The Acorn Cottage is a large two-bedroom apartment above a three-car garage (Angie's studio now). The full bath and kitchen make it ideal for long visits. Laundry facilities are available under the apartment. It has most of the daily necessities and conveniences. The apartment has an on-demand tankless water heater. That means you never run out of hot water. There's eight nice beaches within 30 minutes of us.

Angie and I are both retired USAF. We got to sample lodging across the U.S. and in several countries. When we started the Acorn Cottage we wanted to provide travelers with something more like a home instead of a furnished box. In other words, somewhere that WE would want to stay! We clean and maintain the Acorn Cottage ourselves so we KNOW what condition it is in before you arrive. We live in a separate building on the property and will be your neighbors if you come visit! That means any problems or questions come directly to us, the owners.

About Richard Knowles

Angie and I were both career USAF and are now self-employed and semi-retired. Our daughter is active duty US Army. Angie lived less than a mile from here during high school and college before she entered the USAF. She knows the area very well and gives great directions!. She does fabric art, slipcovers for furniture, screen printing and other activities that are enjoyable and sometimes profitable.

We both have a variety of interests and there is normally one or more on-going projects around our house. It's normal to see us covered with things like thread, sawdust or paint. After the USAF we both did some work in the Home Décor industry as custom fabricators, so we have some interesting skill sets.

Richard Knowles purchased this apartment in 1995

Why Richard Knowles chose St Petersburg

We bought a 3-car garage with an attached apartment and a bungalow! The garage was a big factor in our decision. We are self employed and the garage has become our studio. We live in the bungalow and our daughter used to live in the apartment.

What makes this apartment unique

The Acorn Cottage is more like a home than a vacation rental. It is very private even though we're near downtown. All of our guests love the amenities like a well equipped kitchen, cooler, beach towels, a small DVD library, tourist pamphlets, off-street parking, etc. Guests also appreciate being near downtown and the nearby interstate access. Everyone loves the quaint decor and furnishings.

Affordable and accommodating

  • 5 of 5

The Acorn Cottage is located in the historic Kenwood section of St Petersburg, and within blocks of the Grand Central District. it is also about half a mile to the freeway, and a 15 minute drive to St Pete beach. The place was very clean, and Richard and Angie where very friendly and accomodating. We appreciated the very affordable cost, plus no cleaning fee. All appliances worked well, and there was coffee and other items to supplement our cooking in the cupboards and full size fridge. Great stay!

March 12 -26th - Acorn Cottage is an Excellent Choice

  • 5 of 5

We highly recommend the Acorn Cottage. A clean, comfortable apartment in a good, convenient location. Lovely neighbourhood for morning and evening walks.

Rick was a charming and interesting host. Unfortunately, we did not have the pleasure of meeting Angie as she was away.

We are looking forward to next March. Even though the neighbours did not seem to notice the roosters at 4:30 a.m., we did.

Owner's Response: Thomas and his wife were great guests. They stayed with us for two weeks and were no trouble at all. They had a great time seeing the sites and enjoying themselves. They left the Acorn Cottage clean and neat when they left and it was greatly appreciated. We'd be happy to see them come back and stay with us again.

The Acoorn Cottage is like home away from home.

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay! Ideal location, so clean and comfortable. Thank you, Rick and Angie. We recommend this little home away from home and look forward to visiting again.

Owner's Response: Debbie and her hubby were perfect guests, they were hardly ever here! We did get to spend a little time visiting with them. They came down for the annual kiln firing at the nearby Morean Center for Clay which kept them busy. They were here for a week and left the Acorn Cottage in great shape when they left. We'd be more than happy to have them come visit again sometime.

Great owners of a nice cottage

  • 5 of 5

We had a great weekend in St Pete and the Acorn Cottage was perfect spot for us. There's a full fridge, small kitchen, nice television, and WiFi. While we did not stay in the house for too long, we certainly could have comfortably. The downtown area and beaches were a very short drive. We'll certainly book this property if we're in the area again.

I chose Acorn Cottage for its location, configuration, and amenities. It was perfect in all departments. Location was perfect for proximity to Grand Central district (for visiting local friends), FreeFall Theater (had tickets for a show), downtown (love Ceviche for tapas), and the beaches (I chose St Pete, Madeira, and Fort De Soto--short drives each). Bed was extremely comfortable. The apartment was perfect for relaxing. Internet WiFi and Cable TV worked flawlessly. Hosts were friendly and attentive. Kitchen was stocked for breakfast for the week. Extremely clean and quiet. Love the decor. Air conditioned. Free parking on premises. Great neighborhood (Historic Kenwood). Highly recommended!!

Owner's Response: Steve was a great guest, we hardly ever saw him! Even though we didn't see him much we did enjoy the time we spent with him. He was here visiting friends and enjoying the area for six days. It was his first "bed & breakfast" experience and we were happy to provide him with a good impression. He left the Acorn Cottage in great shape and we'd be happy to see him come back for another visit sometime!

Car: recommended

You'll be just west of downtown St Petersburg in a residential area bordering the business district. The apartment is above a 3-car garage (Angie's studio) like a little penthouse. It has a great view of the area. You can see your car in our driveway from the living room and bedroom windows too. It's also very private and makes a perfect little get-away place.

The neighborhood is full of the old Craftsman Style homes and is pleasant to stroll in. There's a small park, art galleries and food within walking distance.

Downtown has been recognized by Southern Living and Forbes Travel Magazines as 'A New Destination!' They praised the wide pedestrian-friendly sidewalks and availability of bistros & restaurants. There's also art galleries, music, plays, museums... and don't forget the new & improved Salvador Dali Museum! Our downtown is known for it's wide choice of the arts.

We are not on the downtown beaches, but you probably won't want to swim in the downtown beaches anyway! We ARE within thirty minutes of six or more popular SWIMMING beaches. The interstate is just down the street and provides access to all the regional attractions, theme parks, etc.
