Overview

About the property

Main House (sleeps 6-7) w/ Guest House Rental Option (sleeps 2 Adults/2 Kids)

This beautiful old adobe hacienda is the real deal with some rooms over 100 years old, featuring authentic hand plastered mud walls, wide pine plank floors and original hand hewn vigas (beams). The living room floor has its original mud floor which has been painted and sealed to a hard finish. Set under large cottonwoods that shade the compound, the house lies along the Acequia Madre del Rio Hondo, the venerable 'mother ditch' that runs down off Wheeler Peak and provides water to the communities of Des Montes and Upper Hondo. The Main House sleeps up to 8 people. The Guest House is available for an additional nightly fee in order to accommodate up to 2 adults and 2 small children. Both houses together can accommodate up to 12 people. Across the street from Casa de Musica is the ditch trailhead, a lovely 45 minute walk that takes you along the rim of the Arroyo Seco 'llano' (high plain), with dramatic views of the Valdez Valley on one side and the sweet sounds of the rushing waters of the Acequia on the other side. It is the perfect morning walk before you gear up for the National Forest Trails just minutes further up the road towards Taos Ski Valley.

The Main House is 2000 square feet and sleeps up to 8 people. It has a formal dining room for entertaining, a large, inviting sunken living room with a kiva fireplace, 2 well-separated bedrooms with comfortable King and Queen beds, 2 full bathrooms with Talavera tile, and a bedroom/den with a comfortable foldout Queen size futon bed with memory foam mattress topper as well as a "full" size platform bed with a comfortable mattress. There is also a long single couch/daybed in the living room that can be converted to a single bed. If your party consists of more than 8 people, or you want to spread out, then we offer the Guest House option that can sleep up to two more adults and two smaller children for an additional $100 per night including an additional $85 cleaning fee.The Main House kitchen is large and well equipped with dishes/utensils, 2 ovens, gas stove, refrigerator, dishwasher, toaster, coffeemaker, blender, and high quality pots and pans. The entire compound is on a whole house water filtration system at the well-site, and the kitchen has an additional high quality under-the-counter-system for further water filtration. The attached Guest Apartment is available for an additional nightly fee of $100/night. It is capable of sleeping 2 adults and 2 smaller sized children. It is 2 stories with a separate entry and is 700 square feet. It offers lovely tree-filled views upstairs with a comfortable California King sized bed, full bathroom with Talavera tile and a sunny, open living area. Downstairs it offers a small efficiency kitchen (microwave, fridge, sink, coffeemaker) with 2 comfortable built-in smaller kid-sized beds with colorful cotton sleeping bags for a "campout" feel. All beds in both houses have cotton bedding and we use eco-friendly cleaning products wherever possible at Casa de Musica. The Main House and Guest House have good Wifi reception in every room and there is a widescreen TV in the den in the Main House which is set up for wireless streaming from your computer and also for DVD viewing. The TV does not offer cable or any local channels. There is a diverse collection of family oriented DVD's and music CD's in the Main House for your use and we suggest you bring your own supplemental favorites for the kids. There is no TV in the Guest House. There is a telephone for incoming or local outgoing calls, or you may use a prepaid phone card for outgoing long distance calls. As with many areas in Northern New Mexico our Taos cell phone reception is inconsistent. The house has a garage with remote control opener and plenty of room for one vehicle and your ski equipment There is also ample parking in the driveway.

There is a fire pit and a charcoal fired grill on the patio and plenty of comfortable chairs for lounging with friends and family. You can stroll out into the orchard, take a nap in the hammock, have a picnic lunch under the plum trees, and if the season is right help yourself to the apples, apricots and wild plums. We are located in a beautiful, quiet neighborhood with wonderful neighbors, however we do have BEARS in the Fall. The previous owner was an elderly woman who installed bars on the windows for this reason. They are black bears and are extremely shy, but in the Fall months they sometimes will traverse the Village at night looking for fruit in the orchards, bird feeders to raid, and accessible trash cans. For this reason we have left the bars on the windows and always ask that people not leave food out on the patio overnight during the Fall months. We have decorated Casa de Musica with our personal collection of antique Native American and Persian rugs, traditional Mexican Saltillo blankets, and beautiful Native American art. We are sharing our extensive library collection of books on topics from local wildflowers and birds to Native art and architecture, plus a large collection of fiction. There is plenty of great bike riding right out the driveway and we can provide several cruiser bikes for your use. This property offers a very unique, peaceful getaway for anyone who loves being outdoors and wants to enjoy all that this beautiful area has to offer.

We hope you enjoy it as much as we do!

About Delia Castillo

Eliza Gilkyson is a well known folk singer-songwriter who spent many years living and performing in Northern New Mexico before relocating to Austin Texas, where she enjoys a successful career as an international recording artist and touring performer. She purchased Casa de Musica in 2013 to reconnect with her beloved New Mexico roots and escape the Texas heat and fast pace. Her intention with Casa de Musica is to share a space for artists, writers and musicians as well as those who want an outdoors experience and cultural stimulation. For several weekends in the summer she hosts Casa de Musica Songwriting Workshops with well-known songwriters such as John Gorka and Kevin Welch, where songwriters of all ages get a hands-on and intensive writing experience. She also performs in Northern New Mexico and Taos on an ongoing basis.

Delia Castillo purchased this house in 2013

Why Delia Castillo chose New Mexico

Eliza searched many years throughout northern New Mexico for the perfect sanctuary and as soon as she saw Casa de Musica she knew she had found her New Mexico home. The house is no cookie cutter 'Santa Fe style' faux adobe. It is authentic down to its sealed mud living room floor, hand hewn beams, mud plastered walls and wide pine plank floorboards. Eliza liked the attached apartment because she thought it offered more options for her songwriting classes and possible vacation renters. She loved the old orchard and is working hard to get it back into thriving condition, as well as joining the New Mexico Acequia association and activating her water rights. The water running through the front of the property was another reason she loved the place because it makes the grounds more lush, the trees larger and shadier, and attracts more birds and wildlife. You can hear the rushing Acequia out the windows in the front rooms of the house, and that makes the 3rd bedroom/den one of her favorite rooms at Casa de Musica.

Eliza fell in love with the master bedroom which gets beautiful morning sunlight and looks out into the far pasture where she can hear the coyotes at night when the windows are open. She also appreciated the Mexican Talavera tile in the bathrooms that add to the old world 'hacienda' feel of the home.

The real 'deal clincher' for her in buying the property was the 'ditch trail' across the street, because it gave her the chance to take a 45 minute walk daily without driving anywhere, and the view from it was so dramatic down into the Valdez Valley, along with the wildflowers, rushing Acequia water and birds. Once she walked down that trail she put in her offer!

What makes this house unique

- Trail head across the street.

- Large shaded and fully walled-in patio with comfortable seating, fire pit and grill.

- Well separated bedrooms for privacy.

- Wi-Fi in every room.

- Producing apple orchard.

- Easy access to the Village of Arroyo Seco

- Equidistant to Taos Ski Valley and Town of Taos.

- Large comfortable kitchen.

- Sunken living room with small 'performance' area.

- Authentic architecture and old world ambiance.

Notes:
One of the best things about staying in this area is the access it offers to the outdoors. You can literally walk across the road and take a 45 minute hike along the Acequia. You can bike, walk, ski, snowboard, kayak, raft or climb your way around! There is so much to enjoy about the outside in Northern New Mexico. The second best thing has to be the amazing culture and art in this area. You will not see a more beautiful pueblo than Taos Pueblo. Arroyo Seco Village & Taos are both full of amazing art galleries and shops. Don't forget the tasty New Mexican food! Take the time to go out and enjoy some red or green chile enchiladas or rellenos. There are an abundance of restaurants that offer foods for every palate and budget. Enjoy your stay!

This is a charming, comfortable home surrounded by the peaceful beauty of New Mexico.

  • 5 of 5

We had a fabulous time here. There were 8 of us and we had plenty of room. We loved the charm of the old adobe architecture and were fascinated by the history of the home and the surrounding area. The trails just off of the property offer nice walks and stunning views. It's a great location as we were close to Taos in one direction and hikes in the ski valley in the other. It's difficult for me to imagine a better place to stay than Casa de Musica.

awesome

  • 5 of 5

When we first started looking for a place in Taos to handle a large group, this place caught my eye because of the price. It turned out to be more than we had hoped for.

We had 6 kids ranging from 9 months to 12 years. The closed in court yard, the ability to close the front gate and the back meadow with the orchard was perfect for them to play, climb trees, ride bikes and run with no worries.

The views were awesome and the old hacienda style home was an experience to remember.

Thank you for opening up this home for others to enjoy.

Rustic Taos needs attention

  • 3 of 5

If you are looking for a true get away, this might be the place. Quiet adobe along a road to the ski area with spectacular view. Limited cell phone service on a variety of providers. WiFi in the house is hit or miss probably due to adobe walls. The TV listed in the amenities simply did not exist. Bring your own blow dryer. If you use the guest house, be aware that there is an additional charge in the fine print. Discovered that the guest house shower leaks into the bedroom in the main house below. In communication, we found out about the extra charge for the guest house. Says sleeps 12, but a couple of those must be children. Made our deposit and put the final payment due date on our calendar. 2 weeks before the due date, started receiving messages that final payment was due, some of these coming in the middle of the night. Upon sending the final payment, received a "welcome" message saying we would be contacted with access instructions a few days before our stay. I had to call the morning we were to arrive to get the code for the door. It is a beautiful old home that offers a peaceful retreat. Just be aware it might not be exactly as expected.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review and for taking the time to genuinely share your experience staying at the house. It helps us to accommodate our future guests. I would recommend that all travelers read the details listed on any site to avoid misunderstandings about a property. In addition, I always give my direct phone contact information to all our guests and highly encourage them to call me with ANY questions or issues. We always want our guests to enjoy their stay and feel well taken care of. Aside from spotty cell phone/wi-fi service, which is common in all small mountain towns, I am responding to the issues you listed below: • We send a Welcome Packet via email at time of booking, which also indicates there is a "Renter's Guide Book" located in the home. The Guide Book would have explained where the TV is located (in the extra room off kitchen inside armoire). • There was a blow dryer for guest use in the master bathroom drawer, but someone may have taken it. We will replace immediately. • We were unaware of any leaks in the Guest House and it has not been mentioned before. If we had been informed of this during your stay we would have responded immediately. We are fixing the issue now. • VRBO does not allow you to add an individual listing charge for a Guest House on a property. It is an unfortunate flaw which forces us to add that clause in the wording on our site. If you read the details on our listing page, you will see the Guest House charge mentioned many, many times so we can be transparent in our rates and fees. We are sorry this was not clear. • The details on our page clearly indicate the Guest House downstairs bedroom is for small children only. • VRBO is an automated website that emails out payment reminders. We have no control over what time of day that occurs.

The house and guest quarters were warm and comfortable. Lots of space for the children and adults.

  • 5 of 5

Our family was in town for the New Year holiday and our wedding. This home was perfect for us to relax after skiing and after the wedding. There were games for the children to play and lots of space for them to spread out. The only complaint from the children was that there wasn't a TV to watch movies on or the football game. Other than that, everyone enjoyed their time there. The location is right between town and the ski valley so getting baaround was easy. Should we ever need a large space for the family or a smaller space (guest house) for our immediate family of 3, we will be back.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for the great review Noelani - we're so happy you and your family enjoyed the house! Incidentally, there is a TV in the house and a selection of movies for kids and adults. It is located in the extra bedroom/den off of kitchen, but it is in a closed armoire so it can be easily missed ;-) Hope to have you back again! Delia

Casa de Musica is located just a 5 minute drive or easy bike ride to the charming artist community of Arroyo Seco with its shops, nightlife, cafes and restaurants. The historic town of Taos is a quick 15 minute drive. The Taos Ski Valley is just 10 miles further up the road. The area offers a wide range of activities for individuals, couples and families including hiking, biking, rock climbing, river rafting, kayaking, horseback riding, skiing/snowboarding, golf, tennis, spas, live music, beautiful art, shopping, amazing food (try some native green or red chile dishes), historical sites (Taos Pueblo is not to be missed). Home to the Tiwa Tribe of Taos Pueblo, the area is one of the first areas inhabited and settled by Spanish explorers and settlers, and conveys an historic aesthetic, with its adobe architecture, ancient acequia systems, old orchards and outbuildings. Painters and photographers have always praised the light and incredible views found in Northern New Mexico.

No matter what time of year you visit Taos, there is so much to do, from strolling around the plaza and visiting the many shops, galleries, or museums, the Mable Dodge Lujan house, Taos Pueblo. The focus is on Native American history, art and culture and there is an abundance of that everywhere you turn.

For outdoor enthusiasts, there are guided river rafting adventures on the Rio Grande, horseback riding, hiking , and mountain biking (3 bike shops in the town of Taos). The Taos ski Valley operates year round, so the lift is perfect for fall leaf viewing or a fun day excursion into the mountains.

There is plenty of nightlife in Taos, with its many restaurants and microbreweries and the famous Taos Inn where locals and tourists gather to hear music and make friends.
