About Rick and Mary (Kathy) Woodbury

I am a retired school teacher and my wife a retired RN. We love Hawaii, as we had both lived here as children. We found the house before we retired and now frequently come to stay.

Rick and Mary (Kathy) Woodbury purchased this apartment in 1999

Why Rick and Mary (Kathy) Woodbury chose Puna District

This property was affordable, although it was a true fixer-upper. Over the years we have put many hours into adding on to the kitchen in the ohana, adding a back porch area, putting in tons of cosmetic work. We love our second home, and our neighborhood and want to share it with you!

What makes this apartment unique

Puna is a very large area, and you will find the Big Island to be very large indeed compared to the other islands. This house is in a good location for seeing the Hilo sights, the Puna sights, and Volcano National Park. Even though the house is located in a neighborhood, because so many lots are undeveloped (rain forestation), one feels they are out in the country. Only four miles up the road is Pahoa with some very good restaurants, groceries, and gasoline.

Tropical Retreat in East Side !

  • 5 of 5

We spent a few days at this very clean vacation rental. It is quite spacious for a small family of three, including a nice patio. It has everything you need (for bathroom or kitchen). If you are looking for a little adventure or a "tropical" retreat, this place has an authentic "jungle-feel" to it, and you will enjoy the sights and sounds of coqui frogs, geckos and other insects from the garden/wilderness that surrounds the property. In the closet, we were pleased to see beach chairs, towels, umbrellas, ice-chest, etc for picnics or beach activities. The property is well-located for exploring National Parks, black sand beaches in Pahoa and Hilo area, etc. This is good value for the price. The owners were very accommodating and helpful. We will remember them fondly.

Very private location in a rustic setting

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed the privacy of the property and its laid back country setting. Loved the tropical birds singing all night and no vehicle noise at all. In the morning, I went jogging around the loop and did some exercises in the lush backyard. There is some gear for beaches and some cookware. A fridge and a stove are there too. Nothing fancy, but everything we needed. My wife and I both felt a little saddened when we were departing the property on the last morning. Thank you, owners.

Just what I was looking for

  • 4 of 5

Nice & quiet area 5 miles outside from Pahoa. Price is right for this accommodation which was comfortable & clean. Wonderful yard & had a visiting Gecko. The owners responded quickly for an issue that came.

I would recommend this as a place to stay.

Convenient and affordable

  • 4 of 5

A great place to stay while enjoying the Big Island. Close to Hilo for all shopping and conveniences, and an easy 2 hour drive over to Kona side. We were able to see and do so much more staying here than if we had stayed in a resort. Rick was very friendly and knowledgeable and told us some great places to eat and visit. The house and yard are very beautiful and there are lots of flowers and fruit to enjoy. He told us about riding bikes out to Kalapana to see the lava flowing into the ocean which we would not have known about otherwise. The apartment was perfectly adequate for what we needed it for, which was showering and sleeping. If you are looking for a resort experience with room service, spa options, a pool, etc, this is not the place for you. If you need a place to stay while getting out and exploring this place is great and gives you everything you need.

Quiet Hawaiian Home

  • 5 of 5

The ohana had all the basics and while not fancy, was clean and placed just far away from town to enjoy the quiet Hawaiian nights while being close to all the amenities and signts of Pahoa, Hilo and Volcano. I'd recommend this to anyone needing a base of operations to venture forth sightseeing and adventuring on the Big Island, yet not wanting to spend a lot of money on housing. This was the perfect balance of utility and price!
