Spent a long weekend this May at Jim's cottage and cannot brag enough about the trip. We loved everything about North Captiva and will definitely be returning soon. The rental is very well appointed and Jim was extremely helpful with all aspects. The neighbor below is extremely friendly and made our little family feel even more welcome.
We stayed in this two bedroom, one bath home from March 6th to the 10th, 2016. There were four adults, and three children, aged one, two and three. It was probably too small to fit us all comfortably, but we expected that before hand. Jim, the owner was great to work with. He answered several questions I had very quickly. The kitchen was fully stocked, though you should bring your own charcoal if you plan to grill. Bring everything you will need for the duration of your stay since you will end up paying triple at the store they have on the island. The place is well kept and clean. Staying at this home allows you access to all of the amenities of North Captiva Resort. We used the two heated pools daily. There are beach towels provided by the owner available for use, though we did not use them because we had our own. There is a quiet, white sand beach within walking distance from this home, which was so peaceful. There are kayaks, bikes and tennis courts available for use by the resort. We used a pack and play that was available for us to use by the resort. The first one smelled quite moldy, so we returned it for another, which was much better. There is also a washer and dryer available for use downstairs. Overall, we would recommend this home to friends and family since the value is unbeatable.
I don't usually write VRBO reviews but I'm sure lot of people who haven't been to North Captiva can be a little hesitant due to the the fact its pretty isolated, so I figured it would be helpful to others to describe our experience a little bit. My wife and I stayed in Jim's cottage for 16 nights in February and traveled with a toddler and 9 month old baby. Overall the experience was great and this place was very updated, nice and clean - especially for the rate. Jim was quick to take care of any questions or minor issues that arose during our trip. We were a little nervous about staying on the island due to the lack of a grocery store and access to the mainland (in case we needed access to a hospital for one of the kids) - but we quickly realized those concerns turned out not to be minor. We loved North Captiva island and it was easily the most laid back place I have vacationed. The great part of this island is that there isn't all that much to do - so it forces you to just relax and take in the environment. The beaches were great and uncrowded, exploring the developed part of the island in our golf cart was also very fun. The beach sunsets were great. The state park portion of the island was very cool for anyone that enjoys hiking (or biking) and secluded beaches. We stayed for a longer time than most, so groceries could be a bit tricky to manage. We utilized the grocery delivery service at a premium price, mainly because we had enough luggage + kids to deal with transporting, but we met other families that brought their own - which seemed much easier than you would think because the ferry service unloads luggage and groceries and deliver them to your place upon arrival. There is a convenience store that has the basics and a surprisingly good selection of good beer - though more expensive than the mainland. One cool part about this island is that it is so small and isolated that you end up meeting a lot of new people. We befriended a couple other families and hung out at the island bars/restaurants and at the pool. The only things I think people should be aware about is that options of things to do are limited if the weather isn't nice (but that is always the case on warm weather vacations). As far as the place is concerned, it had everything we needed. There is a lady who lives in the downstairs unit, she was very nice, especially considering our baby woke her up in the middle of the night on a few occasions. Overall great sat and would do it again!
The house was super clean and just right for our stay on the island. The owner was very helpful with questions that we had and very easy to get into contact with when we needed to get a hold of him. This was our first stay on the island and we will be back! The pictures of the house are exactly what it is! We would stay here again, hopefully soon!
This was our 1st time on the Island and we were looking for a home that wasn't too big. We had 2 adults and our 17 and 11 yr old. I was so lost booking a home, not knowing much about the island and wanted it to be perfect and Castaway Cottage was perfect! 2 bedrooms (one with 2 twin beds for the kids). Beds were comfy and loved having the tv in the master, since the kids stayed up to watch the tv in the living room. (FYI-couldn't get the ceiling fan in the master to work). Good size bathroom. (I would suggest to the owner to get an additional bath rug to put in front of the shower to soak up water from stepping out of the shower). (Also, hanging additional towel hooks either on the wall or behind the door in the bathroom is definitely needed) The one towel bar could not hold 4 wet towels and wash clothes. The kitchen was wonderful. (Could have used some foil (for grilling our seafood and saran wrap for left overs). Plenty of space to cook meals and full size appliances and drawers stocked with all the essentials! LOTS of light in this home both natural and ceiling lights. The decor was bright and cheerful. It was a happy and pleasant home to walk into after spending 7 hrs on the beach! LOVED the deck. We ate almost all meals out there, even though there was plenty of space inside. It was just to gorgeous to stay inside. We met the man who lives on the 1st floor and he was extremely nice and kind! He, along with everyone else on the island, waved and smiled and said "hi" each time our yellow club car passed by! We nick named it "Bumble Bee". The club car died one day and needed a new fuse so that was taken care of. Was exciting to see planes land and take off (maybe 4 times during our 5 day stay) since home is close to the airstrip. Its close to 2 great beach access and fishing spots. Drove club car to the big beach by the nature preserve each day and to the club pool each afternoon. We rented jet skis and followed dolphins in the ocean, rented kayaks, my son picked up basketball games 3 times. This was a very unique and RELAXING vacation and will return. Loved Castaway Cottage!
North Captiva is spectacular and the unit we stayed in was wonderful. It was neat, clean, and definitely felt like a cottage at the beach. It was surrounded by trees so those who prefer the shade can sit on the balcony and be comfortable. The beach was approx. 600 yards away so swimming and sunning was just a couple minute walk. The pool and tennis courts were a short golf cart ride away.
The kitchen was well stocked with pots/pans/flatware and spices of all kinds.
