Overview

About the property

Two Bedroom, one bath, kitchen, laundry, screen porch, mudroom.

Hannon House is on the river, under the sky where fishing and outdoor fun come naturally. Hannon House is a 116 year old farm house in the style of old rural Montana. The life style and prices reflect the character and unique location of this rare piece of history. If you are looking for a taste of old Montana this is it.

A two bedroom cabin is located adjacent to the original farmhouse at the historic Hannon homestead on the Bitterroot River three miles south of Darby Montana. Settled in the late 1880’s the farm house and grounds sit on the western edge of the Bitterroot River with over 1700 feet of river frontage. Structures on the property date from the 1880's to 1974 including hand hewn log and milled lumber barns and out buildings. The main house was titled in 1900. This is the site of the areas original mercantile and post office. Bordered by the Bitterroot and Sapphire mountains and situated on the Lewis and Clark trail (Really, they walked through the front yard) the house sits in the shadow of Trapper Peak, the highest peak in the Bitterroot Range. The site is located at the confluence of the East fork, West fork and Main branch of the Bitterroot River. This is a taste of old Montana steps from one of the finest native trout streams in the west. This is a working farm including irrigated hay production and garden crops. Property restoration is ongoing and currently in progress. Cabin accommodations are clean and simple with an emphasis on flyfishing, watersports, hiking, hunting, skiing, open space and relaxation. The site is hosted with the property owner residing on the premises. You are free to explore the grounds, fish the river, participate in activities or find the peace that solitude provides. We are 27 miles from Lost Trails Powder Mountain ski resort. Restaurants and shopping are located within 3 miles in the town of Darby.

About Steve Lilburn

Born and raised in the western states I have traveled its beaches, mountains and deserts looking for special places and unique environments. Now semi-retired I enjoy sharing this special place with visitors new and old while restoring this property to its original character.

Steve Lilburn purchased this cabin in 2003

Why Steve Lilburn chose Darby

Known for its flyfishing history and historic ruggedness this area attracts visitors from around the world looking for a taste of the old west and a chance to catch a native born westslope cutthroat, rainbow, brown, brook and bull trout. I bought this property to preserve its uniqueness and share its character with others.

What makes this cabin unique

1700 feet of river front, boat launch, casting pond, at the confluence of the east fork, west fork and main branch of the Bitterroot River. Twenty seven miles from some of the greatest powder skying in southwest Montana, Lost Trails Powder Mountain. Close enough to all that's important, just far enough away from all that's not.

I'm hooked

  • 5 of 5

Not only was the cabin comfy, Steve told me what the secret fly of the day was...and then, several days later, as I was leaving reluctantly, sent me off with a thermos of fresh brewed coffee (strong enough for your spoon to stand up in) and some of Kim home-made oatmeal cookies. Thanks to Steve and Kim for being supporters of CASTING for RECOVERY and CAST ONE FOR HOPE. See you next year, if not sooner.

CLASS act

  • 5 of 5

How can a cabin stay on a river...be "classy?" Ask landlord Steve who always seems to go a step above. This was our 2nd summer staying at Cutthroat Cabin on the Bitterroot River for a week. I wrote a review last year & am glad to note that the quality here is still TOP notch. We stay at VRBO's all over the country & know what's "standard," what's above & below. This place covers every base & then some.

Here are a few of the many perks of staying. We love picking BIG bowls of raspberries in the a.m. & Steve encourages his guests to do so. He provides life jackets if you want to float the river, so no need to rent. His Keurig coffee basket is stocked as is a "treat" basket that he places out for you with gourmet snacks to greet you upon arrival. The pantry has all the essentials for cooking, oils, condiments, etc. Plenty of games & a stocked library in the main house to which the guests have full access.

Once again, we fished in the premier Bitterroot River on his private fishing access allowing us to catch our limit and have delicious fish for dinner. One night we bought Montana steak (best steak in the U.S in our opinion) cooked on the grill on our deck. The table for two is romantic and we felt like we were at a resort. In the evening we like to retire to the cozy living room & watch a movie and then sit on the back porch to watch the sun set behind Trapper Peak. The Swiss Alps have nothing on this bit of heaven.

There are people down the river spending $1000+ per night for a cabin stay while Steve keeps his prices CRAZY low. The beds are comfy with white duvets, the shower is awesome and the grounds are kept groomed and immaculate. I can't say enough about this "best kept secret" getaway & can't wait for our week there next year. If you book .. tell 'em Laurie & H sent ya!

A jewel in bitterroot valley

  • 5 of 5

A wonderful place to stay and enjoy what Montana has to offer. Very comfortable and fully equipped home and wonderful hosts. Take advantage of having a glass of wine in front of the campfire and don't forget to check out the stars in the night sky. Highly recommend. Will stay again.
