This private single-level home provides the Aloha spirit in the beautiful and flourishing tropical landscape within the Lanai Villas section of Poipu Kai Resort. Walk a few minutes on the secluded greenbelt path to catch the morning sunrise over Shipwreck Beach, and then end the day by strolling on the same path to see the sunset over Poipu Beach....

Mele Hale (Home of Song) is beautifully and uniquely decorated with style, comfort and relaxation in mind. It is spacious enough to enjoy a gathering of friends and family (up to 7 people), yet cozy and private enough for a couple who are looking for a luxurious and quiet vacation retreat. Enjoy the tropical breeze flowing throughout the house. Vaulted ceilings and numerous windows, create a fresh, airy vacation residence that invites indoor-outdoor living. For those warmer days, our home has guest controlled air conditioning in all bedrooms as well as the living, dining, and kitchen areas. The twin beds can be converted to a king, allowing accommodation for three couples.

After exploring the many Kauai farmer’s markets, enjoy cooking for your loved ones in the fully equipped and well stocked kitchen. Or take it outdoors and cook in your own private, tropical backyard; equipped with a large gas grill and outdoor seating for 8. The backyard is truly an oasis. Kick back in the chaise lounge chairs at night, and thanks to the near absence of city lights, marvel at the glorious, Hawaiian night skies.

What really makes this home special is stepping out of your backyard and having access to the Poipu Kai green belt.

- You can stroll east to the Grand Hyatt, Anara Spa, Shipwreck Beach and the Maha'ulepa Heratige Trail. A perfect area to stroll and hike. It also offers world class surfing.

- Walking west brings you to the Poipu Kai resort pool, hot tub, and tennis courts (tennis courts available for a nominal fee).

- Brennecke’s Beach, and Poipu Beach Park, are another 5 minute walk past the pool. (If you don’t feel like walking, load up the car with all of our beach toys, chairs and towels; there is ample free parking next to these beaches). Poipu Beach Park offers some of the safest swimming in Hawaii with a life guard on duty seven days a week. Brennecke’s Beach is known for it’s easy to catch body boarding and body surfing waves. It is a favorite for locals and visitors alike. There is a protected area for swimmers and snorkeling with surf breaks off shore for the experienced surfer.

About Janelle Owens

The home is owned by husband and wife, Chris and Janelle, who live primarily in the State of Washington. We have visited Hawaii many times with our kids and relatives and decided in 2014 to also become part-time residents (and maybe full-time someday). We are very active and outdoors oriented, and have had many adventures in Kauai and the other islands with our kids. We are very tuned in to how to be active and get the most out of Kauai, but also how to find the personal and meditative side of Kauai. Our goal is for all of our guests to create lifelong memories during their stay at our home, and have a very smooth and problem-free stay.

Why Janelle Owens chose Poipu

Our very first visit to Hawaii was to Kauai and the Poipu Kai area back in 1992. We walked our 1-year old son in his stroller along the Poipu Kai public walkway to go back and forth to the beach, and fell in love with Kauai on that trip. Now that the kids grown up, we couldn't help but return to our Kauai beginnings and acquire our home, which we had strolled past countless times during the our prior visits.

What makes this house unique

The quiet and seclusion of a private home in a single family neighborhood, but with the amenities of the Poipu Kai Resort (pools, tennis), and just a few steps from two beautiful beaches. Oh, and of course, we should mention that Poipu is sunny and dry, so it's the place to go for a weather bulletproof vacation year-round.

Notes:
We aim to meet the needs of families with children and reduce what you need to lug to the airport. For babies/toddlers, we provide a high chair, stroller, car seat, port-a-crib, baby pool, sippy cups, baby utensils and bowls. The home is only one level and the grass backyard is fully enclosed. For kids, we provide sand toys and boogie boards and plenty of geckoes around the yard. And we've got a surf board for the teenagers or young at heart adults.

Wonderful Mele Hale

Stayed Dec 14-23 (nowhere near long enough) with three couples. We have been longtime visitors to Poipu area, always staying previously at the Kiahuna Plantation nearby. With three adult couples, three units at Kiahuna was expensive, so I started looking for options. Came across Mele Hale on VBRO, and am very happy with the entire experience. Everything about the location, home and property was as advertised. The home had everything that vacationers could want, from a fully equipped kitchen, beach towels and equipment, games, books, you name it. Brenekes and Poipu beaches were very walkable, though we occasionally drove take the beach chairs (also supplied by the house) with us. Kalipaki Joe's Sports Bar was a short walk away to watch the Seahawks on TV with other fans.

Because of this home and layout, we were able to enjoy a family style dinner prepared by my current and future sons in law, and enjoy each other's company in the comfort of the beautiful great room. With the bedroom wing separated from the living wing, it was easy for couples with different sleep schedules to coexist without disturbing each other. Perfect.

I could tell the home was well-cared for by the neatness of the maintenance shelves in the garage. The grounds were immaculate, as was the entire neighborhood of homes in the Poipu Kai Development. The only two minor things I would mention to management/maintenance was one of the portable fans in the bedroom was inoperable, and the front door needed to be rehung or adjusted, as it was difficult to close... minor little things in the big scheme of things. I am sure they will be taken care of in due course.

We look forward to our next visit to Kauai, and Mele Hale.

In short, we have found a new favorite location when we are traveling with at least one other couple. While we still love the closeness of the beach and grounds at Kiahuna, it is hard to beat Mele Hale for the combination of price, location, and accomodations.

Can’t wait to go back!

It’s been nearly a year since we stayed at this property and we cannot wait to go back. We were here with four adults and two young children and it was perfect - walking distance to two beaches, close proximity to coffee, food and shopping, and the house was very well-equipped with everything we needed for us and the kids. I can’t say enough good things about this place.

Awesome rental and will stay here again

We were 2 couples with 1 toddler each staying in this lovely home.

It is a great size home and really spacious.

Kitchen - well stocked with lots of everything - was great not having to have to do dishes after each meal to have plates for next meal. There is several plastic plates and cups which were great for the kids. Also several containers that could be used for left overs. Maybe needs a few plastic ones to take to the beach.

House is well looked after, yes the bathrooms are dated but everything works. The tub in the master is a bit of safety issue with toddlers but we just placed a suitcase in front of the shower area to keep them out.

The beds were really comfy and I nearly took one of the pillows home with me :) The only problem is the quilt on master bed keeps falling off.

The fact that the bedrooms are separate from the living room makes the house quiet and easy when kids are on different time schedules. Even bedrooms seemed pretty sound proofed.

The beach gear (chairs,umbrellas, tent) , toys and baby splash pool was great to have (and not needing to rent them) and the kids played for hours in the splash pool.

The AC was great although we only used it the first few days as rest of the time it was cooler and could just leave the sliding doors/windows open for cool air.

The walk to both beaches - Shipwreck and Poipu is very pretty and an easy walk and really not far. Only problem is carrying everything there and back with 2 toddlers - this can easily be fixed with one of those beach wagons.

Chris and Janelle were really helpful and very responsive to emails and questions!

Overall it is a great rental and will very likely stay here again in the future.

great location - needs some updating

We just stayed at Mele Hale Jan 20-Feb 5. The location was perfect - backing the greenbelt offered beautiful walks in both directions. Rent a wagon if you are planning to walk to the beach with your beach gear (which the house has a great selection of). Yard was maintained well and very private. Layout was perfect with 6 adults and 1 child staying there as the bedrooms were very separated from the living space so early risers or night owls didn't wake anybody up.

AC worked perfectly and we couldn't imagine how hot it would have been in there without it.

Could use a good cleaning (dust and cobwebs on walls and fans and lights) but as far as a rental goes, I've seen worse.

Blender in kitchen needs to be thrown out! does not seal on the top or the bottom.

Cupboards in kitchen and bathrooms are very worn.

Fridge and dishwasher are very worn.

Fridge in Garage does not get very cold. When we contacted the property manager, they asked us to unplug the fridge for a few days and then see if it works. We didn't do it because we couldn't be bothered while on vacation, but the fridge would have been nice for drinks etc.

New property management company took over a couple weeks before our stay and perhaps need a few kinks worked out - both propane tanks for the grill were empty and took 2 days to come fill from time we called. Half of the lightbulbs in the house were burned out and all of the batteries in remotes and safe were dead.

Neighbouring patio light shines directly into queen size bedroom. We put towels in the windows to block the light.

Property information binder in home should be updated with current wifi password and perhaps a map or instruction on how to get to the pool.

Instruction to have garbage out for pick up by 9 am should be changed to 7 am as it was always picked up right around then.

Shared use pool is WELL overdue for updating. More tiles missing in hot tub and pool than there are remaining, with mold growing in those areas. Breaker for jets in hot tub were blown 90% of the time. Umbrellas on pool deck should be replaced as they are very difficult to put up and have holes in them. Bathrooms at pool are gross.

Overall, we would stay here again because of the layout, location, and yard.

I am so pleased to know that the layout of our home was perfect for your needs and that you enjoyed our yard. We added A/C last October and we are very pleased that it added to the overall comfort of your stay. Other aspects of your review, however, are inaccurate. The kitchen refrigerator, while not new, functions perfectly. The dishwasher is only 8 months old. The refrigerator in the garage has a thermostat, which adjusts very easily to the temperature that is preferred. While the Poipu Kai pool is scheduled for a facelift later in 2018, it is still a pleasant place for families to relax and cool off. Our housekeepers do an impeccable job of cleaning and we have not had a complaint of this nature in the past. Providing excellent hospitality is our number one goal however, so I will use this as a teachable moment and I will point out to our housekeeping staff that you noticed dust on the walls and lights. You requested a propane tank late on a Saturday night. Our maintenance staff will assist with all emergency needs on a Sunday for no additional fee. They will respond for non-emergency needs on a Sunday for an additional fee; (we would have paid this). Your propane was delivered on Monday, however. We will again use this as a teachable moment and have our staff double check the propane before a guest arrives. I will ask our neighbors to kindly turn off the back patio light at night; I am sorry that it was left on and that it posed an issue for you. Mahalo, Janelle

nice home with wonderful play equipment for our baby

This home was perfect for us, our children and grand baby.

We enjoyed cooking in the fully equipt kitchen and there was a comfortable bedroom for each of us. It is located halfway between a sunset beach and a sunrise beach which we walked to daily. The home is nice and quiet with a small fenced yard.

Great Location, Perfect house

We had 4 adults and one 13 year old stay here over Christmas Holiday 2017 (11 nights). It was perfect! The location was great, if you go to the left about a 7 min walk, that beach is PERFECT for my 13 year old, she spent hours boogie board there. We also use the tennis courts almost daily which was a 5 min walk from the house. The beach chairs and umbrellas where so great to have and loved the beach chairs being back packs, so you just strap them on an your off. The backyard patio was also large and very nice. We used the grill a number of time for dinner and sat outside. The house had everything we needed from kitchen things to board games. We didn't want to leave!!!

MINIMUM STAY: We require a minimum stay of 7 nights. However, we allow shorter stays under the following circumstances: 5 nights within a 7-night open block, 4 nights within a 6-night open blocks, 3 nights within a 5-night open block, and 2 nights within a 4-night open block. By open block, we mean the block of open nights between two existing reservations.
PAYMENT: All properties will require full payment 60-days prior to arrival. Payment must be made by credit card only, using HomeAway (VRBO) payment processing system. By using credit card payments solely, guests are offered improved security for their expenses and a well-defined conflict resolution process. It also allows immediate confirmation of bookings, which provides guests with assurance that their desired rental dates are secured.
OCCUPANCY: Occupancy is limited to a maximum of 7 guests, unless expressly approved by the owners. Receptions, luau’s, and parties of any kind are strictly prohibited.
OUTCLEANING CHARGES: We charge $300 to cover the costs of cleaning the home after guest departure and cover provision to guests of household consumables, such as dishwashing/dishwasher detergent, toilet paper, paper towels. When guests depart, a professional cleaning service comes to wash the balance of linens and towels and prepare for the next visitors. We expect the rental unit to be left in a “neat” condition.
