The high, majestic and imposing Etna has always been an attraction for those who love nature and the mountains. Generous as well as greedy, Etna decides on the destiny of the people who live on its slopes.
The “One Hundred Horses Chestnut-Tree”, at least 2000 years old, legendary testimony of the long history of Sicily, silent spectator of the events which took place under his huge
branches, is the symbol of the tenacity of the Sicilians and their love for the volcano.
With a circumference of 50 meters, this tree is among the oldest and biggest in the world.

Fabulous stay in Sant Alfio a wonderful village on the slopes of Etna. Wonderful garden with fantastic views to the summit of Etna and down to the sea. Fabrizio was a wonderful host throughout our stay, from the welcome pack of food and wine to the the help, friendliness and local knowledge throughout our stay. Highly recommended place to stay on the slopes of Etna. Thanks Fabrizio for everything!
Best wishes James and Jenny
These comments relate to the upstairs apartment, not the larger downstairs one which was booked at the time we were staying. Sant'Alfio is a lovely and quite traditional Sicilian village on the flanks of Mt Etna and was perfectly located for us, between Etna and the coast. The owner was exceptionally friendly and helpful, including recommending and booking restaurants for us, letting us use the laundry machine that was in another house owned by his family (his brother even drove us to the house!)and giving us a delicious cake baked by his Mum. Hospitality was great! The apartment itself (the upstairs one) was quite small but was fine for our needs (2 adults and 7-year old boy). Because it was high summer, we did struggle a little without air-conditioning, and the kitchen equipment was fairly basic. But as a slice of town life in eastern Sicily, and with very kind hosts, we would recommend this apartment to others. From what we could tell, the lower floor apartment appeared to be a bit more complete in its setup and probably had the better views towards the sea. We had a car and parking on the street outside the apartment was no problem.
"We had a lovely stay at Sant''Alfio thanks to the property''s very friendly and helpful owner. Fabrizio was always there ready to help (even carrying our luggages - THANK YOU ONCE AGAIN :) and made our stay truly enjoyable.
The views from the house are wonderful and the lovely garden with the Etna crater views impressive. Although we were a large group, the way the house is divided into 2 separate apartments was ideal for us, and the children got so quickly used to the place that they used to constantly ask when we could go "home" while we were out and about!
We really hope to be able to visit this lovely mountain village once again in the near future."
"Mr B.''s holiday home is nothing short of idyllic, set as it is in the Sicilian village of Sant''Alfio with the Mediterranean sea down the lower foothills of Etna and the superb volcano itself looking down on the property. The welcome we received was so warm and genuine...and we had reason to test the B. family''s standards of hospitality to the extreme. Firstly our rental car developed a problem which threatened to mess up our stay on the first full day...Etna was not smoking but our car sure was!! Mr B. took it upon himself to liaise with the car rental agency, picked up the car and took it to a mechanic in Sant''Alfio who, in the course of the evening and early morning, made sure that the problem only consisted of an over full water holding whatever...(under car bonnets is not my forte!) and pronounced it safe and road worthy. Thank goodness as the agency did not have a replacement for a 7 seater vehicle. To top this our 17 month old grandson developed a very high fever and once again our recourse was to the B. who kindly furnished us with the name and consulting hours of a local paediatrician. This they followed with phone calls during the day to see if little Nicholas was getting better and their concern continued for the rest of the stay. If these hiccups had to happen we could not have been in better hands or a nicer place and we will remain ever grateful to the B. family whom we hope to see in the future as we return to Sicily and explore this lovely island even further."
"Excellent base to explore Eastern Sicily. The house has a generous garden to enjoy the good weather and absolutely everything you could think about for a comfortable stay. It is an older traditional house with a more recent extension. That means lots of light in the kitchen/ living room and guaranteed cool in the bedroom after a hot Sicilian day. The view on the valley and the sea in the distance is amazing both by day and by night and your calm and privacy are guaranteed. The owner is always available and willing to help/ give advice if you need / want any. Highly recommended!"
"The accommodation is situated in a nice village, not far from the main places of interest on the eastern part of Sicily. The top point of the accommodation is a lovely big private garden which allows some beautiful volcano views.Friendly cats use to come around and they add a lot to a charm of the place. Very quiet and peaceful. The owner seems to be a busy person, but he did his best to fix a stove problem we had.
In a sum, this is very relaxing place to stay and it is very convenient for Etna trips".
