Overview

About the property

3500' Luxury Coastal Mountain Home On 150+ Acres Looking Over Central Coast

A few miles north of Cambria, in the valley adjacent to the legendary Hearst Castle property, your idyllic retreat awaits. Come experience the same magic that inspired William Randolph Hearst to build his dream here. Escape to a secret world...as you climb the gentle dirt road to the ridge, a valley opens before you that few have ever seen.

A view of a wild coast that includes San Simeon Cove hangs below, and the folds of the Coastal Range envelop this awe inspiring property.

Feel the distractions and bustle of modern life drop away. Let the sun and stars be your clock as you find a whole new flow to life. This in not your typical vacation rental. This is a world removed, your own world, off-the-grid, setting the stage for a brand new kind of experience.

Red Mountain Retreat features 3500 square feet, 3 bedrooms (and loft), 2 bathrooms, generous common areas and a chef's kitchen. Fine linens, bedding, and numerous touches will delight you with a sense of home and luxury.

Decks surround the home, inviting you out to the ocean and mountain views, bbq, and outdoor gathering areas. A fire pit calls your clan to gather under the night sky. Outdoor games offer simple ways to play together.

Explore the 150+ private acres along the walking paths. The fruit orchard sits below the house for your strolling and collecting pleasure. A remote treehouse in an enchanted forest awaits your discovery (we recommend this walk around sunset!).

While offering a great sense of solitude, you are only 12 minutes from Highway 1 and the beach, and 15 minutes from Cambria or San Simeon, where numerous restaurants, boutiques and art galleries await.

About Brian Wright

I am an executive director of several companies, wife and mom to two intrepid boys. When time and schedule allow, we aim toward Red Mountain Retreat and the Central Coast to receive all the goodness that await there. We invite you to do the same...

Brian Wright purchased this estate in 2013

Why Brian Wright chose Cambria

When I saw this property come up for sale, I didn't hesitate to make an offer. This place has real power. And that power manifests in different ways: the power of a 360 view of the ocean and rolling mountains without power lines, buildings or smog; the 'perfect moment' feeling of strolling through fruit trees, gazing at the sun setting into the sea; how big and small you can feel under the Milky Way popping out of the clear night sky. Bird song, deer tracks, a gentle ocean breeze. Red Mountain is quiet, peaceful, and full of nature's magic.

What makes this estate unique

We kept this property true to the original builder's intent. While comfortably self-sufficient, the home is off the grid, providing abundant solitude and peace while still very close to town and beach. Much of the appeal of this place is what it doesn't have: distraction, or many sights or sounds of the human world. It sets up an opportunity to align with natural rhythms. We honor that by having no alarm clocks, a microwave and limited TVs. That said, we have kitted the home out in great detail to support all the elements of good living, and your amazing stay.

Loved it - Kids spring break

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here during spring break and three of our kids just enjoyed it a lot. It was very relaxing, property was well maintained upon our arrival, clean and beautiful. Brian, was very helpful in providing information before and during our trip . Very precise instruction which were helpful to us during our trip. When we reached the property, we just stayed there for one day relaxing and there was no need to go anywhere else. Hike to tree house was awesome!! Highly recommended for any age group who loves to be surrounded by nature. I think spring is the best time to visit this place when mountains are green .

AMAZING, secluded, getaway on the central coast

  • 5 of 5

I stayed at the Red Mountain Retreat for a girls getaway weekend and it was nothing short of spectacular. It far exceeded our expectations and the pictures do not do it justice. We chose this location because we had girls driving from both Northern and Southern CA and it was smack in between. The house is immaculate with a beautiful living room, kitchen and combined living area with a great open floor plan. There are tall ceilings and floor to ceiling windows highlighting the incredible view. The kitchen is huge and all 6 of us could fit comfortably to cook and socialize. The outdoor space is where we spent most of our time. There is a big beautiful deck overlooking the hills and ocean, and a large sand pit with ladder ball and a fire pit area. The sunsets are breathtaking. There were 6 of us and we all slept comfortably in a bed with space to spare. The house is located about 15 mins up a private road, which provided a secluded getaway with very few neighbors and a chance to disconnect from it all. There are actually deer that come through the yard and hawks you can watch fly through the canyons. I really cannot over stress how amazing this house is, we had plans to go out on Saturday to the beach and we decided pretty much immediately we were crazy to leave the house. We spent all day just lounging out on the deck in the gorgeous sunshine.

I also have to give a huge shout out to Brian, the property manager. I emailed him probably 100 times and he always responded and was very patient. He meets you in town on arrival and gives a very detailed map and directions to get to the property. We had a small issue with the water when we arrived and he came to the property to fix it immediately and then showed us how to turn on the outdoor speakers we didn't even know existed. To top it off, we were looking for a cab in to town for dinner and we could not find one due to the seclusion of the property. I asked Brian if he knew a cab company that served the house, he asked what time we needed it for, and sent us a driver to get us to town safely. It was A+ service.

If you are on the fence about which house to rent, CHOOSE THIS ONE. I promise you will not be disappointed. I am already trying to find a weekend to go back.

Thank you Brian for everything. I will be seeing you again, hopefully soon.

4th of July getaway

  • 5 of 5

I live in San Francisco and organized a trip with some LA friends and SF friends. This property was perfectly located exactly halfway. There were 8 of us and all of us had comfortable beds for the weekend.

I immediately became the star of the trip for finding such a beautiful property to rent. It is crucially nestled up in the hills about 4 miles from the coast, which means that it largely avoids the marine layer. We all got some very good sun throughout the weekend : )

We couldn't have asked for a more comfortable getaway. As host Brian recommended, we stocked up on tons of food before getting there and were able to basically just relax the entire time there. We played lots of lawn games on the beach and made delicious meals in the kitchen and on the grill. The only minor hiccup we had was not being able to find an extra propane tank, but we called host Brian and he quickly directed us to where the backup was.

Would highly recommend this beautiful home for anyone that is looking to get away in comfort. I hope to be back soon.
