Take a step into this once thriving General Store and be amazed by the original elevator that once brought goods from the basement storage up to the store level. Though not functioning anymore, this historic architectural element has been frozen in time during the latest remodel.
Originally from the St. Louis area, I lived in Petersburg from 1998 to 2013. The first time I drove into town looking for a home to buy, the 'Old Petersburg Operahouse' was for sale. Having majored in music many years ago, the old building sent out a siren call for me to buy it! I've been buying and rehabbing in town ever since. In 2011 I opened The Cottage for vacationers. It was a very slow start, and I wondered if it had been the right decision. But soon the Creation Museum guests started arriving--I love my guests! What a joy to interact with these Christian families (many with lots of children :), who are kind and thoughtful...and take care of my home! It was obvious right away that a vacation home offers a much-needed alternative to hotel rooms...most of which cannot accommodate the larger families. Also, the ability to cook your own meals instead of eating out can save money. (And doing a little laundry during vacation can rescue you from a mountain of clothes when you get home...;-) I hope you enjoy the adventure of staying in this historic general store...
All 22 of us loved it! My wife and I, our 5 children, their spouses and all the grandchildren were here. We had a great time visiting the Creation Museum, and the Ark; both were amazing, inspiring and very enjoyable. The "General Store" was perfect with 6 bedrooms, 4 baths, laundry, and great kitchen/dining/living areas; great for lots of family meals and fun times. Also enjoyed were the Perfect North Slopes, Cincinnati Children's Museum, Carousel, parks along the riverfront and Skyline Chili. We would definitely recommend this to others!
This is probably the cleanest and nicest place we have ever stayed. Deborah has gone above and beyond in preparing the General Store for her guest. Clean, beautifully decorated, spacious, and so much more than a hotel. My family has stayed in all but one of her properties and this is our favorite. There is no way that we could go back to staying in a hotel when we come to visit the museum and Ark. One would not be disappointed by staying at the General Store!
Wonderful place to stay while we visited the Creation Museum. Definitely would stay again
The photos don't adequately express the spaciousness of the place. We rented both floors, they are connected by an indoor stairway when both are rented. We hosted our family of five couples and 12 grandkids. Having two floors gave a space and separated space for kids to play and adults to congregate.
While the place is not formally ADA compliant it worked very well for our adult, quadriplegic daughter and her family. With her own portable ramp she was able to get onto the main floor. the spaciousness and wide hallways made it fully accessible for her power chair. The bathroom doors were wide enough for the power chair and a plastic lawn chair worked for a shower chair.
It would have been nice to have one more room set up for a married couple, but nothing to complain about.
Overall this is ideal for a large family gathering where there is space to congregate, eat, play games, watch TV and still retreat to ones own quiet space.
The small town of Petersburg makes for quiet walks. While attractions are near by, we found time together in the General Store to be what our family needed more than distractions.
Deborah and her crew do an amazing job of making the place absolutely clean and well furnished.
This home is clean, decorated beautifully and had exactly what we needed for a relaxing time for our two families. Owner is prompt with communicating. Would book this home again. Already recommended to friends.
We had a group of 14 visiting the Ark of encounter and Creation museum. We really enjoyed our stay. The pictures on the website don't do any justice. The house is really spacious and there is a tv in every room with Netflix. For cleanliness, we give 10/10. No one had anything to complain about. Deborah was very fast with her response and questions. We are so glad that we chose this place. Will defintley recommend this place to our friends and family.
