“Quinta dos Trigos”- ideally situated within “la Ria Formosa” natural reserve between Santa Luzia and Tavira in the Western Algarve (and well away from the crowds), is, above all, a special and unique place. The 250m2 natural swimming pool blends harmoniously with its surroundings, is a real “biotope” and without doubt a major attraction of the property that will invite you to swim in its clear waters free from all chemical products (it is cleaned naturally). Once refreshed, you could simply watch the dragonflies dancing over the water lilies or you may choose to relax in the hammock shaded by the 100 year old olive trees listening to the waterfalls and the birdsong that fills the air. Otherwise you may prefer to stroll in the orchard and help yourself, depending on the season, to oranges, figs, apricots and many other exotic fruits.
This old farmhouse, recently fully renovated with eco materials, has lots of charm with its traditional high wood and cane ceiling. With 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms it is ideal for 8 people, but does have 4 extra beds that can be used (for occupation exceeding 8 persons, an extra € 150/per person/week is charged). It is also particularly well laid out to accommodate 2 families who wish to spend their holidays together.
Fully equipped, with many high quality appliances, the house offers all comforts. In summer, and for most of spring and autumn, you can barbecue on the terrace. In winter, the wall-radiators and wood-burning stove allow you to spend cosy evenings.
Several bikes are at your disposal - free of charge of course.
Wow wow wow! The Quinta looks amazing on the photos but the reality is even more wonderful. The house itself is luxurious but in a friendly and homely way and is well equipped with everything you need including plastic crockery which was great for our 2 young boys. Heike and Peter who look after the quinta were so friendly and welcoming and took great delight in seeing our faces as they showed us around! The grounds are just stunning and go on and on! The kid's pool was great for our boys and the bonus was that it's just next to the railway line which for 2 young train enthusiasts was perfect! The BBQ area is brilliant and we loved relaxing around the outdoor 'chill out' area with the hammocks. Then there's the table football, the table tennis table and the orange orchard, fig tree, lemon tree and peach trees. Seeing our boys picking fruit from the trees and enjoying it was amazing! Then the (gated) section with the natural swimming pool-this is where it goes beyond words-just amazing! The boys couldn't believe they saw a frog while they were in the pool and the bats diving and swooping at sunset to the soundtrack of frogs will stay in my memory for a long long time. Then there's also the trampoline which again the boys loved. We cannot wait to go back again-the surrounding area is wonderful and there is so much to do but often we didn't actually leave the place (only to walk over the level crossing to the local supermarket to pick up supplies for the BBQ...!) best holiday ever, hands down!
Just brilliant - the owners & caretakers have thought of everything! It was a lovely week with fresh orange juice from the trees, swimming in the pools, having bbqs, relaxing on the hammocks - just lovely.
We tried to find things wrong with it, but all we could muster up was no handles on the mugs... There was literally EvERYThING we and Our family needed. Would definitely go back - not even to see around it but just to relax in this house. It's lovely.
We have just spent a fantastic week at the Quinta - two families of four adults and four kids, with grandparents staying nearby and visiting daily. (Al fresco dining for 10 posing no difficulty)
The 'Caretakers' of the property were very welcoming, extremely helpful and on hand if needed.
The Quinta is an oasis of calm and tranquility (even with nearby railway crossing and sunset frog chorus!) Situated just off the beaten track, with it's own orange/lemon orchard, a mature garden and a variety of plantlife, it offers both welcome shade as well as lots of sunbathing spots.
The house itself has been beautifully renovated, tastefully decorated and is plenty spacious for eight.(The kitchen is also well above average in terms of equipment, utensils etc ..)
The smaller pool beside the house is great
(especially for younger kids) and the 'natural' pool at the far end of the orchard - complete with mini waterfall, frogs, fish, dragonflies, birds and your genuine lily pads - just has to be experienced first hand .....
Oh - and there's the trampoline, the table tennis table, the table football ... not to mention the hammocks, sunloungers, bicycles, pool/beach toys, chess board, wood stove (unused, but still a feature!) and no less than three outside 'deluge' showers ....Need I continue ??
My 7 year old launched himself into O/J production (aforementioned orchard) and the holiday mantra of "train coming!" is firmly lodged in my memory along with numerous other delightful memories ... we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and haven't relaxed like that for too long !!
Finally, Tavira is the local town easily accessible by bike or on foot and is a lovely, laid back place to while away a few hours pottering about visiting cafes, churches and generally doing some more chilling a little more !
PS The municipal market and camera obscura a must in my book ..
"We had a great stay in the Algarves in large part due to this house rental and its lovely surroundings. The Quinta is a recently renovated farm with an orange orchard as a backyard. We were 8 in all at the Quinta, 2 couples plus four kids, and never felt at a loss for space. The huge natural swimming pool was a godsend as the kids couldn’t get enough, so I managed to get quite a bit of reading, snoozing and jogging done during our stay (lots of back roads suited for nice runs). We also took advantage of the outside terrace in the evenings for some quite memorable seafood BBQs.
I highly recommend the place.
nous avons passé une belle semaine dans cette quinta, qui est conforme à l'annonce. La piscine naturelle est un endroit paisible. La maison est très bien agencée; Nous avovns apprécié les jus d'orange frais tous les matins!!! seul bémol, le bruit du train.
Nous avons passé une semaine avec nos deux enfants et un couple d'ami et leur enfant et ce fut parfait. L'endroit est vraiment conforme aux photos. Et la maison est super bien équipée. Un vrai petit paradis sur terre. On peut s'y rendre les yeux fermés.
“Quinta dos Trigos” is located on the edge of Tavira in the Santa Luiza countryside, along a quiet unsealed road (easily passable for cars), 500m from “Ecovia” the 214 kilometres bike path of the Algarve which joins Sagres to Vila Real de Santo António and which is almost free of motorised traffic. Access to the property is easy, only 1km from Tavira railway station (the line passes close to the house) and 5mins from an interchange on the A22 motorway which is 30mins from Faro airport.

In the area, you should visit Tavira, reputed to be the nicest town in the Algarve, and will also be charmed by the nearby fishing village of Santa Luiza with its many restaurants. The magnificent beaches of the Ile de Tavira, described by Lonely Planet’s “Travel with Children” Guide to be one of the world’s top ten beaches for families with children, are only 2km away, and are easily accessible by car, bike or by the small local railway that serves them. Other leisure opportunities nearby include golf (5km) and horse riding, and the area is an ornithological paradise. The Spanish border is 30km away and it is easy to drive to Seville in 90 minutes. The Western Algarve (Sagres and Cabo São Vincente) is also easily reached by car in 90 minutes.
