Our modern, cozy home is located on the southwest corner of our farm and is a great place for family reunions, hunters, Madison County enthusiasts, hot air ballooners and others traveling through Iowa. The kitchen is fully equipped, there are three bedrooms (2 queen/1 full) and a family game room where there is also a daybed and trundle (2 twins). There are also 2 other houses on the farm available for rent (for BIG family reunions). We love having guests but if you want nothing but privacy you will definitely enjoy our guesthouse.
My husband and I originally purchased the farm as an investment with no intention of living here ourselves but we were drawn to it and moved from West Des Moines to the farm a few months after purchasing. We purchased 4 Belted Galloway Cattle and now run a 110 head operation and raise pastured poultry as well.
Julie Donaghy purchased this house in 2008
We liked the convenient location to Des Moines and Kansas City; two places where we spend a lot of time
Easy to access just off of I-35 and on pavement (not gravel)
Lots of natural light and a relaxed, peaceful place to stay only 20 miles from Des Moines
We were very comfortable and well provided for. The house was perfect for our family weekend and not overcroweded at all with 6 adults and 2 kids. We used the charcoal grill on the front deck and enjoyed the changing scenery as the sun set over the iowa countryside. We had plenty of room for a game of tag football on the front lawn. Julie was also available to show the kids the farm animals including baby chicks and a newborn calf. Thanks for providing such a warm space for our get together.
Lovely property, plenty of room for everyone to be comfortable. The only thing I had a problem with is that if you have older people that have a hard time getting around, there is no way to drop them off at the main level.
We had a wonderful experience with our stay! The property was so lovely inside and out. We were there for a week - six adults and two teenagers - there was ample room and we were very comfortable. More than enough space in the house and ample parking. The water for showers and bathing was instantly hot and for as many people that were in the house - we never ran out of hot water, even if all of us took showers in the morning. The kitchen was fully stocked with pots, pans, plates, coffee maker, etc. They even had a dozen eggs from the farm's chickens in the fridge! The books, games, puzzle books, and DVDs were a nice touch. Washer and dryer were great - even had laundry supplies to use. The owners were wonderful and very accommodating. The farmhouse is close to the main highway so finding it was a breeze and getting to major visiting spots near and around Des Moines was easy. The owners left information about tourist spots and a map on the fridge - which was helpful - and a great Iowa coffee table book to peruse. We had no plans to tour the Covered Bridges of Madison County but did so because of the information the owners provided and now are so happy we took their advice. It was a great way to spend the day! We traveled to Des Moines for some family business that was looking to be stressful, but being on the farm was so relaxing, the trip ended up being more of a vacation than a week of business. We felt at home and was able to do work yet decompress. The chickens and cows from the farm graze around the perimeters of the property and near the lake. It was a beautiful thing to see every day. Very picturesque and unique for folks from Los Angeles. :-) I highly recommend this property. They owners were wonderful and this family trip is one we will always remember.
The owners were very accessible and responded quickly to our questions. We loved the location- close to interstate and the farmland was lovely. We could hear the interstate traffic at night through the window but it did not bother us. The furnishings were nice and plenty of space-not cluttered. We would stay here again.
Rented this small home outside of des Moises. Plenty of space for two couples. Our friends arrived first, she called me a bit discussed on how dusty the place was. Grass was mowed but bushes on deck are very over-grown. Mattress on all bed are old and need of replacement. It was ok, but for the money I think we could have done better.
We enjoyed our stay. It was easy to get too. Relaxing and peaceful country side
This was our first time having a VRBO. We kind of had a late planned vacation so luckily the house was available the days that we needed a place. We also needed a place that allowed pets since we were meeting my daughter and her boyfriend who had a dog. We paid extra for the pet, which only stayed one night, but there was a minimum of a two night stay. The house was a nice change from a hotel. We had the place to ourselves and came and went without bothering anyone else. The location was right off the interstate and VERY easy to find. It was out in the country which made going anywhere for sight seeing needing to drive distances of 20-30 minutes or longer. It was great to have the kitchen stocked with pots and pans, some food items, coffee, etc. Candy filled the jars--mints, starbursts, etc. I was somewhat surprised when she kept a small amount of the deposit back to help cover her credit card costs. We would definitely recommend using VRBO, but next time would try to find one with no minimum nights stay.
