Murren: Mürren, a village rich in tradition, Illustrated in many historic photographs, the fascinating history of the beautiful Lauterbrunnen Valley, where the resorts of Murren and Wengen still reflect the former influence of early British tourism. Among the first enthusiastic visitors to the Lauterbrunnen Valley were such great names as Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Lord Byron, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. Mürren is regarded as the cradle of Alpine Ski Sport and the modern slalom was also born here, devised by Sir Arnold Lunn. Read about the construction of impressive mountain railways, and their significant role in the development of the valley. Read interesting and amusing anecdotes from the biographies of such important personalities as Ernst Gertsch, the 'Father of the Lauberhorn Downhill Ski Race'.
Winter Walking: Winter walking The villages of Mürren, Wengen,Lauterbrunnen, Gimmelwald, Stechelberg and Isenfluh all belong to a sunny winter walking wonderland, with well maintained trails through stunning Alpine scenery. Winter-walk to impressive vantage points or to the inviting terrace of a mountain hotel. Even fanatical skiers should leave their skis behind for once and discover the delights of one of the beautiful winter walking paths!
Ice Sports and Tobogganing: Ice sports and tobogganing The two artificial ice-rinks (indoor and outdoors) at the Alpine Sports Center in Mürren are perfect for ice skating. Tobogganing, as seen here on the fantastic forest run from Sulwald to Isenfluh, has a long tradition in the area. The familiar wooden toboggans are still often used as a means of transport on snow covered village streets and paths. Tobogganing remains a great favourite with all age groups.Toboggans and bobs can be hired at local sports shops. CURLING - take time to try your hand at this traditional wintersport. ICE SKATING - an openair ice-rink is always available (entrance free) in Murren.
We were really pleased with the apartment: it is
always good to arrive at an "internet" destination and find
accomodation that surpasses the photos and descriptions. It's more than
twenty years since we were last in Murren and the town continues to be as charming as ever. The apartment worked really
well for us and the rental office was very easy to deal with. Breakfast
on the balcony facing the valley and the Jungfrau was always a delight.
An excellent appartment in a typical Swiss village!!
The standard of the facilities provided exceeded all our expectations. There was even a "docking station" for our son's Ipod!!
Information supplied by the owner was accurate and it allowed us to start our holiday the minute we arrived. He always replied promtly to all my questions prior to departure.Three large double room with two bathrooms make it ideal for families and groups of up to six people. The appartment can take up to eight people with the additional two sleeping on the large mezzanine floor.
Getting to Murren can be a problem. We booked a flight and coach transfer with Inghams at a cost of about £240. The coach drops off at Lauterbrunnen at the base of the mountain and the cable car/train journey up to Murren is a further 20 CHF return. The flight is from Gatwick is convenient at 12.15hrs with about a 45 minute transfer from Berne airport to Murren.
The alternative is a flight to Geneva or Zurich with a train journey with several changes.Transfer times can be in excess of three hours this way.
The appartment is located very close to both the ski hire shop (Edy's), the cable railway up to the slopes and several excellent restaurants. Ski in and ski out is a real bonus. The local produce shops (meat, cheese, bread etc) are supplemented by a very well stocked Coop which is next door. The locals are very friendly and helpfull!!
The setting of Murren, looking over to the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau is stunning. The views for the appartment are equally stunning!! A visit to the "James Bond" rotating restaurant (Piz Gloria) is a definate must!! An "all you can eat" breakfast, with a glass of champagne, is served until approx 11.00hrs every day. Its not cheap at 33CHF/person but the ambiance and the views make it worthwhile.
The skiing area serves all levels. The pistes can be narrow in places but there are no crowds so no real problems. In a weeks skiing, we never queued at a chair once!!
Only down side is that Switzerland is currently expensive for Brits but we would definately return ourselves and would recommend it to all of our skiing friends!
We stayed in this beautiful property for 6 nights and could not have been more pleased! The views from the chalet are even better than the photos, with 270 degree views available, and every comfort of home is provided. The location within Murren is excellent for accessing all three cable cars/trains and being directly above the grocery store is extremely convenient. The owner is very responsive and easy to work with. Our family of 5 truly loved this chalet and highly recommend it to anyone considering a trip to Murren.
We've had 2 summer holidays at Chalet Steinbock. Our most recent stay was in September 2012 but we also spent a week in June 2006. The apartment is spacious and lies in a wonderful location. From the living room balcony the 3 peaks of the Jüngfrau are right in your face and you can also look down to the little village of Gimmelwald. The kitchen / dining room is very spacious and looks out over the main village street, more mountains and the Allmendhübel funicular - the base station is less than 100m from the apartment. The village supermarket is down 2 flights of stairs, its not expensive and it has most things you'll need for your stay - we treat it like its our pantry but you must remember that its closed on Sundays!
The apartment has everything you'll need without being precious - the beds are extremely comfortable, the shower is hot and strong, there are 2 TVs and 2 DVD players with a selection of DVDs, there are games for children and adults. The Jura automatic coffee machine was a real bonus - it was fantastic having hot frothy cappuccinos on demand.
A couple of points on Mürren itself: The village is quiet at night but I suspect no different to any other Swiss alpine village. We were there for alpine hikes, cows with bells, mountains, fresh air and jaw-dropping views.. Because its a car-free village means that children can roam about in safety - there's also a small field with a soccer net inside the village.
The location of Mürren, being on the other side of the valley to the Jungfrau means you get the spectacular views but the village escapes the hoards of tour groups that come for the day only to trek up to the top station of the Jungfrau and back down again. We thought this was a great positive too.
Finally, if the weather's good I recommend you start your day with a walk to Winteregg station (20-30min from Mürren) and have breakfast there.
I want to go back! We just returned from 17 days traveling around and hiking in Switzerland...and Murren and this apartment were an amazing 7 days of that trip. Perfect location. We had 3 couples and we had plenty of room. I cannot think of one thing negative, it was just a perfect place to say in a postcard village. If you want to spend a week feeling like you live in one of the most beautiful villages on earth, then this would be a great rental property for you too!
Traveled from California for a two week vacation visiting different locations around Switzerland in July. Spent one week at this property in Murren and wouldn't hesitate for a moment in recommending to close friends. Unbelieveable views from both back and front porches, peaceful, quiet and puts you right in the middle of the Swiss Alp experience. This apartment is tastefully decorated and equipped with everything you'll need, including for those who want to cook. There is a Coop market and ATM downstairs (although you'd never know it while upstairs). Plenty of quality restaurants in town and great access to local attractions. One aspect of this location that I really enjoyed was the lack of cars. Getting up to Murren, from Lauterbrunnen, at the base of the valley, you'll have two options, both of which make this location special. The first is to arrive in Lauterbrunnen and walk across the street and get on the gondola for the ride up. You then immediately board a small train and take the ten minute ride into Murren. The other option is to arrive in Lauterbrunnen and get on the bus for the ten minute ride to the top of the Lauterbrunnen Valley and board the gondola for the ride up the Gimmelwald and onto Murren. Both of these options leave you with a level five minute walk to the apartment and this is when you really begin to appreciate the lack of any traffic. As you walk along, admiring the mind-blowing scenery, the gardens, the local architecture, you'll begin to realize that you've made a great choice even before arriving at the apartment. Can't wait to get back here for a winter visit. By the way, dealing with the owners in terms of wiring money and arranging contract, went very well.
After 4 skiing holidays, this was definately the best accommodation we've had. Listing description was spot on, chalet was actually more stunning than on pictures. Good customer service from owner, property was clean, well-maintained and very well equipped, especially the stunning kitchen which only lacks a microwave. We loved the extra large wine glasses and also the coffee machine! More than enough linen & towels. You don't need to take anything. Also enjoyed the DVD player and 2 TVs as well as all the games. The apartment is very spacious and the location great, just above the bank and supermarket, opposite the ski hire shop and very close to restaurants as well as Allmendhubel lift station and ski school. Will definately recommend to friends and relatives. Kids loved the bob run. We had supper at Steiger Stubli and Hotel Jungfrau and would recommend them both. Negatives about Murren are that there is little or no night life and few shops. However as a family on a skiing holiday this was not an issue at all.
