This historical house was built in the 1760s and has not lost an ounce of its original charm. Enormous screened in porch, six fireplaces, 14 acres, original hardwoods, and other detail from the 1700s, a sauna on the porch, many cozy spots to play games, catch up on reading, roast marshmallows, etc.... The house has been the host of many reunions and get togethers for over 20 people. 5 bedrooms in addition to an aero bed and a comfy couch. People always have big plans to go tubing on the battenkill, kayaking at lake shaftsbury, ziplining at bromley or fly fishing, hiking, or outlet shopping in manchester. But more times than not, they rarely leave the house all weekend. It's just that peaceful.
There is one master bedroom on the 1st floor and four bedrooms upstairs. The kitchen is huge. And there's a living room, dining room (game room) and den.
I currently live in upstate New York. Due to some health problems, I haven't been able to get to the house as much as I like this year, so I am giving this a try. It's my favorite place to be in the world.
Owner/Manager purchased this chateau / country house in 2005
We had only 9 people, but the house can comfortably accommodate 14! We really took advantage of the huge kitchen and cozy fireplace. Property was clean and quiet, and about a 10-15 minute drive to groceries.
Michelle was very responsive and all the information we needed was in the house when we arrived. Would definitely recommend and look forward to renting this property again!
Our New Years ski holiday in Shaftsbury was picture perfect, and Michelle went the extra mile to ensure our visit was a comfortable one.
The charming farmhouse had more than enough space to accommodate our group of 12 adults, and in addition to the 6 beds/5 bedroom layout, we arrived to find 2 extra air mattresses, already assembled and fitted with sheets and blankets. The kitchen was equipped with enough kitchenware to prepare our own meals, and the well stocked "board game corner" saw plenty of use! Perhaps our favorite features of this classic home were the fireplaces..the three operating fireplaces on the first floor were an absolute pleasure, especially after the blustery days on the slopes of Bromley (which is a short 20 minute drive away). There was a large cord of dry wood provided for us in the screened-in porch.
Couldn't imagine a finer place to spend our holiday, and grateful to Michelle for sharing her cozy country home with us!
3 day family Thanksgiving: "A new tradition is born!"
Everything in the house was perfect. The large back porch was where we spent almost all of our time the entire weekend. Plenty of seating and sleeping for our big family. Recommend the house highly. Thank you Michelle for accommodating us.
Mary and family
This house was perfect for our family reunion of 10 people. The setting is lovely and the historic house is so charming. We loved the bright and spacious kitchen and the large screened in porch. Beautiful views of the mountains and valley. We enjoyed short walks to the Chocolate Barn for ice cream and Clearbrook Farm for fresh fruits and vegetables. It was a great summer weekend!
The trip could not have been more perfect. There were 10-14 guests and there was more than enough room for everyone. We celebrated the new year by playing board games and cooking in the spacious kitchen. This house has a lot of history and everyone was thoroughly impressed. It being on a main road was not a concern at all, more so convenient than anything. I was concerned about having to find things to do since ski conditions weren't up to par but we amused ourselves in the cozy classic home. Spent one of the days in Manchester which is just 20 mins away. The owner Michelle put a lot of work in to provide information to the travelers about the area. There was everything from menus to reviews in a binder at the house. She even had a recommended weekend itinerary. Everyone had a blast and I am so happy how everything worked out. Only down side was water pressure was low, however that did not stop us from enjoying ourselves. Absolutely going to rent again.
