms Lynch was very gracious and has done a spectacular job refurbishing the church. Would absolutely stay here again! Wish we could have stayed longer!
We stayed in Dell City while we day hiked in the Guadalupe Mountains National Park. The old adobe Church was a fantastic place to stay. It is comfortable, spacious, has a fantastic view, a fire pit, and a well equipped kitchen. Laura is a great host. Be sure to visit the Spanish Angels Cafe. The local grocery store has all you need for cooking and hiking.
