Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday home in Bracey - Cozy, Lakefront Log Cabin

Charming 3 Bedroom, 3 Full Bath Home With Panoramic Lakefront Views

Welcome to Hobo Haven! Hobo Haven, our family-built home named after our beloved dog Hobo, is a charming log cabin located on two acres on Lake Gaston in Bracey, Virginia. Our three story, three bedroom, three bath home is a classic log cabin, featuring plank hard wood floors, wood beam ceilings, and, of course, beautiful hand-hewn log walls.

Our home boasts three covered and one uncovered decks, all with beautiful views of the lake. It also features a large screened-in porch, perfect for eating lunch on a warm summer day. These covered outside spaces allow you to enjoy the outdoors even in the case of bad weather. The fully equipped, open concept kitchen is ideal for preparing any meal, and features a dinning room table with seating for ten, perfect for a lovely family dinner. Even on a cool autumn or winter day, cozy up next to one of two beautiful stone fireplaces, one located in the kitchen, the other in the second story family room area. Despite being a rustic log cabin, Hobo Haven still has standard modern luxuries we’ve come to expect, including four 32-inch flat screen TVs, cable, telephone, air conditioning, and heat.

Bedroom/sleeping Details:

• Master Bedroom (Second Floor)—1 double bed, with access to outside covered deck

• Bedroom One—(Third Floor Loft)—1 double bed, one twin bed

• Bedroom Two—(Third Floor)—1 double bed, with direct access to Jack and Jill bathroom

• One high quality, queen, blowup mattress is included. There is plenty of floor space available, if you’d like to bring additional air mattresses.

• Two full couches, one loveseat

Public boat launch is minutes away, both driving and by water, at the Holly Grove Marina. With one boat and two Jet Ski lifts there is more than enough room for your boats to be secured and protected from the elements. A huge sun deck above the lifts provides amazing, panoramic water views and great sunning opportunities. Water depth off the dock is about 14 feet, plenty deep for diving, swimming, floating and fishing. Water depth at the steps going into the water is between 3-4 feet deep, making it easy for children and pets to get in and out of the water. Please keep in mind, this rental does not include a boat. Boat rentals are available on the lake.

Nearby attractions and conveniences:

• 2 minutes away from Holly Grove Marina (food, drink, bait/tackle, boat launch, gas, air, etc.)

• 20 minutes away from Food Lion, ABC store, Wal-Mart and several fast food and more upscale dining options—all located in South Hill, Virginia

• 7 minutes away from Rosemont of Virginia Winery

About Gail Cox or Jennifer Thomas

I'm new to VRBO, but I'm excited for the opportunity to share the home that brings my family and me so much joy with you! I'm from Richmond, Virginia where I still live today. I have two adult daughters and am currently fostering a 5 year old child, which keeps me very busy!

Why Gail Cox or Jennifer Thomas chose Lake Gaston

This home was built by my father who was in construction. My ex-husband and I, as well as other family members, also helped in building the home. My daughter also just had her wedding at our home, which was very special and fun for all of us. For these reasons, the home has a very special place in my heart. It's been a place where my family and I have made many happy memories, and where we'll continue to in years to come. It's a very relaxing retreat from my busy life, and I hope it will be for you as well.

What makes this house unique

What I love most about this home, aside from the sentimental aspects of it, is the unique log cabin style. It's not every day that you see a true log cabin, but this is it. I love the way the sun glistens off the wood and tin roof on a bright day. I love the vaulted, wood beam ceilings. I love the decks surrounding the house providing panoramic views of the water. I love the brick walkways that contribute to the rustic feel of the home. There's nothing that I enjoy more than sitting on the porch swing, drinking a cup of hot tea while looking out onto the peaceful lake.

Great Weekend Getaway

  • 5 of 5

We had an excellent time in this cozy cabin. We had everything we needed for a great stay and the views over the lake are so relaxing. The owners were quick to respond to pre-trip inquires and provided all the information we needed to navigate around the house. We look forward to coming again!

Great weekend getaway with fabulous views!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I rented "Hobo Haven" for a weekend getaway to celebrate our 31st wedding anniversary. Upon arriving I knew we had picked the right spot. The grounds are wonderful, secluded, and laid out to make the most out of every area. From the woods to walk in, the fire pit area, the gazebo, to the dock, each area worked great for us. The house was cozy, with the rich history of craftsmanship evident everywhere you looked. Gail and Jennifer were wonderful and very accommodating to work with. We have already talked about possibly booking for the holidays if available.

Charming cabin, wonderful water, terrific fenced-in yard for the dogs, too many spiders

  • 4 of 5

We visited for 5 days in late September, and spent more time indoors than we wished because it rained... and rained. The property is well-described - the log cabin is very charming - and quirky- inside and out. Ceilings are low and dark on the first level. There are many doors, porches and decks to get outside and enjoy the lake. Our two dogs LOVED both swimming off the dock stairs and running loose in the fenced in yard. The amount of lake frontage is remarkable. Inside we had plenty of room. Bathrooms were fine, as were the bedrooms. We really appreciated the offer to use what was on hand in the kitchen (spices, condiments, etc.). The kitchen was well stocked for cooking and serving meals. As some others have noted, the light switch and outlet locations can be quirky, but we figured them out quickly. The sun did finally come out on the last day, and the place came into its own! Swimming in the lake was heavenly.

The house felt like it had not been thoroughly organized for a while - there was a lot of clutter, spiderwebs everywhere, a number of missing/burned out bulbs, a large lead acid battery left on the porch, a few missing gates or railings (to the second story deck, and top level of boat deck), some kitchen equipment that should be updated (the oven, lots of "sharp" knives, but none really). It would have been nice to find some empty drawers in bedrooms for us to unpack into, but all were full.

The main draw here is being at the lake, and it is beautiful. This place is charming, and has a wonderful setting. Taking care of the maintenance items would make it 5-star.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. We will certainly look into the missing railings that you describe. There is a missing railing section on the top deck to allow people to jump off easily so that is intentional, but that's the only railing that should be missing. With that said, small children and pets should be watched closely on the top deck. As far as organization goes, we do organize the house every time we’re there, but with renters coming in and out, we recognize that items don’t always get put away in the most organized fashion. If ever you cannot find something, we’re always available via phone. As far as storage/drawer space, we do keep at least a couple of drawers empty for renters, if all linens are put away properly. With that said, this is our second home and we do keep some of our own clothes in the home. If you’re the type of person who wants a full closet/dresser for unpacking, this may not be the rental for you. As far as the stove and other kitchen updates, the kitchen has a brand new refrigerator and dishwasher. The stove and microwave aren’t brand new, but have always worked for us without issue, and we cook 3 meals a day when we’re visiting. We just got brand new cutlery, however we will look into getting new, sharper knives. The burnt out lightbulbs is something we’re aware of, but unfortunately there’s little we can do. The wiring is old and not meant for today’s lightbulbs which causes them to blow easier than normal. We always keep extra lightbulbs in the house for this very reason. Lastly, we do treat for spiders and other insects monthly, but unfortunately when the house isn’t lived in every day, spiders do take up residence overnight. This is mainly an issue on the outside patios and dock area. We keep a broom on the dock to knock their webs down in the mornings. Thanks again for all the suggestions!

Our second year coming to Lake Gaston and renting this house. It perfect for our family! Cozy, comfortable and very spacious but truthfully we spend most of our time outside. You can't beat the outside property and scenery, lake view. Its perfect! Would recommend to anyone!

Quiet, peaceful and relaxing

  • 5 of 5

Our week at Hobo Haven exceeded our expectations. The home is lovely and well appointed. The cove where it is located is very quiet with minimal boat traffic, yet it is relatively easy to get out to the main lake. With multiple outdoor seating options, we would take turns having our meals on the screened in porch, reading on the upper balcony or having a glass of wine on the upper deck. We would definitely come back again.

Breathtaking

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely stay and fabulous wedding! The owners were amazing and beyond patient answering our questions and assisting in anyway they could. The house has plenty of space with breathtaking views. The house is located around the corner from Holly Grove Marina and on a much quieter part of the lake. We had a few issues with the house not being cleaned well, dishwasher leaking and flooding the kitchen floot, and no lights in the 3rd floor bath for the week but the owners immediately responded to us in working out the issue, they were completely unaware of the issue prior to us mentioning it. We plan to stay at this house again! It has rustic charm, a cozy feel, more outdoor living space than you could imagine, and the owners were amazing and generous in letting us host our wedding there and assisting in anyway possible. The house also has 3 living spaces making it great for large families or the perfect couples getaway! I would recommend this place to anyone and if you want the perfect location for a lake wedding...this is it!
