We love Atwater because it is so pedestrian-friendly and bike-happy (flat terrain with awesome weather) so that you can pretty much get yourself anywhere. Now the best part - you can get yourself to world class coffee/bakeries (Proof + Village Bakery), acclaimed breweries (Eagle Rock and Golden Road), award winning restaurants, cafes (Canele, Momed, All'Acqua) and uber groovy stores such as Individual Medley and Common.
LA is traditionally a car town however we're increasingly walking and biking everywhere here now. Several of our guests have used ONLY public transport for their trip (originating to/from LAX uand around) and have had a glorious time. Once you're here you can literally walk everywhere, including along the lovely LA River.
OTHER THINGS TO NOTE
Do yourself a favor and do a quick internet search of Atwater Village and you'll discover fascinating history about Walt Disney (including his regular table at Tam O'Shanters and his homage to our famous Hyperion bridge at Disneyland). Most overlooked is our awesome LA River, which our family walks every morning, marveling at the greater herons, ducks and a myriad of wildlife!
We're an affable Australian family who are adore Atwater Village and love sharing all the local treasures. Shelli-Anne was awarded 'Atwater Villager of the Year' by the Chamber of Commerce and just received 'Woman of the Year' by the local Congressman so we're pretty well versed in our neighborhood! You'll mostly meet us walking our two daughters (and rescue pup Wally) to nearby Atwater Elementary School, riding our bikes along the LA River, or out on the deck enjoying the SoCal sunshine.
Shelli-Anne provides a wonderful place to stay in LA. I came to visit 2 friends of mine and Atwater Village was the perfect place! The unit has a full functioning kitchen and quite a large living/dining room. The bed was out of this world comfortable! Bedroom was equipped with a 6 drawer dresser and very large closet. The AC units were appreciated as the temp was in the 90's. Just in case you forget any toiletries, there is a stash in the bathroom cabinet. The unit was very quiet as well. Shelli-Anne was very welcoming and hospitable, willing to answer any questions. I greatly enjoyed the welcoming snacks after my trip in. This place was perfect for me, but would be great for a couple or pair of friends too! :)
My girlfriend and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay here! Shelli-Anne warmly welcomed us upon our arrival, and gave us a rundown of all the things to do in the neighborhood. The guesthouse is just as cute and cozy in real life as it is in the pictures - the bed was super comfy! There were snacks, and even a couple of cold beers waiting for us in the fridge! Shelli-Anne was the absolute best host, the guesthouse was perfect, and the neighborhood is quiet, but also near lots of great food and drink. I cannot say enough great things, we will definitely be back. Thanks Shelli-Anne and family!
First and foremost, Shelli-Anne is all sorts of warm and friendly. She personally greeted me as though I was a friend she hadn't seen in awhile. Quick intro to her adorable daughter and doggie gave me a glimpse at her eco-conscious-but-not-militantly-so household. The guest house is above the garage and decked out with all the amenities, most important for my stay in late July was the two AC units in the bedroom and living room. Great coffee (along with creamer!) awaited me in the fridge, as well as sparkling water and some snacks. Great decor, selected with taste and love; to me its the little things like the felt coasters that just make this place a treat for the soul. The view of the adjoining garden is desert bohemian, and there is a little Aussie touch to things, but deftly avoids being obnoxious. Shelli-Anne dispensed info about coffee, happy hours and nearby taco trucks. Use of the driveway for my car was a lifesaver. In close walking distance to a lovely portion of the LA river that I had not seen before...almost natural! Only note I have is that the guesthouse outshines its surrounding neighborhood, so don't expect pristine sidewalks if you are a walker like I am. Although its a quick two minutes by car, it is about a twenty minute walk to the main areas of Atwater Village, so bring your sunhat. I wish I had been able to stay more than my two nights, but I suspect I will be returning to the guesthouse soon.
We had a great trip all the way around! Shelli-Anne and Gavin were wonderful hosts and ensured our stay was a good one along every step of the way.
Visiting our son in Los Angeles reminded us how expensive this city is and we were excited to find a place that was within a mile of our son, cost less than hotels, and had a living room and full kitchen. We had never used a service like Home Away and were rather reluctant, but talking to Shellie-Anne, our hostess, relieved any reservations we had about this new experience. She was so welcoming and kindly as was her family. The guesthouse was just as pictured, very comfortable and lovely with everything you needed. Atwater Village is a great location. The neighborhood was lovely and a great place to walk to restaurants and the like. Will try and stay here again the next time we visit our son.
My 12 year old son and came for 3 months - Shelli Anne's place was perfect. Tons of light, clean and it has everything you could possibly need. Shelli Anne's and her family are very welcoming, warm and friendly. I can't say enough great things about the apartment and hospitality. Truly special.
