I am a retired school teacher and my wife a retired RN. We love Hawaii, as we had both lived here as children. We found the house before we retired and now frequently come to stay.
Rick and Mary Woodbury purchased this apartment in 1999
This property was affordable, although it was a true fixer-upper. Over the years we have put many hours into adding on to the kitchen in the ohana, adding a back porch area, putting in tons of cosmetic work. We love our second home, and our neighborhood and want to share it with you!
Puna is a very large area, and you will find the Big Island to be very large indeed compared to the other islands. This house is in a good location for seeing the Hilo sights, the Puna sights, and Volcano National Park. Even though the house is located in a neighborhood, because so many lots are undeveloped (rain forestation), one feels they are out in the country. Only four miles up the road is Pahoa with some very good restaurants, groceries, and gasoline.
The ohana had all the basics and while not fancy, was clean and placed just far away from town to enjoy the quiet Hawaiian nights while being close to all the amenities and signts of Pahoa, Hilo and Volcano. I'd recommend this to anyone needing a base of operations to venture forth sightseeing and adventuring on the Big Island, yet not wanting to spend a lot of money on housing. This was the perfect balance of utility and price!
Although the owners were very prompt with their Emails and seemed nice to communicate with, the abandoned building is in general disrepair. Live and dead cockroaches, open and non-labeled (!) poison containers in various places of the apartment. Mold everywhere and not enough light (and/or switches) available to navigate the pitch dark place at night. Broken wooden door frame was sharp and not looked after, although the splinters showed signs of age. Hot water tap in the shower was broken and very sharp, which was dangerous. Washing machine was nice, but not very useful as clothes take 3+ (!) days to dry. Dryer is needed in that climate. Simple accommodation for a budget price is fine, but should not pose health risks. Not recommended for people with mold allergies. Nice to wake up to the birds, frogs and lush blooming jungle yard.
I thought "jungle paradise" referred to the Pahao area, but it actually refers to the property itself - it is a huge backyard filled with flowers. The apartment is spacious and comfortable. We were able to explore the whole island from here. We would gladly stay here again - but next time, we hope to stay longer.
Not fancy but efficient and it had everything we needed. We stayed a month and got to know so many people. A wonderful time. Incredible yard with fruits and orchids... wonderful owners. Good advice about where to go snorkeling and many other activities.
I can't say enough about Rick and Kathy and their place.
Very honest, good people. I came for a quick stay and ended up extending my stay considerably because I loved it so much. Rick is an avid colorful gardener, making for a lovely property complete with tropical fruit. They have wonderful neighbors. You really feel as if you are in real Hawaii.
Their offering fits a rare, real need in the market. Affordable great base for Volcano, Puna, Hilo (and Hula Festival), even Mauna Kea and North Coast. At first we stayed in a Waikoloa resort but my stay at Rick's gave me a completely different, deeper, more authentic experience of true Hawaii. I was then a woman staying alone and felt very comfortable, safe and looked after.
Lots going on in Puna. Easy to stay and get involved in many different local activities. Beautiful Coast with park five minutes drive in one direction, Puna town with amenities five minutes drive in other direction.
Other logistical details: offer washing machine, beach gear, complete kitchen with amenities, nice shower, private patio front (screened in) and back (surrounded by garden), parking, helpful with travel advice.
