Wild Rose Cottage offers old world charm, modern day conveniences, wonderful views, and a private beach. Enjoy a peaceful lakefront getaway with traditional up-North ambiance.
Big Hills lake is 133 acres of crystal clear water for full recreation activity. It has no-wake hours in the morning and evening for quiet fishing. The private beach has 87 feet of firm, sandy frontage which slopes gradually into the spring fed lake for great swimming.
The cottage is light and airy with plenty of windows to bring the outside-in for cross breezes and sounds of the North woods. The original cottage, built in 1926, has been modernized and blends into the great room, built in the 1950s. An open floor plan connects the rooms by doorways, without the traditional hallway. The result is an intimate transition between rooms.
The Great Room features: a grand fire place, gable ceiling, pine-board floors and knotty-pine walls. It is the natural focal point for activity in the cottage. Amenities include; a television with HDTV channels delivered by antenna, a DVD player, and Wifi internet connections. Family friendly DVD's, books, board games and puzzles are available too.
The bright galley kitchen has modern cabinetry, full size refrigerator, electric range and oven, traditional and Keurig coffee makers, a microwave, toaster, and new cookware. A stainless steel gas grill is located off the kitchen. For outdoor cooking, a stainless steel, Weber gas grill is located near the kitchen.
The bathroom is updated with a pedestal sink, tub and shower. A unique Old World feature is the bathrooms' side door for direct access from outside.
Bedrooms in the cottage are spacious. The Window bedroom, with its eight windows, has a queen size bed. The Wood bedroom, with its knotty pine walls, vaulted ceiling and wood floor, has two single beds. There is a full size sleeper sofa in the Great Room. The cabana has a futon, which folds out to a full size bed for those needing extra room.
The dining area, located near the deck, features seating for four, a serving buffet, and small refrigerator for handy access to condiments and beverages.
The wood deck has plenty of room for family gatherings featuring two sets of four place patio tables with shade umbrellas. This is a great place to gather anytime of day.
The campfire ring is located near the deck. Outdoor seating, complimentary firewood, marshmallow forks, and a dutch oven are provided.
The rock and mortar pathway to the boathouse and beach is a unique, and charismatic feature. Built approximately 50 years ago, stones left behind by the glaciers during the ice age were used in its construction.
The boathouse features two distinct activity areas. On top is the cabana featuring large glass and screened windows, sun shades, a coffee table, comfortable seating. A small refrigerator to keep beverages cold and handy during hot afternoons. For cool evenings, a space heater keeps the cabana comfortable. It's the perfect location for kids to hang out during the day, and a great evening retreat for adults. Located beneath the cabana in the boat house is additional shady seating, and a place to store beach toys.
Guests have complimentary access to the Old Town brand canoe, 2 Pelican brand Summit 100X kayaks, and a 4 person paddle boat. Life jackets are available for sizes 30 lbs. to adult.
The property is about 1 acre in size, offering views of the lake framed by trees. At the entrance to the property is a glacial kettle (a large depression in the land formed by glaciers) which provides a natural separation with a long private driveway. An additional 20 acres of forested land behind the property provides additional tranquility.
Large Mouth Bass, Walleye, Northern, and Pan fish are common and offer anglers plenty of action. Fly fisherman will enjoy the nearby Willow Creek and Pine River fisheries, with their Class 1 trout streams and more than 2,000 acres of public land access. Willow Creek is only 5 minutes away.

Stephen Beaver purchased this cottage in 2014
Our family has been vacationing in the Wild Rose area for many years. Visiting Wild Rose is like going way up North, with plenty of forest woodlands, lakes, and streams; and its still pretty close to our home. We finally decided to find a place we could call our summer home. After looking at many alternatives, we found our cottage on Big Hills Lake -- a peaceful and beautiful location, with a well maintained cottage, where we could spend quality time with family knowing that all the details are covered and in place for fun. We invite you to make our cottage your vacation home too!
The floor plan reflects the heritage of the property. The original 100 year old cabin integrates with a great room built in the 1950's. The result is a quaint and very comfortable cottage for everyone. Located on top of a hill overlooking the lake, there is a reliable cool breeze to keep temperatures comfortable with great framed views of the lake. The many windows allow nature to be visibly present in the cottage at all times.
An activity area exists for each member of the family, and their interests. Solitude can be found in the charming and peaceful cottage, while plenty of fun in the sun is available around the boathouse. There are complimentary boats in the boathouse, and various beach toys for children (along with a couple of ready to use fishing rods) to enjoy on the lake. There are also plenty of nearby activities to keep explorers and sports enthusiasts engaged. The ambiance of the lake cottage, its crystal clear waters, and plenty of activities make it a wonderful place for a Summer vacation.
The lake was beautiful! Very clear with a sandy bottom. Enjoyed having options of kayaks, paddle boat, and floats/noodles. Also all the necessay equipment like life vests. Stone steps were a bit steep, but we were warned about the climb. Cottage was very open and comfortable. I greatly appreciated the new central air conditioner especially since I have a health condition that is worse in hot weather. The cottage had everything we needed to enjoy our stay. Having wifi was a great bonus. We brought our Apple TV box to watch movies at night. My son was able to take his final online exam for his college class. If it wasn't available, he would have had to stay home. Also appreciated the history and background about the cottage and surrounding area. Ice cream at the mini golf course was a special treat! Thanks for a great week!
We loved the cottage from the moment we unlocked the door into the kitchen, then onto the two bedrooms and the great room. I had grown up on Hills Lake and wanted to return to row on the lake. I wanted an original style cottage... the Rose Cottage! EVERYTHING is included except food, your clothes and bathroom and beach towels. The kitchen is appointed with new dishes, glasses and cookware. The cottage felt so much like home! We will be back in the future!
This cottage and the amenities will not disappoint! If you are looking for a clean, well-appointed place to stay on the lake we can tell you we would highly recommend this cottage. The deck off of the great room was perfect for morning coffee, bird watching, lunch with family and fantastic views of the lake. The steps up and down to the water gave us a bit of a cardio workout, but that was OK as the destinations were filled with fun. The boat house has everything a family could want for lake adventure; including kayaks, paddle boat, fishing poles, sand toys, life jackets, blow ups, chairs, umbrellas, tables, radio, yes this cottage will have all you need, the Beaver family have thought of everything!
The air conditioning kept the entire cottage cool and was very quiet, sitting in the great room reading was comfortable and peaceful. The water was hot right when you needed it to be and the kitchen, although small, was equipped with many items one would have in their own home, making food prep and clean up a breeze.
Our communications with VRBO were personal and timely, Stephen kept us up to date at all times. Very professional, thank you for a wonderful experience all around!
Clean. Beautiful cottage. Well organized. As advertised. Lake is beautiful and not too busy. Kids had a great time.
The cottage is charming: bright, neat, and very clean, with all the supplies you'll need. The setting is very lovely, with a private swimming area, loaner kayaks, and a beautiful view of the lake from the terrace. Steve and Peggy were terrific hosts, always quick to respond to questions and eager to help. We had a terrific week and are hoping to come back next year!
