Tranquility in the Home of the Anasazi

About the property

Check out www.estrellabella.com

If you would love to connect to nature, yet have easy access to the joys of Santa Fe, Galisteo, Nambe and beyond ... we think you will love our home sitting on 28 acres in the beautiful Galisteo River Basin. And, if 28 acres isn't quite enough, our 'backyard' is 10,000 acres of pristine BLM land.

Galisteo River Basin is an environmentally protected area. This area is also considered one of the historical locations of the Anasazi, the 'original people', who may have lived here as long as 10,000 years ago. The Basin had as many as 20,000 inhabitants in 8 different Pueblos as recently as 1,000 years ago. Today, you'll only see 3 man-made lights at night but every star you can imagine.

The river is damned up stream, so it flows only during heavy rains. If you are there during the rains, it is fun to walk over to see the raging rapids.

Casa de Estrella Bella gets its name from the amazing amount of stars you'll enjoy in the evenings after a spectacular sunset.

The home is a little over 1,700 square feet and has:

2 Bedrooms - 1 King and 1 Queen Bed

Master Bath and a Half Bath

Amazing light and views from every direction.

2 Portals for eating under, enjoying the views and grilling (on the south side).

Spacious Living Room and Kitchen in the 'Old Adobe', which has 2 foot thick walls of rammed earth coated in sumptuous traditional plaster. 12 foot ceilings with old beams from an decommissioned brewery add to the relaxed atmosphere. Its warm, cozy and feels like a comfortable pair of shoes.

The home is all new construction with modern appliances, fully equipped everything (including telescope, games, and TV if you really need your fix), and small details that bring the home to life. By the way, Sarah (owner) is an architect and builder ... hence all the wonderful spaces and small details.

If you have extra people, the Airstream fits 5 easily on a Queen, Double and Twin Bed. We've had as many as 11 people stay comfortably, though you may need to take turns with the bathrooms.

Satellite internet and wifi. Its not super fast, but it does the trick. It will not work during big storms, but those do not last too long.

Amtrak rails are on our southern border. They cruise by only 2x a day.

And, the home is filled with both old and new furniture and some nice (at least to us) art we hope you will enjoy and respect (please, no touching).

As for central location:

- 75 minutes from ABQ airport

- 30 minutes to the Plaza, i.e. historic downtown Santa Fe

- 20 minutes to South Santa Fe for movies, malls, etc.

- 35 minutes to Opera House

- 60 minutes to Tent Rocks and fewer to Lake Cochiti

- 75 minutes or less to Bandelier National Park, Puye Cliff dwellings, Los Alamos, Chimayo and Nambe.

- 8 minutes to Madrid (old mining town turned art colony with a couple restaurants and coffee house)

- 0 minutes to hiking, nature, sun, moon and stars.

About Matt Brown

We've been happily married 21 years. We have a daughter getting ready for college. And, 3 crazy dogs. We met in New Orleans and live in the Bay Area.

Matt Brown purchased this house in 2002

Why Matt Brown chose New Mexico

We were travelling around the Southwest for about a month with our young daughter and dogs, after years of over-working in start-ups. We needed a break. Upon returning to Santa Fe (we'd lived there right out of college (sarah) and law school (matt)), we stumbled upon the land. It captured our heart immediately. The views, the colors, the creatures, the history, the sky, the petroglyphs... everything about it. We bought it on the spot. Raw and ready for us to design and build a home of our dreams. Sarah is an architect and a builder, so the home we are listing represents our efforts to create a sustainable, beautiful, thoughtful space for everyone to connect to and enjoy the land, sky and creatures big and small.

Very nice vacation stay

  • 5 of 5

Just returned from a week in Santa Fe. The property was all we hoped for and more. It was so quiet and peaceful but also close enough to the city that it was easy to go back and forth. We enjoyed the interior decorations!

Best Spring Break

  • 5 of 5

Our family was looking to relax, unplug and reset. This house was prefect! The tranquility and the beauty of this house and the property it sets on were simply lovely. The house has everything you could need to be very comfortable, and the views out every window were amazing. Architecturally this house doesn't miss a step- it is so well done, and a pleasure to call home for a few days.

The drive to Santa Fe was easy, and not too long. We explored Bandelier and the small town of Madrid and we were always happy to end our day back here.

Thank you to the owners for sharing this wonderful place with us! We will be back!

Absolutely perfect!

What an amazing place. Well worth the drive off of the beaten path. The home was beautifully decorated, masterfully remodeled, and just a perfect place for us to vacation. I will definitely be back again and will recommend to anyone heading that direction.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the glowing review. We love hearing how our visitors enjoy the home, environment and the urban amenities of Santa Fe or even Madrid. Just so everyone knows, Sarah designed and built the home from scratch. We tried our best to honor the land and its history. Check back in 20 years for any remodeling :-) Salud.

A Quiet cozy secluded spot under the stars!

  • 5 of 5

Had a great stay here in this beautiful home. Very comfortable and warm for our family ski trip. Views and seclusion were all as advertised, including the amazing sky at night, so many stars!!! Favorite surprise of the trip: a truly awesome shower and walking around in socks on the radiant heat floors after skiing! It was the pampering we needed after a day on the slopes!

Wonderful house and environment to get away and enjoy family and friends!

  • 4 of 5

Where to begin? I will remember with great fondness the time we spent in this beautiful home amongst the mountains. It was a terrific get away for my family. The house is lovely. There is plenty of space in the common areas. We had 6 adults, 2 stayed in the air stream. The first night it was cold in the air stream but then they moved away from the door and were comfy. Accommodating adults only, I'd stick to the two bedrooms in the house ( for 4 adults) and 2 in the air stream. More kids could be accommodated easily but not really great for more adults. The house was clean and well stocked. The only downside is that there are only 1.5 bathrooms and they are side by side on the first floor. The art work is terrific throughout the house; you can tell a lot of care went into the design and decorating of this home. Visiting Madrid and Santa Fe was easy and a lot of fun! Thanks so much!

Beautiful home, with everything you need.

  • 5 of 5

This is such a beautiful home, remote and QUIET. We loved the feeling of seclusion, especially being just about 30 min from downtown Santa Fe. Matt and Sarah really thought of everything you could possibly think of, when they stocked the house. Soft robes, everything in the kitchen to cook your own meals, soft sheets, comfy bed, even toothbrushes if we forgot ours! Great views, and we even got to spend time watching 2 large hawks in their nest, bringing food to their newborns just about 50 yards from the house. (Thanks also for the use of the binoculars and telescope - amazing!) Highly recommended.
