Stunningly beautiful location and super cool stone villa.
This place is incredibly beautiful. The panoramic views over the rolling hills change with the sunlight during the day, ending with some truly epic sunsets. You can even see Siena (about 60 kilometers away), which gives you an idea of how expansive the views are from this villa - with binoculars you can see the tower and dome of the Duomo and the tower on the Piazza del Campo.
The house itself is very comfortable and a great combination of modern and rustic. The kitchen is very well outfitted for some real cooking and there is a great little stone Tuscan grill built in to a stone wall out in the courtyard on which we grilled some of the excellent meats from the local butcher in Trequanda. The history of the 14th century little tower is interesting, and wondering what it has seen in the 7 centuries since it was built was often on our minds. Our girls loved swimming the pool and walking to the little village of Montisi. In the mornings and evenings, a nice herd of sheep would graze through the pasture below, their bells jingling in the distance. Great sound to wake up to. And after the sun sets, fire flies twinkle everywhere. We can't recommend this place highly enough. Catherine, thank you again for sharing it with us.
Another wonderful holiday
This house has everything needed for a peaceful holiday in Tuscany. The location among olive groves (down a strada bianca) is stunning, with a beautiful view over the countryside. If you get tired of looking at the view (unlikely) there are hundreds of books to entertain you. The house is well equipped, with insect screens on the bedroom and bathroom windows. The extensive garden is lovely and the pool is perfect for cooling off on hot days. There is a huge sitting room which remains cool in even the hottest weather. It’s approximately a half-hour drive to the A1 motorway and about an hour’s drive to Siena through wonderful scenery. The local village has some good restaurants - we particularly enjoyed Ristorante Ritorno di Fiamma.
April in Montisi
Our second visit. Great holiday and lovely to see the area in April with all the wild flowers.
Glorious Tuscany Visit at La Cella
La Cella in the delightful village of Montisi was the perfect base for our immersion into the beauty and culture of Tuscany. We took day trips to Siena, Montalcino, Pienza, Montepulciano, San Giovanni d’ Asso, Trequanda, and Bagno Vignoni. We experienced lovely vistas, lots of history, wonderful wine, and delicious food, but always welcomed returning to our peaceful homebase to watch the big white dogs herding the sheep on the hillside. La Cella’s house manager Adi was very kind and helpful with making restaurant reservations and getting the temperamental internet connection up and running. We planned to do laundry here at the mid-point in our Italy trip, but the clothes dryer was not working and it was too cool and potentially drizzly to trust the clothesline. Fortunately our investment in gas for the heating system not only made for cozy evenings, but also helped dry our clothes. We especially enjoyed dinner with Gianlucca at Il Barrino in Montisi, walking to the church in Montisi on Palm Sunday morning, lunch at Osteria del Conte and wine tasting with Adamo at Contucci Cantina in Montepulciano, and the springs at Bagno Vignoni. It was a wonderful stay in a beautiful area, with a very homey and comfortable base at La Cella.
Thank you very much for writing a thoughtful review. I am delighted that you made the most of your stay despite the less than beautiful weather ( I'm sorry I cannot organise that!)
I hope that the rest of your trip is as enjoyable. You are welcome back any time
Beautiful villa in a stunning location
Great location - central for seeing the area and within walking distance of a gorgeous hill town. Villa is very tastefully decorated and has an amazing view. A stunning property - highly recommend.
Dear Claire, very many thanks for taking the time to submit a review.
Excellent away from it all stay in stunning location.
Plane was very late so we didn’t arrive at the house until after 12 midnight, the key was left for us and lights on which was very welcome, but no water! Adi came by the next morning and was very friendly. The views from the house are it’s greatest asset and it never became stale. There is a great supermarket about 10 minutes drive away. We had a great meal at Restaurant Reborto but otherwise ate in. The House was lovely, very rustic and the grounds well looked after. The pool is quite lovely and we made much use of it. The local village, Nitisi, is very quiet but very beautiful and unspoiled. We all very much enjoyed our stay, the peace and quiet much appreciated and we made a friend of the neighbour’s dog, very happy Labradoodle. All in all, a fantastic stay.
Montisi is an as of yet 'undiscovered' medieval hilltop hamlet, where days and weeks are all too short. With Montisi having a bakery, grocery shop, choice of restaurants, and even a 'Cinema Paradiso', one would, in fact, not need leave Montisi at all if a book, a bottle of wine and priceless Tuscan views is your kind of holiday.
On the other hand, such world heritage sites as Pienza, Siena and Montepulciano are all within 20-30 minutes drive. Even Florence and Rome are within easy reach by car, one and two hours respectively, or by direct train from Chiusi.
Although Montisi is not an obvious beach location, a one day trip to the Tuscan coast is very doable with, for instance, Castiglione della Pescaia one and a half hours away by car.
