This historical house was built in the 1760s and has not lost an ounce of its original charm. Enormous screened in porch, six fireplaces, 14 acres, original hardwoods, and other detail from the 1700s, a sauna on the porch, many cozy spots to play games, catch up on reading, roast marshmallows, etc.... The house has been the host of many reunions and get togethers for over 20 people. 5 bedrooms in addition to an aero bed and a comfy couch. People always have big plans to go tubing on the battenkill, kayaking at lake shaftsbury, ziplining at bromley or fly fishing, hiking, or outlet shopping in manchester. But more times than not, they rarely leave the house all weekend. It's just that peaceful.

There is one master bedroom on the 1st floor and four bedrooms upstairs. The kitchen is huge. And there's a living room, dining room (game room) and den.

About Owner/Manager

I currently live in upstate New York. Due to some health problems, I haven't been able to get to the house as much as I like this year, so I am giving this a try. It's my favorite place to be in the world.

Owner/Manager purchased this chateau / country house in 2005

Exactly what we were looking for!

  • 5 of 5

Cozy, comfortable, convenient, charming -- and much more! We wanted a relaxing place for a few family days away, and Michelle's home fit the bill perfectly. The house itself is fascinating, and I spent several hours reading (and reporting to our group on) letters written by former owners and their family members about its history, dating back to the Civil War. In addition to charming features such as hardwood floors, high ceilings, brick oven in kitchen, large fireplaces and pretty wallpaper, all the necessary updates have been made to include a well-equipped kitchen, modern bathrooms, plenty of great space for sitting/eating/relaxing, and spacious bedrooms with very comfortable beds. Plenty of firewood (we spent lots of time in den together,) clean towels & bedding, (including flannel sheets, much appreciated since temps were below zero degrees entire stay,) pantry items and bathroom supplies. House was spotless and ready for us when we arrived.

As advertised, there are beautiful mountain views, and we also enjoyed snowshoeing through the fields and woods behind the house -- as well as in the State Park just a couple of miles down the road. Two of our intrepid family members braved the bitter cold to ski at nearby Magic Mountain, and were very happy with the skiing conditions and the friendly people who work there. We had a nice afternoon in Manchester (fantastic bookstore and plenty to see and do along Main Street) and a great lunch in Bennington at the Madison Brewing Company. We fantasized about coming back in warmer weather to enjoy the surroundings and, especially, the huge screened porch in the back of the house.

So yes, we loved this little corner of Vermont paradise. Thank you, Michelle!

A charming, but worn house

  • 3 of 5

A house with some history and great views of the mountains. Nice access to Bennington and Manchester and the outdoors.

However! The house is old and does not appear to be lived in regularly. You should know: water pressure is very low, some windows do not open and one was broken during our stay, one bathroom was in the process of being repaired. Some furniture is old and worn.

We have lots of experience renting houses. Perhaps we are unfamiliar with Vermont rentals, renting in the Catskills, Berkshires, instead, but felt we paid much too much for a house that could use some fixing up.

Great property. Lots of character. Perfect for a large group.

  • 5 of 5

We had a large group together for a cycling event in nearby New York State. Instead of expensive hotels we rented this large house where we could relax together, cook meals and just hang out. This property was perfect for that and more. Clean and spacious. The owner, Michelle, was very accommodating and quick to respond to questions. Already planning next year.

Spacious, clean and charming!

  • 5 of 5

We had only 9 people, but the house can comfortably accommodate 14! We really took advantage of the huge kitchen and cozy fireplace. Property was clean and quiet, and about a 10-15 minute drive to groceries.

Michelle was very responsive and all the information we needed was in the house when we arrived. Would definitely recommend and look forward to renting this property again!

Charming, Spacious Farmhouse!

  • 5 of 5

Our New Years ski holiday in Shaftsbury was picture perfect, and Michelle went the extra mile to ensure our visit was a comfortable one.

The charming farmhouse had more than enough space to accommodate our group of 12 adults, and in addition to the 6 beds/5 bedroom layout, we arrived to find 2 extra air mattresses, already assembled and fitted with sheets and blankets. The kitchen was equipped with enough kitchenware to prepare our own meals, and the well stocked "board game corner" saw plenty of use! Perhaps our favorite features of this classic home were the fireplaces..the three operating fireplaces on the first floor were an absolute pleasure, especially after the blustery days on the slopes of Bromley (which is a short 20 minute drive away). There was a large cord of dry wood provided for us in the screened-in porch.

Couldn't imagine a finer place to spend our holiday, and grateful to Michelle for sharing her cozy country home with us!
