At 444 miles, the Susquehanna River (named for the local Susquehannock tribe) is the largest tributary to the Chesapeake Bay. The cottage is 77 miles north of Havre' De Grace, where the river enters the Bay, and 367 miles south of its origin in Cooperstown, New York. Looking north you can see a 1/2 size replica of the State of Liberty, located on one of the remaining Northern Central Railroad bridge piers in the Dauphin Narrows. Behind the statue, Second Mountain rises abruptly and marks the largest of the Susquehanna Water Gaps. Below the cottage, spanning the river is the Rockville Bridge, the longest stone arch railroad bridge in the world. (You can check out photographs of all three Rockville Bridges on the dining area wall in the cottage.)
Our 'Welcome Notebook' will suggest plenty of things to keep you occupied while in the area. We suggest you bring toys and arrive ready to relax and enjoy “river time”!
We own Blue Mountain Outfitters, a specialty canoe & kayak shop just up the hill from the cottage. We've been fascinated with paddling all our lives, and decided to make it not only our passion but our livelihood. When we got the opportunity to purchase this cottage adjacent to the boat ramp we use for our business, it clicked. We look forward to sharing our cottage and the Susquehanna River with you!
Doug & Mary Gibson purchased this cottage in 2013
Access to the river for paddling, boating, and fishing. Within walking distance of a great tavern for drinks and meals. Close enough to Harrisburg, Hershey, and Gettysburg to enjoy all the favorite getaway spots, but quiet enough to chill out afterward.
We initially chose this cottage because of its proximity to the boat ramp in Marysville, which made it an asset to our Paddle Sports business. Once we bought and rehabbed it, we realized we had a place that would appeal not only to paddlers and fishermen, but to the general public as well. Our location, close to Harrisburg, Hershey, Lancaster, Carlisle and Gettysburg, is prime for all visitors, while being affordable. We hope you agree!
Mary & Doug - the place is lovely! Comfortable and fully stocked It made for a great weekend away. Thank you!
We recently had a 5 week stay at this cottage and can honestly say that it was a great trip. The location is great with an amazing view of the river. Mary and Doug are such great hosts as well, not only answering any questions you have and assisting if needed, but they are just really good people. I enjoyed talking to Doug on a regular basis, as if we have been friends for years. We rented canoes from Doug and Mary, which they graciously let us keep for much longer, and had a great time going up and down the river. It's a beautiful river that isn't fast flowing, but is very shallow in places. As for the cottage, Mary and Doug had it well stocked and is great inside. We were a little unfortunate to stay in the hottest part of the summer prior to Mary and Doug installing central air conditioning, but everything else made the trip worth it. If we come back to this area next summer, this is the first place I'm going to try and reserve. Thanks again Mary and Doug for your hospitality and making us feel at home in your beautiful cottage. Wishing you guys the best!
Very enjoyable stay in a wonderful cottage. All the amenities are provided and it's very clean and convenient. We are repeat customers and plan on staying there again next year. The only reason I gave it 4 stars and not 5, is that no sports channels, not even ESPN is provided. We had to go out to watch the NHL playoffs, would be great to have a basic sports package available.
We enjoyed our stay here. We spend Thanksgivings with our older son and his family and needed family friendly accomodations. Our host met us at the property and showed us around and everything was as promised on web site. The property is conveniently located to Gettysburg and Hersheys; and the views are great. My only disappointment was that ESPN was not one of the cable choices. Missed some good college football games.
This cottage is beautifully kept and met all of our expectations. The owners were very friendly and accommodating as well. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a place along the river!
My family and I visited Hershey Park, Hershey Chocolate World, and took a buggy ride with Aaron and Jessica's Buggy Rides in Lancaster County. The River Cottage was just what we needed to get recharged during our stay. As explained to the Gibson's in an earlier e-mail, I am an avid Largemouth Bass fisherman, and have never fished for, therefore, caught a Smallmouth Bass. Catching a Smallmouth was on the bucket list. After our first day there, and resting up from a fun filled day at Hershey Park, my son and I went fishing behind the house toward the right of the launching area. Within an hour, I caught a 17", 3 1/2 lb Smallmouth!!! Talk about a vacation!!! Doug and Mary provided us with everything we needed, and then some with the house. When they mention the items they have provided for the house, they mean it. The house was well equipped with a lot of necessities to say the least. I am so thankful that I found this house to stay in during our visit. Taking a vacation, and doing what we had planned to do was great. But, when I can add my favorite activity such as fishing into the plan; I really hit the jackpot on picking this house!!! Thanks again Doug and Mary. You helped make our vacation better than expected!!!
We LOVED staying here!! The house was clean, beautifully renovated and maintained and fully stocked. Unlike other homes that I have rented, the owners Doug and Mary provided sheets and towels. Also all paper goods, cleaning products, shampoo and shower gel, and lots and lots of condiments, spices and other kitchen needs. All you need is food and some clothes. The property is right on the river and the owners own Blue Mountain Outfitters so we were able to rent kayaks which were delivered right to the house. The river is calm and shallow so no worries about the kids kayaking on their own. And just as the description promised we saw a couple of bald eagles right in the river!! I am already looking at my calendar to figure out when I can go back!!!
Located along the Susquehanna River, the cottage is perfect for canoeing, kayaking, fishing, and just plain relaxing! boat rental is available just up the road, and local fishing guides can help you find small mouth bass hiding places.
Antique hunters will enjoy checking out the various antique shops throughout Perry County, which can be done in conjunction with visiting the many covered bridges as well. And don't forget the wineries; Perry County has two of their own, and there are many others within a short distance of the cottage. (Hint, if the Ferry Boat is running, you can visit Hunters Valley Winery in Liverpool, then catch a ferry ride across the river to Millersburg, home to the Ned Smith Center for Nature and Art.)
Looking for exciting night life? Check out Harrisburg's Restaurant Row. Love chocolate? Hershey is only 20 minutes away! While there, check out the beautiful Hershey Gardens and Zoo. And speaking of zoos, the animals are up close and personal at Lake Tobias Wildlife Park, across the river in Halifax.
History buffs will want to check out Fort Hunter Mansion & Park, across the river from the Cottage, the National Civil War Museum, National Firefighters Museum, and of course the State Museum of Pennsylvania, all a short drive away in Harrisburg. And don't miss a trip to the U.S. Army Heritage & Education Center in Carlisle; it's fascinating, and free!
If you have kids along and encounter a rainy day, check out the Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts in downtown Harrisburg, which also includes a planetarium and theater, or take them to Indian Echo Caverns in Hummelstown; the weather's always the same underground! When the sun comes out again, check out City Island in Harrisburg, where they can play water golf, hit baseballs, and play in the playgrounds. If the time is right, you might catch a baseball game also.
Or visit Little Buffalo State Park in Newport, featuring hiking trails, a working grist mill, lake, and huge swimming pool; all at an affordable price.
Keep an eye on events at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex as well for things to do. Popular events include the Pennsylvania Farm Show in January, Great American Outdoor Show in February, Pennsylvania Home Builders Show in March, and many other events throughout the year.
Car buff? The Antique Automobile Club of America Museum in Hershey will blow you away! And we're not too far from Carlise Events; home to a multitude of car shows throughout the year.
If skiing's your thing, Roundtop Mountain Resort in Lewisberry offers skiing, snowboarding, and tubing in the winter, along with a summer program featuring OGO ball rides, zip lines, bumper boats, chairlift rides, and a canopy tour.
Whatever you choose to do, know that your cozy cottage is waiting, with a spot on the patio or deck to chill out and enjoy the view of the river!
