Take a step into this once thriving General Store and be amazed by the original elevator that once brought goods from the basement storage up to the store level. Though not functioning anymore, this historic architectural element has been frozen in time during the latest remodel.
Originally from the St. Louis area, I lived in Petersburg from 1998 to 2013. The first time I drove into town looking for a home to buy, the 'Old Petersburg Operahouse' was for sale. Having majored in music many years ago, the old building sent out a siren call for me to buy it! I've been buying and rehabbing in town ever since. In 2011 I opened The Cottage for vacationers. It was a very slow start, and I wondered if it had been the right decision. But soon the Creation Museum guests started arriving--I love my guests! What a joy to interact with these Christian families (many with lots of children :), who are kind and thoughtful...and take care of my home! It was obvious right away that a vacation home offers a much-needed alternative to hotel rooms...most of which cannot accommodate the larger families. Also, the ability to cook your own meals instead of eating out can save money. (And doing a little laundry during vacation can rescue you from a mountain of clothes when you get home...;-) I hope you enjoy the adventure of staying in this historic general store...
This place is over the top! We have stayed in many VRBOs, B&Bs and AirBNBs... this home is immaculate, cozy and comfortable. Deborah was most helpful in making arrangements as our numbers changed several times, always getting back with a prompt reply. Also, when we tripped a breaker (don't recommend two hairdryers going at the same time in downstair bedrooms lol!), Wanda came right over and remedied the situation :) Our group of five adults found this a refuge after full days of Ark Encounter, Creation Museum, BB Dinner Cruise and C.S. Lewis "The Reluctant Convert" show and lots of sightseeing... even cooking dinner at home several nights. We feel so blessed to have found such a gem! Would highly recommend to anyone that wants something above and beyond just another "hotel" experience that can accommodate a small group to a large number being able to stay at the same location. Thanks again, Deborah and Wanda... from your Texas guests <3
We came here with our small group from church, 18 people, and rented the up and downstairs. Couldn't have been happier! Plenty of room, very clean. Beautifully decorated and very comfortable
We really enjoyed our family time together in this beautiful and very clean house. From the moment we arrived we enjoyed the spaciousness of both floors. It gave our large family room to spread out. It was located in a very small quiet town by the Ohio river. Our family felt safe to have walks in the evening after long days spent out exploring the Zoo, Aquarium , Ark Encounter and the Creation Museum. Again we had a great time and would strongly suggest staying here if you like a more calm quiet country setting.
Our family was thrilled with the "General Store" vacation home. It was very large and spacious, gorgeous, immaculate and a perfect place for our family to gather and relax. There was no detail left undone - we had everything we needed! The community is very nice and we felt safe during our stay. I would whole-heartedly recommend any of Deborah's properties!!!
Our extended family was split between the Victorian and General Store, in order to visit both the Creation Museum and lifesize Ark. Four families - 19 people - were comfortably situated in this fabulous guesthouse. The reaction to the spacious living-dining room area downstairs from everyone upon arrival was, "Wow!" and it easily accommodated our shared meals. High ceilings, beautifully appointed, and clean, clean, clean! Kids loved the wide staircase going upstairs, and though we didn't use it, the upstairs living room is quite charming as well. Finally, my communication with Deborah setting up our visit was wonderful - she is super prompt with her responses and so pleasant. We are looking forward to our next General Store visit!
The pictures of the property do not do the house justice. We were there for three days in June and the property manager was right there when an issue arised with a smoke detector beeping. The Wifi and laundry rooms were a big help with our big family. Would recommend this house to any one looking for a wonderful relaxing vacation.
