Have you ever imagined to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of la belle époque? Well this apartment is what you have always been you looking for. Placed a few meters from the entrance of the Parc Monceau where the young Marcel Proust who lived in the street used to play with Albertine.
The apartment occupies two floors of a 19th century mansion built to host the heiress of the Boucheron jeweler. It was later home to the diva of L'opera Marthe Chenal; you can read at the end of this text how it entered in the history of art.
On the ground floor overlooking its private garden are two suites, each with its bathroom (one with bath, shower and two washbasins, the other with shower) and plenty of closets. The first has a double bed and a sofa, the second three single beds. Next to this room is a service area with a small kitchen washing and drying machines. The rooms on the ground floor can be accessed directly from the entrance hall of the building or through two inside stairs that bring to the noble floor.
The noble floor, with its 14 feet (4mtrs) high decorated ceilings, hosts the 120 sqm (400 sq yards) salon with beautifully encarved parquet. Two original fireplaces add further charm to the space as well as the ancient furnitures and a collection of artworks which range from a follower of Canaletto to Picasso.
The noble floor is accessed through a spectacular entrance.
The floor comprises a studio library that brings to another suite with double bed next to which is the private bath with Jacuzzi and shower. A huge kitchen with professional fires and a small bath are also on this floor.
In the 40 sq mtrs private lush garden are a table and six chairs great for dining outside or welcoming guests.
Besides the Parc Monceau, which is next door, within walking distance is the Arc de Triomphe (900 mtrs), the shopping area of rue de Courcelles (200 mtrs) preferred by the parisians because it is not crowded by tourists and one of the best street market in town (rue Poncelet).
The Royal Monceau Hotel (where a suite half the size of the apartment starts at 4000 euro) with its gorgeous restaurants is only 400 mtrs away. The 84 bus stop is in front of the building as well as the Electric cars Autolib parking and Velib bikes. The Courcelles subway station is 100 mtrs away.
You will find plenty of art books, 40 guides of Paris, and all what you could possibly need in a kitchen.
And here comes the story I promised. The owner was a leading figure in the Parisian social life. She asked her lover, the painter Picabia, to design the invitation card for the new year's party which was attended among others by Picasso, Brancusi, Vollard, Cocteau, Radiguet, Auric, Morand (you can read the full story here http://apv-villers14.blogspot.it/2011/11/marthe-chenal-la-diva-flamboyante_08.html
Even more interesting is the fact that during that party was completed one of the masterpieces of modern art, the Oeil Cacodylate now at the centre Pompidou. You can read the story of the 60 prominent figures who signed the painting here http://dadaparis.blogspot.it/
The famous photograph by Man ray of the owner was shot in this apartment.
I had a wonderful stay in this place. The decoration is wonderful, and located in one of the best area of Paris. Close to main attractions, shopping and transportations. Everything is made to feel confortable. The apartment was very clean and to host was available to answer our questions.
I truly recommend this place.
