About Gerald Dovel

We have lived in Luray, VA our entire lives, and have always loved it here. My wife and I both hold public positions; her with page county schools and myself with the page county health department. 20 years ago after our home was paid for I bought our first monthly rental property on High Street in downtown Luray. It was a big investment, and lots of long nights after work were spent there to bring it into the condition I wanted, but it turned out great. A lot has changed since then, and 1 monthly rental property has turned into 26. Two years ago we decided to expand our horizons and move into more than just monthly rentals, which ultimately led to Old Mine Cottage. It took a two year process to get to today, but the result is a gorgeous property that is ready to be utilized. As we continue to grow in the business world we invite you to come and stay with us. Let us know how we did. We think you will be impressed.

Beautiful, quiet, comfortable cabin

  • 5 of 5

My girlfriend and I stayed here on a weekend getaway. The place is very well maintained and very cute inside and out. While it's right on a shared driveway, it was very quiet and private. The hot tub on the deck was superb, the soaker tub was fantastic and the shower was roomy. The trains passing by are loud since they are so close (but I find it a benefit as I love trains). I will definitely book this place again and potentially with my kids along as well. The owner was very nice and accommodating, pleasant to communicate with. Great place, highly recommended.

Pure Relaxation Minutes From Shenandoah

  • 5 of 5

If you're looking for a great home base to explore Shenandoah National Park, this is the place. We stayed the week of July 4th and loved this place. The pictures simply do not sell this place like they should. Trust the reviews.

The home was well stocked with all you could need except for food. All the comforts of home were provided. The only thing we found ourselves wanting more of were pots/pans to cook with. Not a huge deal though considering we mainly used the grill.

The hot tub is amazing to have after hiking all day. It is very clean and in great shape. As others have said, the hot tub was checked almost daily by the owners. They also filled the fire pit with wood for us each time they came by.

The home sits on a ton of land and you will rarely see another soul. Yet it is 15 minutes from the park entrance and 15 minutes from Luray. It's really the best of both worlds. Do not hesitate to book and enjoy!

Wonderful, Relaxing Getaway

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I had a wonderful time at the Old Mine Cottage. It was the perfect place to rest, relax and renew. The location is convenient to almost anything we could want or need. As vegetarians, we were able to find organic foods and vegetables at the local food stores and Walmart, which are about 10 minutes away. The kitchen was well stocked, but I would suggested bringing an extra saucepan if you plan to cook a lot. I was able to prepare every meal very comfortably. We loved the hot tub and the owner's son came to check it every day. We also used the fire pit. There was plenty of wood that was replenished every day. The fire pit was a great place to listen to the evening birds and watch as the stars came out.

We spent two days at Shenandoah National Park, which is also only a short drive from the cottage. We didn't visit Luray Caverns, but that is another attraction in town. We have visited the caverns in the past and it’s a fantastic experience. There is a train that passes near the property, and we actually loved it. It only came by a few times a day, but when we heard the train coming, my husband ran to take pictures of it. The train interested us so much that we visited the Railway Museum at the Visitors Center in downtown Luray. I also have to mention the people of Luray. Everyone we came in contact with was friendly and helpful... from the women at the Visitors Center to clerks at the stores and people we passed on the street. Everyone had a friendly smile and a pleasant word or two. We feel like we got a real taste of true southern hospitality.

The cottage was secluded and peaceful. Our week at the Old Mine Cottage was a week of simple pleasures: listening to birdsongs, watching sunsets, days of reading, resting and restoring. We hope to visit again soon!

Perfect location!

  • 5 of 5

Everything was perfect - we will be coming back for sure! Gerald was very friendly and had all of the necessary ammenties needed for a great time. We had all of our meals at the house and went to see the local attractions during the day. Nights ended with jacuzzi and hanging out around the fire.

Out in the country feel but a stone's throw to SNP and Luray

  • 5 of 5

My husband, dog and I had a great time staying at Gerald's cottage and would certainly stay there again. There are really too many positives to write in one review, but here are just a few:

--It was extremely easy and quick to get to the cottage from Washington DC. We had no problem finding or getting into the house at night.

--The location of the cottage can't be beat. It's a ten minute drive to SNP and a ten minute drive to a grocery store. Yet, when you're at the cottage, you feel like you're way out in the country.

--The house is really quite large and would be perfect for a large family or up to three couples. I think the house is also in great shape. The pictures don't quite do it justice.

--The house has a hot-tub, and Gerald stocked the fire-pit for us. We were able to watch deer (including a baby) in the front yard from the hot-tub. We grilled and ate dinner on the front porch every night.

--Gerald was a wonderfully hospitable host.

Our stay at the cottage was really lovely. Just to note two things we found helpful for our stay: Gerald provided flashlights for the yard at night, but we were glad to have our headlamps, particularly when we were out with the dog. We were also glad to have brought conditioner, which was about the only thing not provided at the house.

Relaxing Getaway!

  • 5 of 5

My husband, myself and our dogs had a wonderful time staying at this cozy cottage. The cottage is well-equipped, and the hot tub and fire pit were perfect for the chilly mornings and evenings in mid-April. It is secluded enough to feel like you are really getting away from it all, but not too far from the grocery store to quick run and pick something up. Hope to stay again soon!

Old Mine Cottage is less than three miles from the main highway, (US-211) yet it is a world away from the norm. If you want a quiet setting with beautiful views, Old Mine Cottage will more than meet your needs. We are located close to the downtown area of Luray, with its' quaint shopping, restaurants, and the iconic 'Pink' movie theater. We are within 10 miles of a wide variety of activities, such as Yogi Bear's Jellystone park, which provides mini-golf, an arcade for kids, and a water slide. The Caverns Country club is a very short drive up US-211 and provides a beautiful and competitive challenge for golfers of all skill levels. The Luray Caverns are a 5 mile drive away and are a world famous, must see attraction. If you like to bike you will find miles of paved country roads with very little traffic. If you like to hike there are miles of trails close by. If doing nothing sounds good you will be more than happy at the cottage as well! You can relax on the decks, enjoy the hot tub, the fire pit, the ten acres of property or the cottage itself. We bought the property in 2012 and have carefully returned it to the time period of its construction. It has been a labor of love and we believe that you will love it too. We welcome you to come and experience it.
