We moved here from New York City after having our first child. We wanted a place in the country that would be nurturing and healing for our growing family. It's definitely done that for us and we are delighted to share our home with others while we seek new adventures!
Kirsten Malloy purchased this chalet in 2005
The knotty pine cathedral ceilings make this home feel so spacious and roomy. The energy here feels inviting, warm, friendly so peaceful! After experiencing the inside of the house we ventured outside to the lake and could hardly believe we could actually own a little piece of heaven like this. Swimming in the lake each morning invigorates and refreshes each and every one of our spirits daily!
Having a lake in the back yard is such a blessing. The added amenities like the 15ft trampoline, tree house, swing set, sand boxes, slides and swings and boats truly make this property a children's paradise! Also the endless trails through the woods and the road that encircles the lake is so ideal for taking a leisurely stroll or bike ride.
My friends and I spent one night at Kirsten Cabin´s in the Catskills and if I had to use 2 words to describe our experience, I would most definitely choose "Perfect" and "Magical". Every single detail about the cabin, its location and the spirit of the place is absolutely breathtaking.
I was very surprised that some bad reviews had almost prevented me from renting this incredible place from such a wonderful person. So in order to do justice to Kirsten and to her beautiful cabin I will try to cover all the important topics in order to hopefully aid other travelers to jump in and take the decision to have the beautiful experience we all had.
Host: Kirsten was absolutely nice, helpful and flexible. She replied to my messages very promptly, was always very eager to help and extremely friendly and reliable. I booked the cabin one day before and I was very surprised and thankful for the kind service she provided.
Cleanliness: The cabin was perfectly organized and clean when we got there. There were towels and even soap in the bathroom. The sheets were also fresh. Disclaimer: This is not a 5 star hotel and me and my friends were glad it wasnt. This is an actual home and that is what makes the experience all the better.
Decor and Atmosphere: This part is essential. The pictures posted, as beautiful as they are, come short to the grace and soul of this wonderful wooden house which is filled with all kinds of lighting, LP´s, Old style lamps and vintage items like the beautiful organ in the living room. The house is also equipped with games, various musical instruments, movies and entertainment.
Location and surroundings: With a mesmerizing lake right in front of the cabin and a majestic landscape of small houses around it, the location of this property does not get better. And as if all of that wasn´t enough, there is a trampoline, beautiful warm string lights hanging from a tree, a swing and the two most poetic benches I have seen.
Other: The cabin is equipped with plenty kitchen supplies and utensils that make it very easy to prepare a home-made meal. There was also warm water in the shower which worked just fine and the temperature in the cabin was always cozy. (you can turn on the chimney if you wish) Wifi as well.
Overall I´d recommend Kirsten´s cabin 100%. If you are looking for a magical place to rest, to breathe in some nature and to feel absolutely cozy and inspired, there is no need to look further. PS: Martin, my dog loved it!
We loved staying at this cabin! I read some of the revues regarding the condition and such but I've learned that you just have to see things for yourself before you make a determination. This cabin is rustic for sure and filled with items from the owners life and work. It does seem like a lot of things here and there but it gives you something to do when you walk around at night listening to the silence. There are really no issues with the property though it is older and definitely well lived in. There are many sleeping rooms to choose from if you are a small group or couple and plenty of room if you're a large family or group. The address shows the property as being across the road from the lake but it is actually right next to the lake. Here are some things we LOVED: 1- There is a record player and a huge collection of records to play from all over the world in many styles, Disco to Swedish dance music and everything in between. So fun to make a fire in the pot belly stove while listening to records. No kidding! 2- Fire pit next to the lake!! Kicking up a bonfire next to a foggy lake on a snowy night is a priceless thing! 3- Privacy! The cabin is located in a private lake community of about six or seven houses spread far apart surrounding the small mountain lake about the size of a high school football field. 3- Peace and quiet! We live in Brooklyn. It's really noisy in Brooklyn but It is seeeeeriously quiet at this cabin. 4- Nearby quaint towns. We bought some excellent rare books in Hobart, we ate a fabulous lunch in Delhi and we roamed the trails all over the mountain nearby and near the river. Beautiful. If you want skiing and snowmobiling there are tons of that stuff nearby as well. We went there in the dead of winter so we couldn't go swimming but we are going to book a return trip for the summer. There was really nothing to hate or dislike about this cabin. The only thing I will say is that it is rustic and whimsical, like the title of my review says. If you are looking for a 5 star resort this is not it. If you are looking for a real and true well lived in Catskills Mountain Cabin THIS IS IT! A word about me: I'm a set designer and prop designer from NYC. I've built Broadway sets for award winning shows that look just like this place! It reminds me of Mousetrap, Something Rotten, Fiddler on the Roof and a little bit of Lord of the Rings all rolled into one. That's all I can say. We had a blast and we are going back.
We stayed at this charming cottage in a lovely setting for a brief weekend.
The photos misrepresent the current state of the place, which is cluttered with owners possessions. Comments in earlier 2016 reviews are accurate, remain problematic. While clean, house is musty, needs floor fans & screens. Owner is attentive/ responsive via email but needs to attend to property.
Our family really enjoyed spending time at this cozy cabin. The owner was easy to work with and answered, same day, any questions. The drive to this cabin was filled with beautiful scenic mountains. Even with our first few days rained in, there were plenty of books, board games, toys, movies and music to entertain. On the sunny days, most mornings were spent kayaking, canoeing and fishing on the water. In the afternoons time was set aside for reading in the hammock or playing in the treehouse. The solar lights illuminating the path to the water at night were beautiful. They enabled us to carry our s'more stuff to the fire pit without worrying about a flashlight. The kitchen was full of beautiful pottery and glassware that made setting the family-style table for mealtime easy. There was plenty of seating in the living area and privacy with three bedrooms. The owner provided bedding & linen so packing for this trip was easy, all we needed to bring was clothing, toiletries and food! When we did venture out, the tiny town of Hobart surprised! There were several book stores, a cafe and restaurant. Overall, our trip was everything we wanted, relaxing, restful and remote.
We just got back from a 5 day stay at this pretty cabin. The house was very roomy and had lots to offer as far as family entertainment is concerned with puzzles and games and toys and dolls for my 5-year-old. However, it was raining on our first day there and we tried to use the DirectTV that was listed in the amenities section and only 10-15 channels were available to us. None of them being kids channels. We looked up the error code that was listed on the TV and it stated that the bill was overdue. We didn't think too much of it though, since there were lots of DVDs to pick from. However, most of them were empty cases and we had to run out and pick up a few movies to watch since we didn't bring any with us since they were one of the things mentioned that came with the house. Then the first morning we woke up we absolutely could not locate a toaster which also was listed in the amenities. We were happy with a lot of the things to do outside. There was a comfortable swing for the 4 of us to sit on, a fun swingset for my little daughter, a cool treehouse for my older daughter, and 2 little sandboxes full of toys to play with. That was all great. However, there were no bunnies in the fenced area where they should've been and the trampoline had a huge hole on the one side that was just covered by big tires that would bounce around as my daughter jumped which would uncover the hole. Very unsafe. We loved lounging by the lake area and it was very private and had lots of comfortable seating. We loved going out on the kayaks and the canoe, as well. Unfortunately, there was only one life jacket available to use so it wasn't safe for us all to go out as a family and we didn't bring any because they were supposed to come with the house. I messaged the owners of the house about the DirectTV, the toaster, and the bunnies on the first day that we were there and never heard back from them until the last day that we were there when the owner called me and left a message asking if I would take the garbage out to the curb if they could arrange for a garbage pick up. She never mentioned my concerns that I brought up in the message and never did call back to tell me to take the garbage out or not. Overall, we did love the layout of the house and how beautiful it was outside, but because of the lack of communication about the issues we were having and the fact that there were some safety problems (life jackets and trampoline) we won't be back again.
My family and I just returned from a weekend at this cottage. I had great expectations for this cottage based on the previous renters’ reviews; I was very disappointed. While the cottage is on a beautiful lake with amazing views, I felt like the cottage (inside and out) are in need of a deep-clean and de-clutter. The window screens on the inside were full of cobwebs and old bugs. There were also cobwebs and filth behind and under the furniture. Both the inside and outside had piles of stuff that were covered with blankets and tarps (outside). Parts of the sides of the outside deck are in disrepair and covered with tarps. I think this cottage would be much more attractive and comfortable for guests if there were not so many items around and if there was more overall organization and care. The pictures in the listing do not show the many items around the house (both on walls and shelves). The area with the kid activities (swing set, trampoline, sand box) were in an overgrown area next to the house. Again, I feel like if it was better cared for it would be a better space. Also, a screen for the sliding glass door would be nice. The lake views were incredible and the fire pit was nice to have.
