Reminiscent of Abraham Lincoln's birthplace, this hand-hewn log cabin dates back to the early 1800's. The log cabin was originally built in northern Indiana by pioneer settlers from Pennsylvania. Over the years, the logs were covered up with clapboard siding and this preserved them for years.
In 1970, another pastor bought the logs and relocated it in its present location in northern Newaygo County. The log portion of the cabin has a great room with two bedrooms upstairs. About twenty years later, he added a bedroom, bathroom and kitchen/dining room. In 1994, we bought the cabin and have enjoyed many summers relaxing and enjoying the peace and solitude. We've enjoyed the lake-access privileges on the quiet non-sports, no-wake private fishing lake nearby.
You will need to provide your own bed linens and towels. Warm blankets and pillows are provided. The beds include one queen sized bed in the master room and four twin beds upstairs in the log cabin. (There is also a queen sized sofa bed available, too, though it's not the most comfortable to sleep on. It will do in a pinch.)
FYI: This cabin is about one hour from Lake Michigan and Ludington State Park has a beautiful clean beach to spend a day.
I rented the Peace Lodge for a weekend in November for my girlfriends birthday. We live in Chicago, and my girlfriend had never even been to Michigan before ,so I thought it would be the perfect choice. The cabin is truly amazing, the second I opened the door I was in awe. The cabin has such a great rustic smell and feeling to it. We brought our beagle Harvey with us for the trip, he loved roaming around in the woods and exploring the trails in the National Forest.
We loved the fireplace in the great room, and we enjoyed sitting by the fire pit outside of the cabin. The owner was very kind, and had more than enough firewood for us to use. Overall, we were very pleased, and would definitely stay here again in the future! Thank you for making my first VRBO experience great!
Very unique place and well stocked for "getting away from it all." Very quite - so quiet that the place pulls the stress out of you. Cooked a lot on the charcoal grill and the indoor electric range. Hand cut beams form the base of the cabin.
It was a magical experience staying in this cozy, quiet cabin in the middle of the forest. It is like time travelling back 200 years or so to those days when people built their houses from logs with master skills. The kids really enjoyed our stay since it was also a learning experience for them. The owner was helpful and informative and promptly returned our damage deposit within a week. Centrally situated only 1 hour drive from the major tourist attractions in Grand Rapids and/or Silver Lake Sand Dunes.
This was a lovely place for my dad and I to spend a few days near Baldwin, MI. The cabin is a nice mix of old and new. The original cabin is beautiful and has a loft/bedroom space above with four single beds. Downstairs in the new section is the bathroom, bedroom and kitchen. The stairs to the loft upstairs are quite steep so you would have to be very careful with young children. We had five people one night and the place handled that number without a problem. We built a fire outside and enjoyed the sunset. We canoed the Pere Marquette twice and drove to Luddington on another day. There's so much to do in the area and it was nice to stay in a place that was quiet and peaceful. The owners were very accommodating and quick to compensate us when there was a small problem with the refrigerator. We would definitely return!
Our family of 7 (including a newborn) truly enjoyed our stay at the Peace Lodge. When we first arrived, the kids had a great time exploring all the rustic nooks and crannies of this delightful cabin. Some neat table games were provided, and the kids spread out on the living room floor (in front of a cozy fire!) and played together every night. The rocking chairs were a godsend for this new mom and baby. Everything we needed was provided... the owners do request that you bring your own sheets and towels.
We did have a problem with the refrigerator during our stay. (I believe the owners have since repaired or replaced the fridge.) The owner graciously and promptly refunded us a generous portion of our rental fee AND offered us a free night's stay in the future. Gold star for guest service! We will definitely return to this delightful rustic hideaway.
