Overview

About the property

2 Bedrooms, 1 bathroom, sleeps 5-7

La Loutre is an old stone cottage on the edge of the hillside hamlet of Gaillac, overlooking a meander of the river Lot, with beautiful views on three sides. The medieval town of Cajarc is less than 2 miles away.

The cottage has two bedrooms, sleeping 5 comfortably, but there's also a sofa bed and a baby cot.

* Recent developments * - wi-fi for guests to use, the river view has been opened up with railings, the terrace has been relaid, and the parking has been levelled and bordered by railings.

The pretty village of St Cirq Lapopie is nearby and the Grottes du Peche Merle – famed for their prehistoric cave paintings – are a short drive away. A day trip to Cahors is also highly recommended – only 20 miles away along the picturesque road hugging the River Lot – and Figeac is about the same distance in the other direction along the River Cele.

It's an excellent area for fishing and walking. In fact one of the St Jacques de Compostelle routes passes the door, with walkers setting off from Cajarc in the morning, enroute to the Spanish border.

About Frances Holmes

We're a professional couple with two boys and live just outside London. I'm a compliance officer at a major accountancy firm. My husband is a project manager for a European construction company and has a background in geology. The ruggedness of the Lot Valley holds particular appeal to us both as we each spent part of our childhoods in Yorkshire.

Frances Holmes purchased this cottage in 2003

Why Frances Holmes chose Cajarc

We bought this house after falling in love with the amazing river views, and with this part of France - particularly Cahors, Figeac and Villefranche de Rouergue. It sits perfectly between them. We christened it La Loutre after seeing otters in the river below when quietly gazing out of the windows enjoying the view.

Martin was an Impressionist, originally from Toulouse, who studied in Paris - earning a gold medal at the Salon of 1889. He finally settled at Saint-Cirq Lapopie and produced some of his finest work in the Lot Valley. There are fantastic river views from two aspects of this room. There are bedside tables and lamps, chests of drawers and a wardrobe - and still lots of space! The second bedroom has dark chinese style furnishings and is decorated with Picasso line drawings - the famous 'Dove of Peace' and 'Sleeping Woman' as well as the less well known lithograph 'Francoise en forme de soleil'. This room has a more sheltered aspect - with a fig tree outside the window. There is a large chest of drawers and hanging space, plus bedside tables and lamps.

Notes:
Children are welcome, but the house does overhang the river Lot, so toddlers would have to be under constant supervision. From personal experience, we would recommend the house to groups of adults, or families with a baby or older children who can be trusted not to climb out of windows or off the terrace, but anyone with adventurous toddlers might not have a very restful time! There are steps down to the 2 entrances to the house, but all rooms are on the ground floor with no internal steps.

Fantastic Views

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely stay in la Loutre. The river views are amazing - it was lovely to get up in the morning, look out over valley and see nothing man made at all. La Loutre is part of a small hamlet, but set away from the other houses so it feels lovely and remote.

If you keep your eyes open you're likely to see otters from the dining room window.

There is off-road parking, which is great, but it's a tight squeeze and on a corner of the road so getting the car in is difficult the first few times. There is a lay-by just down the road, and it's definitely worth stopping there and taking a look at the road before taking the car in for the first time.

I'd definitely recommend the cottage for a group of adults, or a family with older children. Young children would have to be kept under permanent supervision though as the cottage literally overhangs a very steep drop down to the river.

There was a healthy collection of guides, leaflets, etc. for the local area, which was very welcome.

Wonderful holiday

  • 5 of 5

This was a beautiful place for our week away (my 40th birthday treat). A great base to explore the Lot - somewhere completely new to us - and very comfortable. Lovely big living spaces, and stunning views over the river. Very clean and comfortable with everything we needed. Plenty of local places to eat well, and walks in the hills. A really enjoyable experience.

Peaceful with lovely views

  • 4 of 5

This lovely old house is clean, tidy and well equipped with everything you could need. It’s a very peaceful place with beautiful views of the river. Nearby villages can supply all your provisions. Communication with the owner could be improved, but I’d be very happy to recommend this accommodation to anyone.

La Loutre - a pleasant stay in the Lot valley

  • 4 of 5

We had a very pleasant stay at La Loutre in August. The housekeeper was very welcoming and lives nearby.

The house was clean and tidy and there was enough crockery. The bed linen and towels were fresh. We ate at the long table indoors or outside on the terrace in the lovely weather.

The house is rural and unusual but spacious and in a wonderful setting near the river. The views are beautiful.

We were able to get everything we needed from Cajarc the nearest town. It is vibrant on market days.

We visited Villefrance, Cahors, Figeac, St Circ la Popie, and went further afield to a medieval village on a hillside, Conques. We liked the auberges at Tour de Faure and the one near the bridge in Cajarc.

We enjoyed our time at La Loutre and would recommend the Lot valley and this house for a holiday.

Thank you Ms Holmes

Merci Madame Holmes

Beautiful views

  • 5 of 5

The lovely cool stone cottage with its wonderful views - both from the windows and the terrace - was just what we needed! The sun rose through the bedroom window and we had breakfast outside each morning and supper and drinks in the evening. Went kayaking on the river Cele, visited ancient villages on hill tops, enchanting caves with 25.000 yr old paintings sat people watching in cafes and - best of all - sat reading watching 'our' river Lot - saw otters, red squirrels rustling in the walnut trees below us with buzzards overhead. Take your best binoculars. Cottage spacious, clean and comfortable, owners right, probably unsuitable for toddlers/small children. Village for food just 5 mins in the car, nice cafes and restaurants, surrounded by stunning deep silent countryside. Outside furniture comfortable too. Excellent location, need to return to see more!

Lovely house in a unique location with the delightful little town of Cajarc just 5 minutes away. Plenty of space and cool in summer (it peaked at 40 degrees!) Super area to visit and plenty of nice places to visit. Thoroughly recommended.
