If you would love to connect to nature, yet have easy access to the joys of Santa Fe, Galisteo, Nambe and beyond ... we think you will love our home sitting on 28 acres in the beautiful Galisteo River Basin. And, if 28 acres isn't quite enough, our 'backyard' is 10,000 acres of pristine BLM land.
Galisteo River Basin is an environmentally protected area. This area is also considered one of the historical locations of the Anasazi, the 'original people', who may have lived here as long as 10,000 years ago. The Basin had as many as 20,000 inhabitants in 8 different Pueblos as recently as 1,000 years ago. Today, you'll only see 3 man-made lights at night but every star you can imagine.
The river is damned up stream, so it flows only during heavy rains. If you are there during the rains, it is fun to walk over to see the raging rapids.
Casa de Estrella Bella gets its name from the amazing amount of stars you'll enjoy in the evenings after a spectacular sunset.
The home is a little over 1,700 square feet and has:
2 Bedrooms - 1 King and 1 Queen Bed
Master Bath and a Half Bath
Amazing light and views from every direction.
2 Portals for eating under, enjoying the views and grilling (on the south side).
Spacious Living Room and Kitchen in the 'Old Adobe', which has 2 foot thick walls of rammed earth coated in sumptuous traditional plaster. 12 foot ceilings with old beams from an decommissioned brewery add to the relaxed atmosphere. Its warm, cozy and feels like a comfortable pair of shoes.
The home is all new construction with modern appliances, fully equipped everything (including telescope, games, and TV if you really need your fix), and small details that bring the home to life. By the way, Sarah (owner) is an architect and builder ... hence all the wonderful spaces and small details.
If you have extra people, the Airstream fits 5 easily on a Queen, Double and Twin Bed. We've had as many as 11 people stay comfortably, though you may need to take turns with the bathrooms.
Satellite internet and wifi. Its not super fast, but it does the trick. It will not work during big storms, but those do not last too long.
Amtrak rails are on our southern border. They cruise by only 2x a day.
And, the home is filled with both old and new furniture and some nice (at least to us) art we hope you will enjoy and respect (please, no touching).
As for central location:
- 75 minutes from ABQ airport
- 30 minutes to the Plaza, i.e. historic downtown Santa Fe
- 20 minutes to South Santa Fe for movies, malls, etc.
- 35 minutes to Opera House
- 60 minutes to Tent Rocks and fewer to Lake Cochiti
- 75 minutes or less to Bandelier National Park, Puye Cliff dwellings, Los Alamos, Chimayo and Nambe.
- 8 minutes to Madrid (old mining town turned art colony with a couple restaurants and coffee house)
- 0 minutes to hiking, nature, sun, moon and stars.
We've been happily married 21 years. We have a daughter getting ready for college. And, 3 crazy dogs. We met in New Orleans and live in the Bay Area.
Matt Brown purchased this house in 2002
We were travelling around the Southwest for about a month with our young daughter and dogs, after years of over-working in start-ups. We needed a break. Upon returning to Santa Fe (we'd lived there right out of college (sarah) and law school (matt)), we stumbled upon the land. It captured our heart immediately. The views, the colors, the creatures, the history, the sky, the petroglyphs... everything about it. We bought it on the spot. Raw and ready for us to design and build a home of our dreams. Sarah is an architect and a builder, so the home we are listing represents our efforts to create a sustainable, beautiful, thoughtful space for everyone to connect to and enjoy the land, sky and creatures big and small.
We've stayed in a lot of vacation rentals in Santa Fe and elsewhere. This is our favorite so far. For us, it was a perfect fit. We love Santa Fe, but the traffic and crowds can be exhausting. We love the natural environment of Santa Fe County and we take short day hikes whenever we can. Being outside town but being able to go to a great restaurant or farmer's market whenever we choose is the best of both worlds. The location of this house is outstanding. Just a few minutes down a dirt road from Turquoise Trail (NM 14) just north of the historic village of Los Cerrillos.
The house itself is beautiful. Modern architecture and traditional adobe, all in the same house. Beautiful light and airflow. All the amenities of home. Excellent kitchen for cooking and comfortable meals at home. Nice master bathroom and shower. Extremely well maintained. Comfortable!
This would be a great spot for any nature-loving couple or family. We'll be back!
We were a group of six women that flew in from all over the country, to celebrate my 50th birthday for a long weekend. This property, down to the smallest detail, exceeded our expectations. Communication with hosts was easy and timely, I got such a nice vibe from them before we arrived and then the house strengthened that feeling. Pictures can't do justice to the way you will feel in the house, which delighted our senses at every turn. The mix of art & objects collection installed in the home was a highlight, as several in our group are artists and designers. Matt & Sara have created a very special place that is perfect for a retreat from the city --perfectly clean, very well stocked kitchen, lush bed linens & towels, enough hot water for 6 showers one morning, breathtaking views out every window, living and dining space flows perfectly for small parties. We had birthday dinner on the porch with flowers, tons of candles, stars and then a rising moon. We shopped for dinner at the fantastic Railyards Grower's Market and enjoyed the artists area there as well. If you are in Santa Fe seeking a birthday cake, I highly recommend the coconut cream cake at Dulce. Great BBQ dinner out --upscale casual with easy parking at The Ranch House. Not one of us wanted to leave this spectacular property at the end of our stay, several vowed to return and we all felt like the hosts infused their place with so much love, it surrounds you when visiting. Anyone who gets to stay in this incredible house is very lucky...we feel blessed the hosts are willing to share it.
The house is clean, well-decorated and comfortable to hang out in. The outdoor space is amazing.
Its a lovely warm home to be in. The drive into the center of Santa Fe is not bad, about 40 minutes. We happened to have plans each day in Santa Fe and it wasn't bad having to do the drive. I would have loved to have just stayed at the house and read and sat around, maybe next time!
Spending three nights at this amazing home was not enough. From watching thunderstorms roll though to incredible sunsets this place is magical. The surrounding area make's you feel like you are the only people around for miles but also you are so close to Santa Fe that day trips are super easy.
As for the house itself, there is nothing to say but that it's one of the most comfortable and well thought out homes we've stayed in. From the moment we arrived we felt like we were in our own home and when it was time to leave it was hard to pack up and take off.
We definitely will be planning our next trip out to NM and the only place we would stay would be here.
Thanks again to Matt and Sarah for letting us stay.
Joe and Laurie.
We've used VRBO to stay on the beach and in the mountains. This property far exceeds any place we've previously stayed in. The home is beyond beautiful. The layout is perfect. The setting couldn't be more beautiful. We chose not to dine out, so we could grill and enjoy the views at "home". We loved letting our four kids safely explore the land, for hours. The views are breathtaking. Depression hit when we had to leave. I hope we can visit again. The property is incredible. It was perfect. We visited Santa Fe, Los Alamos, Taos and Albuquerque. Our family had many fun experiences. When anyone asks my favorite part, I tell them it was the house we stayed in. I could not have loved it more. Matt and Sarah, thanks for sharing this property with our family!
This definitely is a serene and tranquil property! The house is beautiful and had everything we needed. Coming from the Midwest, we were a little worried about the lack of air conditioning, but in our search discovered that this was pretty common for the area. The design of the home does help to keep it cool. It was 90-100 degrees outside every day we were there but I was never uncomfortable in the house.
The property is breathtaking! We have never stayed anywhere so quiet. The location was also great for sightseeing. We spent one day in ABQ, a couple in Santa Fe, another hiking Tent Rocks and Bandelier, and another cruising the Turquoise Trail stopping to visit all the little shops and restaurants. The house was the perfect place to return to at the end of the day. We have never seen so many stars! And the hummingbirds were amazing to watch. Be sure to fill the feeders while you are there.
The house description mentions the tracks that run past the property. We never saw a train while there as they apparently run during the middle of the day while we off doing other things. We flew into ABQ but decided to take Amtrak home as a couple of us had never traveled by train and we thought it would be an adventure. We were delighted and sad to pass right by the house on those same tracks on our way out of town. We unabashedly waved and yelled "Bye House, We will miss you!"
We would definitely stay here again.
From our home, you can hike to ancient petroglyphs, adobe ruins and throughout the environmentally protected Galisteo River Basin.
