About Kirsten Malloy

We moved here from New York City after having our first child. We wanted a place in the country that would be nurturing and healing for our growing family. It's definitely done that for us and we are delighted to share our home with others while we seek new adventures!

Kirsten Malloy purchased this chalet in 2005

Why Kirsten Malloy chose Kortright

The knotty pine cathedral ceilings make this home feel so spacious and roomy. The energy here feels inviting, warm, friendly so peaceful! After experiencing the inside of the house we ventured outside to the lake and could hardly believe we could actually own a little piece of heaven like this. Swimming in the lake each morning invigorates and refreshes each and every one of our spirits daily!

What makes this chalet unique

Having a lake in the back yard is such a blessing. The added amenities like the 15ft trampoline, tree house, swing set, sand boxes, slides and swings and boats truly make this property a children's paradise! Also the endless trails through the woods and the road that encircles the lake is so ideal for taking a leisurely stroll or bike ride.

Charming but needs attention

  • 2 of 5

We stayed at this charming cottage in a lovely setting for a brief weekend.

The photos misrepresent the current state of the place, which is cluttered with owners possessions. Comments in earlier 2016 reviews are accurate, remain problematic. While clean, house is musty, needs floor fans & screens. Owner is attentive/ responsive via email but needs to attend to property.

Great quiet getaway!

  • 5 of 5

Our family really enjoyed spending time at this cozy cabin. The owner was easy to work with and answered, same day, any questions. The drive to this cabin was filled with beautiful scenic mountains. Even with our first few days rained in, there were plenty of books, board games, toys, movies and music to entertain. On the sunny days, most mornings were spent kayaking, canoeing and fishing on the water. In the afternoons time was set aside for reading in the hammock or playing in the treehouse. The solar lights illuminating the path to the water at night were beautiful. They enabled us to carry our s'more stuff to the fire pit without worrying about a flashlight. The kitchen was full of beautiful pottery and glassware that made setting the family-style table for mealtime easy. There was plenty of seating in the living area and privacy with three bedrooms. The owner provided bedding & linen so packing for this trip was easy, all we needed to bring was clothing, toiletries and food! When we did venture out, the tiny town of Hobart surprised! There were several book stores, a cafe and restaurant. Overall, our trip was everything we wanted, relaxing, restful and remote.

Beautiful House. But, was a little in disrepair and didn't have all the amenities that were listed.

  • 3 of 5

We just got back from a 5 day stay at this pretty cabin. The house was very roomy and had lots to offer as far as family entertainment is concerned with puzzles and games and toys and dolls for my 5-year-old. However, it was raining on our first day there and we tried to use the DirectTV that was listed in the amenities section and only 10-15 channels were available to us. None of them being kids channels. We looked up the error code that was listed on the TV and it stated that the bill was overdue. We didn't think too much of it though, since there were lots of DVDs to pick from. However, most of them were empty cases and we had to run out and pick up a few movies to watch since we didn't bring any with us since they were one of the things mentioned that came with the house. Then the first morning we woke up we absolutely could not locate a toaster which also was listed in the amenities. We were happy with a lot of the things to do outside. There was a comfortable swing for the 4 of us to sit on, a fun swingset for my little daughter, a cool treehouse for my older daughter, and 2 little sandboxes full of toys to play with. That was all great. However, there were no bunnies in the fenced area where they should've been and the trampoline had a huge hole on the one side that was just covered by big tires that would bounce around as my daughter jumped which would uncover the hole. Very unsafe. We loved lounging by the lake area and it was very private and had lots of comfortable seating. We loved going out on the kayaks and the canoe, as well. Unfortunately, there was only one life jacket available to use so it wasn't safe for us all to go out as a family and we didn't bring any because they were supposed to come with the house. I messaged the owners of the house about the DirectTV, the toaster, and the bunnies on the first day that we were there and never heard back from them until the last day that we were there when the owner called me and left a message asking if I would take the garbage out to the curb if they could arrange for a garbage pick up. She never mentioned my concerns that I brought up in the message and never did call back to tell me to take the garbage out or not. Overall, we did love the layout of the house and how beautiful it was outside, but because of the lack of communication about the issues we were having and the fact that there were some safety problems (life jackets and trampoline) we won't be back again.

My family and I just returned from a weekend at this cottage. I had great expectations for this cottage based on the previous renters’ reviews; I was very disappointed. While the cottage is on a beautiful lake with amazing views, I felt like the cottage (inside and out) are in need of a deep-clean and de-clutter. The window screens on the inside were full of cobwebs and old bugs. There were also cobwebs and filth behind and under the furniture. Both the inside and outside had piles of stuff that were covered with blankets and tarps (outside). Parts of the sides of the outside deck are in disrepair and covered with tarps. I think this cottage would be much more attractive and comfortable for guests if there were not so many items around and if there was more overall organization and care. The pictures in the listing do not show the many items around the house (both on walls and shelves). The area with the kid activities (swing set, trampoline, sand box) were in an overgrown area next to the house. Again, I feel like if it was better cared for it would be a better space. Also, a screen for the sliding glass door would be nice. The lake views were incredible and the fire pit was nice to have.

Dirty and smelly

  • 1 of 5

We were very disappointed with the house. We stayed positive for the benefit of our child who has been waiting the birthday trip for a while. First of all the cottage is advertised as a rental property which would imply that it’s meant to be enjoyed by the guests that stay there however this is clearly a place where the owner resides and is filled to the brims with the owner’s family’s personal belongings. There was not a single closet or a dresser where we could unpack. One of the bedrooms holds the washer and is filled with blankets and junk surrounding the washer which could easily be a fire hazard. The door on that washer comes off the hinges and can fall on a child. There were no smoke detectors in case of a fire. There were additional boxes and countless items on every shelf and all over the bedroom floors which made it a struggle to even fit our bags. All the beds smelled bad and the pillows were stained and soiled and smelled awful. Needless to say we didn’t get much sleep. The windows had cobwebs and fly droppings caked on the screens which was especially gross in the kitchen and made it impossible to enjoy a meal. While it was clear that the cleaning lady came and did her best it would be impossible to truly clean it without first getting rid of all of the junk. The rugs were dirty, stained and smelly. The couches covered in dirty and smelly blankets and dirty throw pillows. The bathroom walls were covered in splashed toothpaste. The loft, aside from the bed had piles of boxes and junk covered in smelly blankets. The kitchen cupboards had mouse droppings, dust and greasy stuff. We woke up to our food being eaten by mice that left behind more droppings. The fridge had an awful smell to it even after I cleaned it again. The garbage bins were filled and no more trash could fit. In fact the whole area under the dock/house resembles a landfill with countless trash bags. The trampoline has no safety netting and was torn on one edge which can cause a serious injury. The rental is not as advertised. I work hard it is very upsetting when a family vacation is ruined by false advertising. I reached out to the owner for at least a partial refund and was informed that she was in a difficult financial situation and it was unclear when she could pay me back, she offered her husband’s art as a payment however I insisted on a monetary refund and she stopped responding so I filed a claim withat my credit card.

Something for everyone!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for a long weekend and just relaxed. The owners were welcoming, accommodating and genuine. It was a pleasure working with Kirsten. The property is beautiful with plenty to do...trampoline, swing set, kayak, paddle boat, swimming...it was amazing. We would go back for sure! The kids (ages 9 months to 7 years old) had a blast and so did my husband and I. Traveling with 4 little ones isn't always easy, but the layout of this home and property made our weekend away completely enjoyable and our mini-vacation full of fond memories!
