Good value

  • 4 of 5

My partner and I stayed for 10 days and were very comfortable in the apartment. It is very close to a pebble beach which has a beach bar (with the best beer prices in the whole of Croatia!) so we ended spending most of our days on the beach. Milutin was very helpful leading up to our stay and easy to contact. His mother was staying in the ground floor section of their building while we were there and was very kind to us with help and advice. We are travelling through Europe so needed to use her washing machine a few times which was no problem. The apartment is spacious, comfortable bed, clean and the kitchen suited our needs. Really good value overall. Glad we chose Komiza over Vis town too, much better village/town. Other highlights of our trip was hitting a quad bike for the day, visiting Stiniva Cove and going to Bisevo island to see the Blue Cave and spending the afternoon at Porat beach.

Excellent location

  • 3 of 5

Lovely apartment in the gorgeous town of Komiza. Very well located - two minutes walk from the main restaurants and shops and another two minutes (in the opposite directions) to a lovely little beach (in the photos). Slight disappointment in that the barbecue and kayak weren't available to use because it was "too windy" throughout our week stay (despite courtyard being well sheltered?). Also the patio area is not private and overlooked by several other apartments, so not ideal. However, the apartment was clean, had everything we needed and it was absolute bliss being able to listen to the waves crashing while falling asleep. Easy enough to get to (ferry from split and bus from vis, all well timed to co-ordinate)

Vis is the out most inhabited island of the Adriatic sea, some 50 km from the Croatian coast (2h by a car-ferry from the largest Dalmatian city of Split). Due to its very recent and moderated tourist expansion prioritising natural, architectural and ecosystem preservation Vis is in many tourist magazines designated among the most protected and authentic tourist locations in Europe. In deed the islands land, water, flora and fauna is to an impressive extent kept as it was centuries before. Vis island and Komiza (Komiza has ~2000 permanent settlers) on the other hand offer everything that a modern visitor might need, from reliable road and sea transport, good telecommunications, bank service as a EU member, grocery stores, restaurants, caffees, bakeries, small green market, medical assistance, various sport activities from most popular ones to more demanding sports as sea diving, big game fishing, paragliding, cave exploration, mountain-biking...Komiza is also a yachting port with all modern infrastructural support. The climate on the island is typically Mediterranean with long, hot and dry summers and short and mild winters. Sea temperature permits swimming typically from May to October.

Dominant architectural impression in Komiza is a traditional Adriatic stone house. Thick stone walls give a pleasant isolation and shade inside the houses during long summers and stunning longevity of the whole town core. Most of the accommodation on the island is based on this traditional housing.

Some of the characteristic things that we strongly recommend when in Komiza:

- Beaches just in front of the house and in Komiza are perfectly placed for everyday use (jump in the sea in front of the house before the morning coffee or for the evening splash) but it is also worthwhile visiting some of the unusual beaches around the island, sandy beaches, some hidden, some stone beaches, (if needed car or boat transport can be found in town)

- Blue cave on the Bisevo island

- Some of the traditional or even domestic type restaurants

- Island products like vine, olive oil, salted fish (anchovies)...

- Visit fresh fish market early in the morning, by directly from fishermen and make on the barbecue in our garden.

- Our kayak for two persons is beautiful way to see Komiza from the sea and row around Komiza coast and nearby beaches.

- If you are diving maybe you know for Vis underwater attractions but there are numerous other sport possibilities. Kids who like sports play every afternoon football, basketball and other sports on Komiza sport playground. There are tennis courts, bike roads in the island nature, try very popular Mediterranean type of bowling,

- Big game fishing international competition is an attraction for participants as well as viewers

- Several tourist agencies organize visits on the island or on the smaller surrounding islands excursions related to nature (caves, wine yards, bays), history (antique, middle age or from the modern period), or even one day visit to a very popular Hvar island/town

- You can enjoy open-air cinema in Komiza, including one children movie each day.

- Throughout the year there are a quality cultural happening like concerts, theatre expositions...Visit some of the churches in Komiza.

- Younger visitors like open air, beach café/disco/club with evening concerts, dj-s..

Vis archipelago consists of several smaller islands like Biševo, Sveti Andrija, Jabuka, Brusnik and Palagruža and a number of islets, reefs and rocks. The closest islands to Vis are Hvar (18 km – 1 hour by a ferry), Korčula (33 km) and Lastovo.

On the opposite sides of the island there are two small towns - Vis (founded on the remains of the antique settlement Issa) and Komiža. Vis city with its Renaissance and Baroque palaces, stone houses and churches from 16th and 17th century is a picturesque place. Komiža town is a traditional old stone city and Adriatic's most famous fisherman port. The interior of the island with hills and valleys, vineyards and olive-grows is full of small villages and settlements. The 76 nautical miles long, indented shore it abounds in sandy and pebbly beaches, rocks, sea and mountain caves.

Vis archipelago has been identified as biodiversity hot-spot. The island of Vis is also rich in history, and ancient sites and ruins (Illyrians, Greeks (IV BC) and Romans). Different ceramics artefacts, amphorae, the remains of the therme (I BC) wall remains and mosaics can be seen on site or in the Archaeological museum. Due to Yugoslav Army's presence (up to 1992) Vis was closed for visits of any foreigners. This 50 years long isolation, ironically, helped in keeping the island as one of the most pristine place in the entire Mediterranean.
