About Rick and Mary (Kathy) Woodbury

I am a retired school teacher and my wife a retired RN. We love Hawaii, as we had both lived here as children. We found the house before we retired and now frequently come to stay.

Rick and Mary (Kathy) Woodbury purchased this apartment in 1999

Why Rick and Mary (Kathy) Woodbury chose Puna District

This property was affordable, although it was a true fixer-upper. Over the years we have put many hours into adding on to the kitchen in the ohana, adding a back porch area, putting in tons of cosmetic work. We love our second home, and our neighborhood and want to share it with you!

What makes this apartment unique

Puna is a very large area, and you will find the Big Island to be very large indeed compared to the other islands. This house is in a good location for seeing the Hilo sights, the Puna sights, and Volcano National Park. Even though the house is located in a neighborhood, because so many lots are undeveloped (rain forestation), one feels they are out in the country. Only four miles up the road is Pahoa with some very good restaurants, groceries, and gasoline.

An excellent rain forest location for lava exploration and snorkeling. Great neighbors and friends. We felt right at home. Rickey and Kathy are wonderful hosts. See you next year!

Convenient and affordable

  • 4 of 5

A great place to stay while enjoying the Big Island. Close to Hilo for all shopping and conveniences, and an easy 2 hour drive over to Kona side. We were able to see and do so much more staying here than if we had stayed in a resort. Rick was very friendly and knowledgeable and told us some great places to eat and visit. The house and yard are very beautiful and there are lots of flowers and fruit to enjoy. He told us about riding bikes out to Kalapana to see the lava flowing into the ocean which we would not have known about otherwise. The apartment was perfectly adequate for what we needed it for, which was showering and sleeping. If you are looking for a resort experience with room service, spa options, a pool, etc, this is not the place for you. If you need a place to stay while getting out and exploring this place is great and gives you everything you need.

Quiet Hawaiian Home

  • 5 of 5

The ohana had all the basics and while not fancy, was clean and placed just far away from town to enjoy the quiet Hawaiian nights while being close to all the amenities and signts of Pahoa, Hilo and Volcano. I'd recommend this to anyone needing a base of operations to venture forth sightseeing and adventuring on the Big Island, yet not wanting to spend a lot of money on housing. This was the perfect balance of utility and price!

General disrepair and not clean (live and dead cockroaches).

  • 2 of 5

Although the owners were very prompt with their Emails and seemed nice to communicate with, the abandoned building is in general disrepair. Live and dead cockroaches, open and non-labeled (!) poison containers in various places of the apartment. Mold everywhere and not enough light (and/or switches) available to navigate the pitch dark place at night. Broken wooden door frame was sharp and not looked after, although the splinters showed signs of age. Hot water tap in the shower was broken and very sharp, which was dangerous. Washing machine was nice, but not very useful as clothes take 3+ (!) days to dry. Dryer is needed in that climate. Simple accommodation for a budget price is fine, but should not pose health risks. Not recommended for people with mold allergies. Nice to wake up to the birds, frogs and lush blooming jungle yard.

Owner's Response: We feel badly that you were not satisfied with the apartment. It is NOT an abandoned house. It is our second home and we come multiple times a year and is used frequently by our family and friends. We have a car parked in the carport and radios and lights go on by timers. Our house is located in a rainforest, which makes the area very beautiful, but unfortunately increases the bugs and mildew. We do have cockroach bait around the ohana, and when there are rainy days for any extended time then they make their way in. We have even encountered roaches in a luxury hotel! Our housekeeper "bombs" the apartment frequently. We are not sure about the damaged door frame, we will have this checked out. This is the first we are aware of it... Mildew is also a continuous problem. We have to keep the Windows partially open to ventilate and prevent mold. If we had been appraised of these complaints at the beginning of this period, we would have gladly cancelled and refunded the rest of the remaining nights and permit you to find other lodgings. Electricity is very expensive and most people in this area do not have dryers; but we will add info about the laundromat which is available in Pahoa to the website. It is important to us that our travelers enjoy the apartment.

The title says it all

  • 5 of 5

I thought "jungle paradise" referred to the Pahao area, but it actually refers to the property itself - it is a huge backyard filled with flowers. The apartment is spacious and comfortable. We were able to explore the whole island from here. We would gladly stay here again - but next time, we hope to stay longer.

Not fancy but efficient and it had everything we needed. We stayed a month and got to know so many people. A wonderful time. Incredible yard with fruits and orchids... wonderful owners. Good advice about where to go snorkeling and many other activities.
